The present invention relates to'a novel sash construction and setting for plate glass and especially adapted for store fronts in which the pane of glass is firmly retained in position Without the application of any material pressure, tension or strain thereon, and permitting it to yield under strains and stresses to which the glass may be subjected.
The invention further comprehends the provision of a self-locking moulding or outer sash member which may be readily installed and locked in position from the exterior of the building without the use of any tools, and which when installed, cannot be removed from the exterior until it has been released from its interlocking engagement with the inner sash member. This release can only be accomplished from the interior of the building.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a plurality of spaced resilient brackets-or lugs associated with the outer moulding or sash member and adapted to automatically lock with the inner moulding or sash member when the outer moulding is assembled, and which brackets or lugs and the outer moulding can only be released from the interior of the window for disassembly or removal.
The present invention eliminates all use and necessary manipulation of screws, clamps, levers or other mechanisms required in prior store front assemblies for positioning and locking the sash members or mouldings in their proper relationship. This results in a considerable saving in cost, time and labor in the manufacture and assembly or installation.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efficiency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as are inherently possessed thereby. While I have disclosed in the drawing a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change and comprehends other details, arrangements of parts, features and constructions without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawing, the embodiment selected to illustrate the novel invention comprises a novel setting S for support a panevof plate glass in which the sash construction includes an outermoulding or sash member I which may be of rolled or extruded material, and an inner sash member 2 which may be securely attached at 3 to theriser and sill or other framework 4 of the storev front outlining the window opening. This inner member is also preferably of extruded or rolled metal and formed with a gutter or trough 5 provided with a series of ventilating or drain holes 6 through which water or moisture may pass and be discharged through suitable openings 1 located at spaced points along the extent of the outer moulding or sash member I. In the forming of the inner sash member 2, this member is preferably rolled to provide a shoulder 8 against which an upstanding rib or projection 9 of the resilient lug or bracket [0 is adapted to engage. As will be evident from Figure 1, the novel setting extends completely about the window pane with the inner and outer sash members in holding engagement with the periphery of the glass.
The outer moulding or sash member I may be formed of any suitable sheet material or it may be extruded with a contour of any design desired. As clearly shown in the drawing, this outer moulding is preferably formed or providedwith a longitudinally extending groove or channel I I adjacent its upper edge and a plurality of spaced projections i2 struck up from the base I3 of this member. Each projection is adapted to be received in and interlock with a notch or cut-out l4 provided in the base flange iii of the bracket or lug. Also struck up from the bracket or lug is an upstanding tongue l6 adapted to be received in the channel ll of the outer sash member or moulding. These resilient lugs or brackets are suitably spaced apart throughout the extent of the outer moulding I.
In the assembly of the sash construction the inner member 2 is secured in position by means of the screws or other securing means 3. The pane of glass l! is then mounted in position upon spaced supporting blocks 18 and against the upstanding glass engaging rib or flange IQ of the inner sash member 2. The outer moulding or sash member I is then placed in the position shown in Figure 4 of the drawing and forced inwardly, with the projection or rib 9 of the resilient lug or bracket l0 riding over and directed or guided over the curved contour of the undersurface of the gutter 6 and thence snapping over the shoulder 8 to place the sash con- I struction in assembled relationship.
It will be readily apparent from Figure 3 of the drawing that when the outer moulding or sash member is in assembled relationship it cannot be removed from the exterior of the buildin because of the interlocking engagement between the inner and outer members. however, been made for the disassembly or removal of the parts. This is accomplished by the insertion of an instrument through the drain or ventilating openings 6 aligned with the brackets or lugs l0 and the depressing or forcing downwardly of the rearward portion of these brackets or lugs to disengage the rib 9 from the shoulder 8. When this disengagement has been accomplished, the outer moulding may be withdrawn from the pane of glass and the glass removed or the sash construction disassembled.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
1. A self-locking sash construction for supporting a pane of glass in a store front, window and the like which eliminates the use of screws, clamps, levers or other mechanism for locking the sash members in assembled relation, comprising an inner sash member secured to the window frame and against, which the interior ofthe glass seats, an outer sash member loose with respect to the window frame, lugs anchored to and spaced along the extent of the outer sash Provision has,
member and provided with a rearwardly extending resilient projection having an upstanding rib, and a gutter provided in the inner sash member having its undersurface curved and merging into a shoulder, said outer sash member when pressed inwardly into glass seating engagement, forces the upstanding rib over the curved undersurface of the inner sash member and snaps over and into interlocking engagement with the shoulder in which the outer sash member is locked against removal from the exterior of the glass, and means in the inner sash member afiording access to said resilient projection for depressing the latter and disengaging the upstanding rib from the shoulder to thereby release said lugs and outer sash member and permit their removal.
2. A self -locking sash construction for supporting a plate glass in a store front, window and the like, comprising an inner sash member secured to the store front or window frame and provided witha gutter disposed rearwardly of the glass, an outer sash member forming the face moulding for the sash construction, spaced resilient lugs anchored to and carried by the outer sash member and provided with a resilient, rearward extension and an upstanding rib, an offset provided adjacent the gutter in the inner sash member, said upstanding rib and ofiset being so disposed that when the outer sash member is forced inwardly into a position to seat against and retain the glass in assembled relation between the outer and inner sash members, said rib enters said offset and automatically locks the sash members together to thereby prevent release or removal of the outer sash member from the exterior of the glass, and openings provided inthe gutter forwardly of said ofiset and rearwardly of the glass for the insertion of a tool or other object for depressing said extension to disengage the rib and permit removal of the outer sash member.
