Claims.
My invention disclosed :herein relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable door and window grilles.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved grille arrangementwhereby :the same may be extended or contracted, adjusted horizontally or vertically, so 'that the grille may be adapted for convenient installationin windows or doors .of varying size or shape :by the simple adjustment of th grille without the necessity oi cutting or difficult fitting operations. 1
Further it is an-object of myinvention to .provide a grille arrangement having base'bars'forming a quadrangle mounted and secured within the opening of a door or'window by other bars and attachment members independent of the base bars. The base bars, other bars and attachment members so arranged as to permit the greatest contraction and extension of the :body of the grille.
Moreover it is an object of my invention to provide a plurality of fastening members for securing the grille to the frame of a door or Window, which fastening members are so arranged that as the grille is extended .or contracted the said attachment members will remain in alignment and will each be equally adjusted.
It is a further object of my invention toprovide an independent means for extending or con'- .an improved grille adapted to protect door screening and serving as a means for preventing the door from warping or sagging and further providing an additional safe guard and a burglar bar for doors or windows.
Other objects and advantages of my invention are set forth in the following description, taken with the accompanying drawings; and the novel features thereof are pointed out in the appended claims. The disclosure, however, is illustrative only and I may make changes in detail, especially in matters of shape, size and arrangements of parts within the principle of the invention, to the full extent indicated by the terms in which the appended claims are expressed.

