W. A. PIPHER. Wagon Body Elevator,
f No. 232,4!4. Pmme 1,188.0.
ing wagon-bodies in sheds, barns, or other UNITED STATES WILLIAM A. PIPHER, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
J ASONVILLE, INDIANA.
WAGON-BODY ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent 1\Io. 232,414, dated September 21, 1880.
Application filed May 8,1880
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALLEN P1- PHER, of Jasonville, inthe county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Elevating Wagon-Bodies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accom panyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective View, Fig. 2' is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, of the operating mechanism.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to devices for elevatroofed structures; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the frame of the barn or other structure, which is provided with cross-pieces B B, havin g bearings G O fora longitudinal shaft, D. The latteris provided at one end with a ratchetwheel, E, adjoining which is journaled upon the said shaft D a lever, F, the lower end of which is loaded or weighted, so as to keep the upper end automatically in an upright position.
G is a spring-pawl attached to the lower part of lever F and engaging the ratchet- Wheel E. H is another spring (or weighted) pawl attached to one of the frame-pieces B, and engaging ratchet-wheel E, as shown.
The lever F is operated by means of a cord or chain, I, secured to its upper end, and the pawl G is so arranged that it may be released,
(No model.)
when desired, by means of a cord, J, attached thereto, passed through an eye, K, attached to rope I, and extending down to within reach of the operator.
L is a cord secured to the rear end of the pawl H for the purpose of disengaging said pawl from the ratchet-wheel E.
M M, are ropes wound upon shaft D or upon pulleys secured upon said shaft. To thelower ends of said ropes may be secured a wagonbody or any other object which it is desired to raise or elevate in the structure.
By reference to the drawings hereto annexed, and to the foregoing description, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, easily operated, and permits a wagon-body or other object to be at any time easily raised or lowered.
I am aware of the patent to Cunningham, No. 223,033, dated December 30, 1879, and I claim nothing therein shown.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in devices for elevating wagon-bodies, the combination of the shaft D, having ratchet-wheel E and weighted lever F, spring-pawl G, pivoted to said lever, springpawl H, rope I, having eye K, and the ropes J L, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and speci fied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ALLEN PIPHER. Witnesses:
MARTIN H. BONHAM, MARY E. BONHAM.
