Description

July 6, 1943. v s. BIRIGHT, JR 3,
QUICKLY-DETACHABLE SEAL Filed Sept 25, 1940 Patented July 6, 1943 UNiTED STATES FATENT OFFIQE QUICKLY DETACHABLEI SEAL Stanley Bright, J r.,
Bern Township,
Berks 1 Claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a quickly-detachable seal for containers or packages for food or the like such as glass jars having thin, metallic caps.
More specifically, my invention comprises, a container, a cap for said container having a flange adapted to be clamped around the mouth of said container, a ring of rubber or like compressible material contained between the container and the flange, and a relatively rigid wire passed through the ring beneath the flange and serving, upon being grasped by the hand of one desiring to open the container, to bend portions of the flange back and thus loosen them and to then furnish a leverage or bar against the edge of the cap, removing it from the container.
For a further exposition of my invention, reference may be had to the annexed drawing and specification at the end thereof my invention will be specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view.
Fig. 2 is a partial top plan view with parts broken away in horizontal cross-section.
.Fig. 3 is a view in vertical cross-section through a portion of the device on the line 3-3.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the ring and wire.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in lateral crosssection of a modification.
Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of a portion of the ring and wire of another modification.
In that embodiment of my invention chosen from among others for illustration in the drawing and description in the specification, my device is shown as consisting of a container I such as a jar of glass having a cap or lid 2 conveniently formed of relatively thin sheet-metal. As is best seen in Fig. 3, cap 2 has a flange or skirt 4 at its periphery while jar I has a lip 6 surrounding its mouth. To seal the mouth of jar I, there is provided a ring 8 of rubber or like elastic material. Ring 8 is arranged to be located between lip 6 and flange 4 so that, when cap 2 is applied to container I, the rim or edge of flange 4 may be crimped or bent over ring 8 as located at H] to seal the mouth of container I.
For the purpose of readily detaching cover 2 to permit access to the contents of container I, I provide a wire l2 conveniently made of material relatively rigid as compared to ring 8 such as metal. Wire I 2 may pass through holes in ring 8 and pass along a portion of the upper surface of ring 8 as indicated at M. This portion l4 may be of greater or less part of the circumference of ring 8.
As a modification shown in Fig. 5, wire 12 may be imbedded in ring 8 as shown at H4, the wire extending completely or partially through the circumference of ring 8.
In Fig. 6 is shown a second modification of my device in which the wire I2 is passed or threaded through ring 8 and has its upper ends looped about an anchor or pin 2| 4 which holds the wire from being pulled out of the ring.
I do not intend to be limited save as the scope of the appended claim may require.
I claim:
Improved means for opening a jar having an open mouth with a lip protruding from the outer surface of the wall and surrounding the mouth and having a rubber ring around the mouth below the lip and having a cap provided with a depending flange crimped onto the lip and rubber ring, said means comprising a wire attached to the rubber ring and depending between the flange and jar wall and constructed of material suffiicently rigid when the depending end of the Wire is turned away from the jar, to pry and bend the flange outwardly, loosening the flange and ring.