My improved grille herein disclosed is preferably formed of suitable metal strips twisted in a manner Well known in the art so as to present at their points of crossing flat surfaces to each other, at which points the same are pivotally connected by rivet-s or other suitable means.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figure 1, 2 and 3 has provided the principal base bar structure as shown in Figure 7 including the primary base bars indicated by numerals I and 2 and the secondary base bars indicated by the numerals 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The primary base bars I and 2 are crosswise disposed and pivotally connected at the center thereof as at l.
The secondary base bars 5 and 6 are pivotally connected at the adjacent ends thereof. The opposite end of the bar 5 is pivotally connected at one end of the primary base bar 2 while the other end of the bar 6 is pivotally connected to one end. of the primary base bar l.
The secondary base bars 3 and 4 are likewise pivotally connected at the adjacent ends thereof and are likewise pivotally connected to the other ends of the primary base bars I and 2 respectively. This structure as shown in Figure 7 provides a pair of equal sided oppositely positioned and pivotally connected Quadrangles.
A supplemental base bar structure is further provided as shown in Figure 8 including two pairs of supplemental base bars, 4 and 9, and I and I i, respectively.
Each base bar in each pair is disposed crosswise to the other base bar of the said pair and are pivotally connected thereto. Furthermore the supplemental base bar 9 is pivotally connected at one end to the adjacent end of the supplemental base bar E9 of the opposite pair and the supplemental base bar 8 is likewise pivotally connected at one end to the adjacent end of the supplemental base bar l l.
The supplemental base bar structure as shown in Figures 1 and 8 forms a third quadrangle having sides of equal length, pivotally interconnected with the two larger quadrangles formed by the principal base bar structure. The same are so positioned that the point of pivotal connection 1 between the two primary base bars is placed at the center of the said third quadrangle. The supplemental base bars 8 and I!) extend in parallel relationship to, equally distanced from and at opposite sides of the primary base bar I, while the supplemental base bars 9 and I! are similarly positioned with respect to the primary base bar 2 Moreover, each I of the said supplemental base bars are in turn pivotally connected to the primary and secondary base bar extending crosswise thereto as at I6 and I1 respectively.
Further, at the free ends of the supplemental base bars 8, 9, l6 and H are provided curved or curled attachment members l8, I9, and 2| respectively adapted to serve as a convenient means for attaching my improved grille structure to the frame of a door or window.
Further in the form of my invention illustrated in Figure 1 there are provided two pairs of primary attachment bars, one pair including the bars 22 and 23 and the other pair including the bars 24 and 25. The primary attachment bars of each pair are disposed in crosswise relation and pivotally connected as at 26 and 27.
The primary attachment bars 23 and 24 are pivotally fastened in opposite quadrangles, but extend in parallel relation to the primary base bar I while the primary attachment bars 22 and are similarly fastened and extend in parallel relation to the primary base bar 2.
The said primary attachment bars are positioned between the parallel extending secondary base bar and the parallel extending supplemental base bar equally distanced therefrom and pivotally attached to the crosswise extending primary base bar, supplemental base bar, primary attachment bar and secondary base bar as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
At the end of the said primary attachment bars 22, 23, 24 and 25, nearest the primary base bar, there are provided curved or curled fixed end attachment members 28, 29, 38 and 3| respectively adapted to serve as a convenient means for attaching the grille structure to the frame of a door or window.
At the other end of the said primary attachment bars there are provided extensible end attachment members indicated by numeral 32.
The said extensible attachment members 32 as shown in Figure 9 are provided with an arm member 33 which is twisted so as to present a flat surface for connection to the link member 34. The link member 34 is pivotally connected at one end by the rivet 35 to the adjacent end of the arm member 33 and the said link member is pivotally fastened at the other end by the rivet 36 to the adjacent end of the primary attachment bar.
The arm member 33 of the attachment member 32 approximates the length of the link member 34. The attachment member 32 may be readily retracted independently of the grille proper by merely pivoting the link member 34 together with the arm member 33 so that the same are brought together in a closed position as shown in Figure 9. The said extensible adjustment member of Figure 9 is shown in dotted lines in a second adjusted position. Moreover the attachment member 32 may be readily extended independently of the extensible grille proper by pivoting the arm member 33 and the link member 34 so as to place the same in longitudinal alignment as shown in Figures 2 and 5.
A second form of my invention is illustrated in Figures 4, 5 and 6. The latter form of my invention has provided the base bar structure including the primary base bars 31, 38, 39 and 40.
The said primary base bars are pivotally connected in series at the opposite ends thereof as at 4! so as to form a quadrangle having sides of equal length as shown in Figures 4 and 10.
There are further provided the attachment bars 42, 43, 44 and 45 having as shown in Figure 4 the fixed attachment member 46 provided at one end and the extensible attachment member 32, previously described, provided at the opposite end.
The bars 42 and 43 extend parallel to and in spaced relation to the base bars 31 and 39 and the said bars are spaced an equal distance apart. The bars 42 and 43 extend in crosswise relation to the base bars 38 and 4D. The attachment bars 44 and 45 extend in crosswise relation to the base bars 3! and 39 and the attachment bars 42 and 43. The attachment bars 44 and 45 extend parallel to and in spaced relation to the base bars 38 and 40. The said bars 49, 43, 45 and 38 are spaced an equal distance apart. The base bars and the attachment bars at the points of crossing are pivotally connected by rivet or other suitable means.
As shown in the disclosure of Figure 4 the extensible attachment members 32 are provided for attachment to the upper and lower frame of the window, while the fixed attachment members 46 are shown for attachment to the sides of the Window frame.
However, in either the form of my invention illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 or Figures 4, 5 and 6 the extensible attachment members may obviously be placed at the sides instead of the top or the grille may be constructed with extensible attachment members at the sides as well as the top.
The attachment members are fastened to the top side and bottom frame of a door or window by screws as shown or in any other suitable manner well known in the art.
It will be readily seen that in the mechanical arrangement of my grille disclosed in Figure 4 that as the grille is extended or retracted the fixed side fastening members will be equally adjusted and will remain in alignment with the side frame of the door or window. Likewise, it will be seen that in the'form of my invention illustrated in Figure l there'has been combined in a novel manner the mechanical features of two of the grilles shown in Figure 4. INA grille comprising a pair of pivotally intercrossing primary base bars, two pairs of secondary basebars, the secondary base bars of each pair being pivotally connected together at one of the longitudinal ends of each of thesaid secondary base bars, and the other longitudinal end of one of each pair of secondary base bars being pivotally connected to the longitudinal end of one of the said intercrossing primary base bars, and the other secondary base bar of each pair having the other longitudinal end thereof pivotally connected to the longitudinal end of the other of the said interconnecting primary base bars, said primary and secondary base bars thereby forming a pair of adjustable quadrangles, attachment bars pivotally connected to the said base bars intermediate the longitudinal ends of the said base bars, attachment members mounted on the said attachment bars and positioned in spaced relation to each other, whereby the said grille may be freely adjusted to the opening of a door or window of varying size and the attachment members adjusted in alignment with the frame of the said door or Window.

