This invention relates to a device for makin pompons, preferably a plurality thereof, in the same series of operations.
The object of the device is to provide needleworkers with a simple device having the respective elements so arranged that the worker need make no calculations or adjustments of the parts of the device, but may make a plurality of pompons by the same series of operations merely bywinding, tying and cutting operations.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a schematic view of the device with the tying cords attached; Fig. 2 the same as Fig. 1 with the yarn wound thereon; Fig. 3 similar to Fig. 2 showing two sections of tied yarns; Fig. 4 a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a portion of the device showing a cut in the yarn and the scissor knives about to cut another section; Fig. 6 illustrates a finished pompon.
The body I of the device may be made of composition, rubber, Bakelite, metal, or other suitable sheet material. The body I is provided at the top edge 2 thereof with a series of slots, the shorter slots 3 being for the reception of a cord 4 and the longer slots 5 being for the accommodation of the cutting points of a pair of scissors. The ends of the body are provided preferably with indentations 6. The bottom edge of the body is formed with a series of notches l for spacing the cord 4.
The manner of operation of the device is as follows:
A piece of cord 4, preferably of double thickness, is laid in diagonal courses, around the body I beginning at the lower left notch I to the nearest cord slot 3 and then alternately from each succeeding notch 1 to a cord slot 3 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
A multiplicity of layers of worsted or cotton yarn 8, or other types of thread, are wound crosswise of the body, supported at the indentations 6 and lying over the slots 3 and 5 and imparts over or in proximity to the top edge of the cord 4. The yarn 8 may be laid in such number of layers as is preferred, but eight to twenty will be sufficient for a single pompon. The cords 4 are then cut through at the portions 9 near the notches 1, providing loose ends which are used for tightly tying the yarn at the portions lying near the cord slots 3. A double. knot tightly drawn around the yarn is suflicient to divide the yarn into a series of sections having spaced portions bound together. The .yarn is then cut, preferably with a pair of scissors, through the cutting slots 5, and is also cut across the loops lying in the indentations I. A series of bars or bunches are thereby produced, each comprising a series of short sections of yarn tied together in the middle by the cords 4. The bars are then slipped from the body and the loose ends are fluifed to form a pompon as illustrated in Fig. 6. The loose ends of the cords are used for suspending the pompon from an article wherewith it is to be decorated.
The notches I may be omitted and the lower edge of the device may be provided with a straight edge, but in such case the worker must depend upon her judgment in positioning the lower edge of the cords. A locking indentation may also be formed in the side edge of the device to firmly hold the starting end of the cord winding.
It is to be noted that the layers of yarn may be laid, course upon course, in regular order and to several depths, this system permitting the use of yarn having sections or portions of varying colors. Such varying colors may consequently be laid in regular order and retained, in such order, during the tying and cutting steps, thereby producing a finished pompon made up of a series of differently colored threads or lengths of yarn.
This invention is illustrated in connection with the forming of six pompons simultaneously, but the device may be readily formed to produce two pompons or a multiple thereof simultaneously.
I claim:
1. In the process of making a plurality of pompons or the like upon a substantially flat former having a plurality of tying cord receiving slots and a plurality of slots adapted to receive a severing instrument, comprising laying a continuous tying cord in a plurality of angularly disposed sections upon both sides of said former in the tying cord receiving slots at substantially equally spaced distances, forming a series of yarn windings angularly with respect to said tying cords, tying the tying cords about said windings, inserting a severing implement Bibetween the piston and member 'I'Q-fluid-tight. into said severing implement receiving slots and severing that portion of the windings lying over said slots. 7
2. The process of making a plurality of pompons or the like comprising laying a continuous length of cord in a series of sections upon a fiat body of sheet material, and upon both sides of said body, the sections being in angular and spaced relation, forming a series of windings crosswise with respect to one end of said sections, severing said sections at a point spaced from said crosswise winding and tying the crosswise winding with said sections and finally severing the crosswise winding between said ties.
