` The principal oblectsof my invention pertain to the provision ofa rollfora beater orthe like which is characterized by a novel vconstruction and arrangement wherein a unitary body has end andintermediate circumferential rings with which longitudinally extending spaced bars are associated, and all of which is `in combination, with a. means for maintaining thebody, rings and bars in their assembled relation.
The novel construction makes it possible to r provide a` roll having the desiredweight and at l5 the same time to provide the desired strength in bar securing means without the necessity of incorporating a stronger and more expensive material in the body. Thereby thereis economically produced a roll ofthe desired low cost and weight with `strong and eilicient bar associating means. y 1
Various novelobjects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter more fully referred to in connection with the accompanying description of the present preferred form of the invention, with reference to the drawing, wherein:

Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Referring now to the drawing more in detail, wherein similar reference figures refer to like parts, and referring more particularly to the preferred form of my invention which has been selected for illustrative purposes, I`have` shown a roll body which is represented at 2 and which has heads at opposite ends as shown, which are bored at 4 and 6 so as to receive a shaft. The body 2 may be of such material as cast iron.' which is not as expensive asotherstronger met.- als, in order t'o obtain the desired weight of the roll. 'I'hat is, the body may bernade to answer 45 weight requirements without particular .regard to the strength requirements of the bar construction since the bars and means for securing themd to the body may be designed and made from such material as provides the necessary strength, the 5o ease of assembly and eiilciency, etc.
Circumferential end rings I rare provided which may be secured to the body 2 in any well known manner as by being shrunk or pressed thereonto. These ringsare preferably of steel so as to have strength, wearability and other desired qualities and they are provided with spaced slotsv for receiving circumferentially spaced longitudinally extending cutter bars Il.
'I'he said bars lll`have outer working faces which are adapted to comperato with the bars of a bed plate of a beater when the roll is rotated relative thereto.
`'Ihe outer periphery of the roll is turned so as to receive the rings 8 and to provide seats for the inner 'edges of the cutter bars Ill.
Circumferential grooves nare provided in the body `and receive intermediate rings 22 which encircle thebody. The rings 22 arepreferably of steel and are split or sectionalized to provide sections or naif-pms to facilitate assemmy; `Aeslotted to receive the ends of the ring sections as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The adjacent ends of Vthe ring sections are welded together as indicated at 28 in Fig. 3 and to the screws as indicated at 28. Thus the 'ends of the ring parts of rings `22 are secured together and to the screws 24, which provides integral rings while the screws are held against turning.
Rings 22 have slots in alignment with those of end rings 8. The longitudinal bars I0 extend through the`slots of rings 22 and 8 and are l 4each ring, and `between each `pair of adjacent bars III, means is provided for` holding the bars in place against shifting. Such means is preferably constructed not only to facili-tate ready `and easy assembling of the parts but to make possible the easy and ready removal and replacement of bars when desired.
Lugs 31|v extend into openings provided in `adjacent bars of a pair which lugs between the bars have openings for receiving cap screws 32 that lthreadedly engage -bushings 3l in screw threaded engagement with the body, as shown in Fig. 2.
Preferably the bushingsv 34 are employed and they are of non-corrosive metal threadedly engaging the body and threadedly receive the cap screws 32. By being of non-corrosive metal the cap screws may be readily unscrewed from the bushings as desired, Locking means may be prov ided for preventing the cap screws from backing out of the bushings.
l By means of the cap screws and lugs the bars may be brought nrmly against the machinedv or finished peripheral parts of the body and securely held in place against longitudinal shifting.
Fillers 40 of Wood or some desired material are provided between the bars to provide support for the bars and prevent pulp from filling the spaces between the said bars. These fillers are notched on their inner sides -to clear the cap screws 32 and rings 22.
Plates or head covers 5 and l are provided to overlie the end heads of thegroll and to overlie the jointure of the end rings and head and inner portions of the ends of the bars. These are secured to the ends of the body in any desired manner.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the construction facilitates the provision of a body of the desired weight without the necessity of using such more expensive material as is required for strength while at the same time the construction for positioning and holding the bars is designed with particular reference to accuracy and strength.
As has been described the end rings 8 and intermediate rings 22 are provided with4 slots for receiving the bars I0 which slots according to one feature of the invention may be arranged so that the bars are angularly disposed relative to planes passing through the longitudinal axis of the roll or are arranged spirally or` helically This is desirable in a roll for a beater for many reasons among which are that the bars do not engage the coacting parts of the bed plate i throughout their length simultaneously but operate more with a shearing action. This provides a stronger construction, there is less vibration than where the bars are straight or, par'- allel with planes passing through the longitudinal axis of the roll, and the operation is efficient with less noise. f
'I'he invention may be embodied in other" tial characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather in spaced relation longitudinally thereof provided with circumferentially spaced aligned slots, cutter bars extending longitudinally and disposed in each of said slots, members extending between and into adjacent bars of a pair thereof and adjacent said rings provided with radially disposed openings, bushings threadedly engaging said body below said openings provided with threaded openings', and cap screws extending through the openings in said members threadedly engaging the openings in said bushings.
4. A beater roll of the class described comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical unitary roll body having rings secured thereto in spaced relation longitudinally thereof provided with circumferentially spaced aligned slots, cutter bars extending longitudinally and disposed in each of said aligned slots, members extending between and into pairs of adjacent bars adjacent said rings provided with radially disposed openings, bushings threadedly engaging said body :below said openings provided with threaded vjfopenings, and cap screws extending through the iopenings in said members threadedly engaging the openings in said bushings, the said bushings lfleeing of a metal which is relatively non-corrosive with respect to the material of the body,

5. A beater roll of the class described comy ,'Iprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical than by the foregoing description, and all modications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended t0 be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A beater roll of the class described comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical unitary roll body having intermediate circumferential ring section slots, circumferential rings around opposite ends thereof, sectionalized rings in said slots, members threadedly engaging said body provided with slots receiving adjacent ends of adjacent ring sections, weld means securing said ends to said members, said rings provided with circumferentially spaced cutter bar slots, longitudinally extending cutter bars in each of said slots, and weld means securing said bars in said cutter bar slots.
2. A beater roll of the class described comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical unitary roll body having intermediate circumferential ring section slots, circumferential rings around opposite ends thereof, sectionalized rings in said slots, members threadedly engaging said body provided with slots receiving adjacent ends gunitary roll body having longitudinally spaced circumferential sectionalized ring slots,rings composed of sections, said rings provided with circumferentially spaced slots for cutter bars with the said slots of the rings in alignment, single bars in the aligned slots of the rings, and means securing the bars in saidv cutter bar slots of the rings including securing members extending between adjacent cutter bars forming pairs thereof and into openings provided in said cutter bars and other members extending into said body and through openings provided in said first-named members.
6. A beater roll of the class described comprising in combination, an elongated cylindrical unitary roll body having spaced circumferential sectionalized ring slots, rings composed of sections in said slots, weld means associated with adjacent ends of the sections of the rings securing them together in said slots, said rings provided with cutter bar slots disposed longitudinally of the body with the slots of the rings in alignment, cutter bars in said cutter bar slots extending longitudinally of the roll body, means securing said cutter bars in said slots including members between and extending into adjacent bars forming pairs thereof and spaced along said pairs and other threaded members passing through said first-named members threadedly engaging said body.