A grille comprising two pairs of base bars, attachment members positioned in spaced relation to each other and mounted on the said base bars, the base bars of each pair pivotally intercrossing each other, and each of the base bars of each pair having one of the longitudinal ends the'reeif pivotally con ease to t e mammal end ar eas erthe bas tars or the other p'air,

A grille comprising a pair of intercrossing primary base bars, two pairs of supplemental base bars, the base bars of each pair of supplemental base bars pivotally intercrossing each other, and each of the supplemental base bars of each pair having one of the longitudinal ends thereof pivotally connected to the longitudinal end of one of the supplemental base bars of the other pair, attachment members provided at the other end of the said supplemental base bars, and means pivotally connecting the said supplemental base bars to the said primary base bars, two pairs of attachment bars, the attachment bars of each pair pivotally intercrossing, attachment members provided at the opposite ends of said attachment bars, each of the said attachment bars pivotally connected to one of the said primary base bars, and each of said attachment members arranged in spaced relation to the other of said attachment members, whereby the said grille may be adjusted for fixation to the frame of a door or window.

A grille comprising two pairs of attachment bars, each pair of attachment bars pivotally intercrossing the other pair, link members, each of said link members laterally pivoted to an end of the said attachment bars, attachment arms laterally pivoted to the said link members and curled attachment members mounted on the said attachment arms, whereby the said curled attachment members of the said grille may be adjusted and the said attachment arms adjustably positioned.

A grille comprising a set of intercrossing primary base bars, attachment bars pivotally intercrossing the said base bars, a link member connected at one of the longitudinal ends of each of the said attachment bars in such a manner as to pivot laterally, an attachment member connected to each of the said link members so as to pivot laterally thereto, whereby upon pivotal movement of the said link members the said attachment members may be adjustably extended.

A grille comprising a plurality of base bars, each of the said base bars having another base bar pivotally connected at the opposite longitudinal ends thereof and the said interconnected base bars forming a quadrangle, attachends to an end of the said attachment bars and ment bars pivotally connected to the said base bars, intermediate the longitudinal ends of the said base bars, laterally pivoted extensible attachment means including fastening members and laterally pivoted link members, each of said to an end of the said fastening member so as to effect adjustment of the said attachment means to the opening of a door or window of varying size and shape.

A grille comprising two sets of connected intercrossing bars, attachment members, laterally pivoted link members, each of said link members pivotally connected at opposite ends to an end of the said bars and to an end of the said attachment members whereby the said attachment members may be adjusted to effect attachment of the said grille to the frame of an opening of varying size and shape.

A grille comprising in combination a pair of intercrossing primary base bars, two pairs of secondary base bars, the secondary base bars of each pair being pivotally connected together at the adjacent longitudinal ends thereof, the other longitudinal ends of each pair of secondary base bars being pivotally connected one end to a longitudinal end of one of the said intercrossing primary base bars and the other end pivotally connected to a longitudinal end of the other intercrossing primary base bar so as to form a pair of adjustable quadrangles, two pairs of supplemental base bars, the base bars of each pair of supplemental base bars pivotally intercrossing each other, and each of the supplemental base bars of each pair having one of the longitudinal ends thereof pivotally connected to a longitudinal end of one of the supplemental base bars of the other pair so as to form a third adjustable quadrangle, attachment members mounted at the other ends of said supplemental base bars, each of said attachment members positioned in spaced relation and freely movable in relation to the other of said attachment members, and means operably connecting said supplemental base bars to said primary base bars, said primary, secondary and supplemental base bars thereby forming a plurality of operably connected adjustable quadrangles, whereby said grille may be adjusted and the attachment members aforesaid positioned in alignment with the frame of an opening for fixation thereon.
