' DUAL PURPOSE BUCKLE Filed Jan. 20, 1942 JOSEPH A SCH/1L ET 8. MAUR/OE DPOL-LACK INVEN TORS TTORNE Y Patented July 13, 1943 DUAL PURPOSE BUCKLE Joseph P. Schalet, Bronx, and Maurice D. Pollack, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application January 20, 1942, Serial No. 427,498
1 Claim.
This invention relates to buckles, and more particularly to buckles capable of functioning either as a buckle, or as an ornamental brooch.
The objects of our invention are. to provide a buckle, preferably in two parts each of which parts may be attached to one end of a belt or coat for securing the two ends together; to provide means for detachably interlocking the tWo parts to their respective ends; to provide means,
for adjustably interlocking the two parts to each other; and to provide means whereby both or either of the two parts may be separately .at-
tachedfor ornamental display purposes, such as for a brooch, etc.
We accomplish these and other objects and ob.- tain our new results as will be apparent from the device described in the following specification particularly pointed out in the attached claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of our buckle used on a belt.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side view of our buckle with all parts detached.
Fig. 4 is an additional side view illustrating one part of the buckle, used as a brooch.
In the drawing, reference numerals l0, and H designate the two body portions of our buckle, containing on their front surfaces ornamental mountings l2 and i3 respectively.
On the rear side of each, and extending normally therefrom, is soldered an extending ear, in dicated as M and I5, containing threaded apertures l6 and I]. Each ear is positioned on the body portion at a point substantially adjacent to that edge, in proximity to the other body portion.
Body portion It! is provided with a loop 18 which is rotatably mounted on the arm Ill. The remaining end of the arm is threaded as at 2! for engagement with threaded aperture it of ear M.
The body portion H is provided with a corresponding hook 22 having a threaded end 23 for engagement with threaded aperture ll of ear l5.
The hook is designed to engage loop I8, interlocking the two body sections l0 and I I.
Because the interlocking means are detachable from their respective ears l4 and I5, they may be readily removed when not needed.
The two body sections are also provided with securing means for attaching the two sections to two ends of a belt, such as 24 and 25 respectively, shown in Fig. 1.
This may consist of pin clasps 26 and 21 shown in detail in Fig. 4, each having a body section 28, extending hinge section 29, hinge 3B, hinged pin clasp 3|, and pin clasp locking means 32, pref.-
erably of the safety type and well known in the art.
Other well known types of securing means may be used.
By any of the foregoing types, we are able to instantly attach our device to two ends of a material for securing the two ends together. We are further enabled to lessen the distance between the two body portions, i. e., tighten the buckle, by simply threading the threaded arms [9 and 23 into their respective threaded ears. Or we may loosen by unthreading or detach altogether when the hook and eye interlocking means are not needed and use the two body portions as ordinary brooches or apparel ornaments by use of the securing means shown in Fig. 4. When the hook and eye portions are removed, the device loses its buckle appearance and does not interfere with its use as a brooch. This is illustrated in Fig. 4 where body portion It is used as a brooch attached to fabric 33.
Body portion ll may individually be used as a buckle by itself, the hook 22 being directly inserted into the apertures 34, in one end of the belt, 24, see Fig. 1, and securing means 27 used to attach the buckle [B to the remaining end 25 of the belt.
We have thus described our invention, but we desire it understood that it is not confined to the particular forms or uses shown and describedthe same being merely illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out in other ways without departing from the spirit of our invention, and
therefore, we claim broadly the right to employ all equivalent instrumentalities coming within the scope of the appended claim, and by means of which, objects of our invention are attained and new results accomplished, as it is obvious that the particular embodiments herein shown and described are only some of the many that can be employed to attain these objects and accomplish these results.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
A buckle for attaching two pieces of fabric together, comprising two body sections, each lying in the plane of the fabric, and having a normally extending ear section provided with a threaded aperture, securing means for the body sections for attaching each body section to a piece of the fabric; and. interlocking means for separably attaching the two body sections to each other, said interlocking means terminating in a pair of boltlike portions extending in the plane of the fabric, and threaded for engagement with the threaded apertures of the body portions.
JOSEPH P. SCHALET. MAURICE D. POLLACK.
