UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS W. BERGER, OF CANAL WINOHESTER, OHIO.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,440, dated September 21, 1880,
Application filed .my 17,1eso. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lnwrs WASHINGTON BERGER, of Canal Winchester, in the county of Franklin and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specilication.
Figure 1 isa perspective view ofthe improve- Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a -panel and its support'ing-lirace. Fig. 3 is a side elevation ot' a part ot' the fence. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view taken through the line .za', Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference spending parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish felices so constructed that they can he easily and quickly set up, taken down, and moved from place to place, and which will allow any desired panel to be removed to open a passa geway without disturbing the other panels.
lhe invention consists in vconstructing a portable fence ot' horizontal boards connected at their ends by pairs ot' upright boards having a V-shaped notch at one end et' each panel, the V-shaped braces attached at their lower ends to the side edge of sills, the locking-bars, and the pins and Wedges for securing the adjacent ends ofthe panels to each other, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Each panel is formed oi' four (more or less) horizontal boards, A, as the desired height ot' the fence may require, connected by upright boards B, attached to the opposite sides of their ends.
When the panels are more than ten feet indicate correlong` they may be strengthened by upright the centers of the horizon- V-shaped or angular notch, O, to receive the upper ends of the bracebars D, which upper ends are secured to each other at an angle, as shown in Fig. 2. rlhe lower ends of the bracebars D are secured in notches in the side edge of the sill E, as shown in Fig. l, so that the adjacent ends of two panels can rest upon the same sill E, as shown in Figs. l and 3. The adjacent ends ofthe panels A B are connected by bars F, passed through the spaces between the horizontal boards A and the upright boards B, and having pins G driven through holes in one end, and wedges H driven through short slots in iheirother ends, as shown in Figs.
'ot' upright boards, I, is attached to the horizontal boards A of one ot' the panels, at a little distance troni the iirst pair of upright boards, B, as shown in Figs. l and 3, to form spaces to receive the locking-bars F, when the said panels meet at an angle.
When the fence is to be set up upon uneven or inclined ground the horizontal boards A are secured, by one nail at each end, to the upright Vboards B, so that the panel will have loose joints, and the boards A can be adjusted into an inclined position, while the boards B will still be upright and parallel. Thel fence is made permanent by setting posts J in the ground at or near each end of the fence, and nailing the boards A of the end panels to the said posts J, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A portable fence, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the horizontal boards A and the pairs of upright boards B, forming panels, and having V-shaped notches C at one end of each panel, the V-shaped braces D, the sills E, having notches in one edge, the locking-bars F, and pins G and wedges H, as set forth.
