4 Claims, 9 Drawing Figures DEVICE FOR MAKING YARN POMPONS AND FLOWERS 1 This invention relates to a device for making yarn designs.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a device for making yarn designs which includes a wide wrapping area for yarn and which also includes a slotted tying area of less width than the wrapping area so that the tension of a wrapping can be released by sliding the latter from the wrapping area to the tying area to facilitate cinching a tie member around the wrapping intermediate their ends, a slot being provided in the wide wrapping area so that the board can be pinched together if desired to slide the yarn to the tying area.
Other objects are to provide an enlarged eye in the inner end of the slot in the tying area for threading said tie member into said slot, and to provide the slot in the tying area of a narrow width to catch a slip knot for assisting in the tying of certain yarn designs.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a device which is simple, yet effective in use yet extremely low in cost for attraction to a wide market.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the device.
FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are also perspective views but show successive stages in applying the invention to making a pompon. 7
FIG. 6 is a view showing the operation of severing the pompon loops.
FIG. 7 is a view of a finished pompon.
FIG. 8 shows a rosette that may be formed when the loops are not severed.
FIG. 9 shows the rosette of FIG. 8 as it might be used in crochet work.
Referring to FIGS. 1 through 7, FIG. 1 shows a board or flat body member 10 according to the invention. Board 10 has a wide or wrapping part 11 with a slot 12 and a narrow or tying part 13 in which there appears a slot 14 terminating in an eye 15.
Referring to FIG. 2, a length of yarn l6, sufficient for a pompon, is wound on board portion 11 as seen at 17. A separate piece of yarn 18, for tying the pompon, is provided with a slip knot loop 19.
Referring to FIG. 3, wrapped yarn 17 is shown slid down to narrow part 13. Slot l2 permits winding yarn 16 tightly, yet the yarn can be slid off easily by pinching the ends of part 11 if desired.
Referring to FIG. 4, wrapped yarn 17 is omitted for clarity but is indicated by a dotted outline. One end of the tie 18 is brought through eye 15, then brought around wrapped yarn l7 and then through loop 19. It
is evident that upon pulling on both ends of yarn l8, wrapped yarn l7 is tightly tied at the midpoint. Referring to FIG. 5, which shows the tightly tied yarn 18, the ends of yarn 18 can be used for attachment in use, such being apparent in FIG. 7.
The yarn is slipped off the tying end of board 10 and then cut as seen in FIG. 6, to form an element in the production of a finished pompon shown in FIG. 7. As seen in FIGS. 2-5, the slotl4 is quite narrow so that a slip knot formed in the tie 18 will not easily pass therethrough. This allows ones hands to be free to thread yarn through the eye 15, when in the process of tying a large pompon.
With fewer windings and eliminating the cutting operation shown in FIG. 6, the rosette of FIG. 8 is obtained. This rosette may be left free or attached in some decorative manner as, for example, an outer crochet connection as shown in FIG. 9.
It becomes evident that this device is extremely simple and fast in use. It should be noted that, within this scope of the invention, the device is not limited to yarn but may be used with any material such as string, straw, plastic thread and the like. Slot 12 in the wrapping area permits some other functions to be accomplished at this end of the device such as the making of hairpin I lace.
What I claim is:
l. A device for making yarn designs comprising:
a. a flat body member having a wrapping area at one end thereof arranged to receive lateral-yarn wrappings and having a tying area at the other end of less width than the said wrapping area,
b. the said body member at its side edges being tapered from the wrapping area to the narrower tying area whereby the tension of yarn wrapped at the wrapping area is released upon sliding the wrapped yarn along the tapered area to the tying area,
c. and means defining a longitudinal slot in the tying area of said body member for cinching a tie member around the wrappings intermediate their ends,
d. said slot opening through the end of said body member at the tying area end.
2. The device of claim 1 including a longitudinal slot in said wrapping area.
3. The device of claim 1 including an enlarged eye in the inner end of said slot in the tying area for threading said tie member into said slot.
4. The device of claim 3 wherein said slot in the tying area is of a width great enough to allow a tie member to move freely therethrough but to catch a knot in the tie member.
Claims (4)
