l Claim.
This invention relates to a bench vise and particularly to a universal bench vise adjustable around three axes at right angles to each other.
Among the more important objects of the invention are:
To provide in a bench vise an adaptor whereby a bench vise adjustable around two axes at right angles to each other may be Converted into a universal bench vise adjustable around three axes at right angles to each other; to provide as an article of manufacture a bench vise adaptor per se; and to provide an improved combination of bench vise and adaptor.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved bench vise adapted for use on drill presses and milling machines for better enabling the operator to locate the desired angle at which holes are to be drilled and surfaces machined.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide an improved bench vise better adapted to meet the need of the Welders craft, wherein universal adjustment is an important factor. It is also an object of the invention to provide a more compact and sturdy assembly of clamping structures wherein a succession of turnable parts are employed and are provided With means for clamping them securely in the desired adjusted relations to each other.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made Within the scope of that which is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention as now reduced to practice, approved and being sold to the trade,
Fig. l is a side elevation of a bench vise embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same partly in elevation and partly in section, on a larger scale.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the adaptor per se.
Fig. is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. l.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the invention therein shown comprises a circular base I,
a primary divided yoke r, provided with a cylindrical bore 2a, swivelly mounted on said base to rotate in a horizontal plane, an adaptor 3 having a cylindrical stem 4 mounted in said bore 2a to rotate in a vertical plane around the axis X-X, and a jaw assembly 5 having a cylindrical stem 6 mounted in the cylindrical bore 'la of the divided yoke 1 of said adaptor to rotate in a ver-y tical plane around the axis Y-Y. The stem 6 of the jaw assembly is also interchangeable Within the cylindrical bore 2a of the divided yoke 2.
The cylindrical stem 4 of the adaptor is preferably constructed hollow as shown in Fig. 3, and the divided yoke I is circular with its curved portion connected to the closed end of the stem 4 in an eccentric or offset relation thereto with the axis of its bore la at right angles to the axis of the stem 4. Around the stem 4 adjacent the juncture of the yoke with the stem 4 extends a laterally directed circumferential flange 4a to abut against the peripheral face of the divided yoke 2 adjacent its counterbore and afford stop means to limit the insertion of the stem of the adaptor into the bore 2a.
Ears 8 are provided on the base I for securing the same to a bench, and the yoke 2 is swivelly connected to the base by means of the cap screw 9 and washer Ill. Clamp II secures the yoke 2 adjustably to the base I through the medium of the clamping bolt I2, sai-d bolt being insertable through one or more openings I3 in the base and the head of the bolt being movable in a complete circle within the widened bottom portion of the annular channel or groove I4 in the base. Said bolt is always in an eccentric relation to the axis about which the yoke 2 turns and affords means for minute circumferential adjustment of the yoke.
The cylindrical yoke 2 is parted at I5 on one side and provided with cooperating ears I5 adapted to be drawn towards each other by means of the screw bolt I I so as to grip adjustably either the hollow stem 4 of the adaptor when it is used or the polygonally slotted stem 6 of the jaw assembly when the adaptor is omitted.
The cylindrical yoke 'I of the adaptor is likewise parted at I8 on one side and provided with cooperating ears I9 adapted to be drawn towards each other by means of the screw bolt 2i) whereby to rmly grip adjustably the stem 5 of the jaw assembly.
With the polygonally slotted stem E is integralized the rear jaw cheek 2I of the jaw assembly 5, said cheek having a polygonal slot which registers with the slot in the stem B to accommodate the polygonal stem 22 of the front jaw cheek 23. Cheek 2| is also provided with a cantilever arm 24 the better to support the jaw cheek 23 when the latter is outwardly projected by operating the screw 25 to move the gripping jaw 26 farther away from its jaw mate 21. Abutments 28 and 29, located at either side of the stem 22 and arm 24 and integral with the cheek 2|, further stabilize and strengthen the jaw assembly as a whole when the parts 26 and 2'1 are separated as aforesaid. The manner of operating the jaws 26 and 21 relatively to one another through the medium of the screw 25 to grip a body being held therebetween, is a Way that is well known and the description of which need not be repeated here.
By constructing the adaptor 3 (Fig. 4) with a hollow cylindrical stem at one end, said stem having a closed end with a peripheral flange 4a projecting outwardly therefrom and providing a circular divided yoke attached to the closed end of said stem in the laterally oset manner shown in said Fig. 4, a right angular recess results which is bounded on one side by said closed stem end and on the other side by one of the open ends of said divided yoke. This recess may be occupied by that part of the stem 22 of the movable vise jaw 26 which projects from said open side of said divided yoke thereinto, thus keeping said projecting stem from obstructing a clockwise movement of the jaw assembly 5 from the horizontal position thereof shown in Fig. 2 to an upstanding position. This feature widens the range o f adjustability and yet retains compactness.
What is claimed is:
A universal mounting for a base supported tool l0 comprising an adaptor having a longitudinally extending cylindrical stem adjustably supported in the base, an outstanding circular flange at the base of the cylindrical stem to limit the insertion of the cylindrical stem into the base support, a l5 reduced neck integrally formed with the base of the cylindrical stem and axially extending therefrom in an offset relation relative thereto, and a split yoke integrally connected to the reduced neck portion and disposed with its opening at right angular relation to the cylindrical stem, said split yoke having clamping means to retain an inserted tool in desired adjusted position.
