N. N. HORI'ON. Dentists Chair.
No. 232,352. Patented sept. 2|-, 1880.
N.PEER$, PHOTOMTHOGRAFHEH, WASHINGTON. D C4 UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NUMON N. HORTON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
DENTISTS CHAI R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,352, dated September 21, 1880.
` Application filed October 29,1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NUMON N. HORTON, doctor oi medicine, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson andState ot' Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dentists7 and other Chairs, ot which the f'ollowing isa specification.
My invention relates, primarily, to den tists,
barbers and similar chairsbut m im )rovements are applicable, in part, to childrens chairs, and in part to reclining and other chairs.
My improvements consist in constructing the supporting-legs ot achair in the form ot a lazy-tongs frame, which I operate by a footlever in such manner as to raise the chair bodily to any height desired by the movement of said lazy-tongs legs, pawls and racks being provided io support the chair at any desired height. i
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the chair, partly elevated. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the chair in its lowest position and with the head-rest elevated and thrown backA Fig. 3 is a side view, showingl the chair elevated and the head-rest lowered and thrown forward in line with the back.
A represents the seat, and B the back, of the chair, which may be hinged together.
The chair may be provided with a foot-rest, and with means for supporting the back at any inclination, after either of the modes described in my patents of September 26, 1876, and October 15, 1878.
The legs or supports of the chair are formed of lazy-tongs frames C G, one at each side, hinged atc under each front corner of the sea-t, and slipping at c beneath each rear corner, in the path indicated by the dotted lilies.
The chair is raised by a pair of levers, D D, connected by a bar, E, so as to be moved by the hand or foot, and pivoted at their inner endsto thrust-rods F F, which .are connected to the upper intersections ot' the lazy-tongs arms, so that bearing down on the foot-bai-JE will elevate the chair. It is then caught at any height to which it is raised by pawls Gr G, each pivoted Vto one member ofthe respective frames, and engaging automatically with a ratchetrack, H H, on the upper surface of the member below. 1
The pawls G G are connected by a bar, I, so as to be raised simultaneously by means ot' a cord, J, which passes through an eye,`.K, at the back of the chair. ,A
N represents a head-rest, capable ot' vertical, front and back, and lateral adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what l claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination ot the chair-seat A, lazytongs supportiiig-frames O O, foot-lever D D E, pivoted to the frame and to thrust-rods F, and detaining-pawls G G, pivoted to one inember of the respective frames and connected together by bar I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
