1 Claim.
This invention relates to mops, and more particularly to an improved handle structure for a mop.
An object of this invention is to provide a mop handle structure which includes an elongated handle and an improved mop swab holder and clamping means.
Another object of this invention is to provide a mop handle structure which is so constructed that it may be made entirely out of wood or other non-critical material.
A further object of this invention is to provide a mop handle structure which is so formed as to provide a splash guard.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a device of this kind, an improved swab holder which includes an upper clamping member detachably secured to the handle, and a lower clamping member detachably secured to the upper clamping member, the opposite longitudinal sides of the upper clamping member having a configuration such as to form a splash guard.
To the foregoing objects, and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Figure 1 is a sectional view, taken on the line l l of Figure 2, showing an improved handle and mop swab holding structure constructed according to an embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the swab;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of a modified form of this invention; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of a further modification of this invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l0 designates generally an upper clamping member which is rectangular in plan, and is provided with a threaded socket ll opening through the upper side thereof, and inclined to the vertical. An elongated handle I2, which is formed with a threaded lower end I3, is threaded into the socket II. The upper clamping member is preferably formed out of wood and is provided along the longitudinal edges thereof with opposed splash guards, generally designated as I4 and i5.
The guards l4 and I5 are of like construction and are formed by cutting the longitudinal edges or sides of the body or clamp H] as indicated at IS. The cut I6 is on a concave and merges at its upper edge in a convex rib I! which merges with the upper side of the upper clamp Ill. The
bottom face Ila of the upper clamp I0 is fiat and the lower clamp I8 is adapted to be disposed in face abutting relation with the lower side 11a of the upper clamp 10. The lower clamp i8 is formed with a flat upper side l9 and a convex or transversely arcuate lower side 28. i The upper side of the lower clamp 18 is provided with a longitudinally extending channel or recess 2| within which the webbing 22 of a mop swab 23 is adapted to engage. The swab 23 has a width substantially less than the length of the two clamp members l0 and 18, as shown in Figure 1. The lower clamp 18 is detachably held in clamping position by means of a pair of bolts 24. The bolts 24 are extended through openings 25 formed in the upper clamp l0 exteriorly of the longitudinal edges of the swab 23 and closely adjacent the opposite ends of the two clamps. The bolts 24 are threaded into threaded sockets or openings 26 which are formed in the lower clamp is. These bolts 24 may be formed of wood so that the entire clamp structure, including the handle l2, will be made out of wood.
- The swab 23 is adapted to extend downwardly from the lower clamp i8 on the opposite longitudinal edges thereof, as shown in Figure 2, and.
when in use the two guards M and I5 provide a means to prevent liquids from splashing on the upper side of the upper clamp ill and on the user of the device.
The convex lower side 20 of the lower clamp l8 provides an arcuate surface for permitting rocking of the clamp structure duringthe mopping operation.
Referring now to Figure 4, there is disclosed a mop and handle structure, similar to that shown in Figure 2, which includes an upper clamp lila similar in every detail to the upper clamp l0, and also includes a lower clamp Ilia similar to the lower clamp i8. A handle !2a is threaded into the upper side of the upper clamp Illa and a swab 23 is interposed between the two clamps Illa and I 8a. In this form a pair of bolts 27 are extended through openings 28 formed in the lower clamp member Illa, and the bolts 21 have the heads 29 thereof countersunk in the arcuate lower side 20a of the lower clamp 18a. The bolts 21 are also extended through openings 36 formed in the upper. clamp Hla which align with the openings 28 and wing nuts 3| are threaded onto the threads of the bolts 21.
In the use of this mop structure the swab 23 is interposed between the two clamping members IB and I8, and secured therebetween by the bolts 24. The mop structure may then be used in the conventional manner during which the splash guards l4 and [5 will operate to prevent or deter the splashing of the liquid, and lower arcuate side 20 of the lower clamp [8 will provide an arcuate surface which will be rocked during the sliding movement of the swab 23 over the surface which is being operated upon. During the use of the mop structure the swab 23 will be interposed between the surface worked upon and the arcuate lower side 20 of the clamp 18.
The modification shown in Figure 4 will operate in the same manner as that shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the exception that the bolts 27 will be loosely extended through the two clamping,
members and secured by the wing nuts 3|. The bolts 21 are in the same relative position with respect to the two clamping members lfla and la as the bolts 24 with respect to the clamping members l0 and I8, as shown in Figure 1.
There is shown a further modification oi this invention wherein the upper clamping member Nib has the handle l2b inserted in an unthreaded socket lib; ihe handle l2b is formed with a transverse opening 32 within the socket lib and a bolt or pin 33 is extended through an opening 34 which is formed transversely through the clamping member lab so that the bolt 33 may be extended through the opening 34 and the opening 32 in order to removably secure the handle [21) within the upper clamping member lllb. In other respects the structure shown in Figure 5 is similar in every detail to that shown in Figures 2 or 4.
I claim:
A mop handle and swab clamping structure comprising a handle, an elongated upper clamp secured to said handle, said upper clamp having a fiat lower side substantially narrower than the upper side, a pair of outwardly projecting upwardly divergent splash guards integral with the opposite longitudinal edges of said upper clamp, each guard formed With a concave outer side, a lower clamp provided with a flat upper side having a longitudinal channel within which the web of the mop is adapted to engage and also provided with a convex lower side, the upper side of said lower clamp being of a width substantially equal to the width of the lower side of said upper clamp, said channel dividing said lower clamp into a pair of spaced clamping portions confronting the lower flat side of said upper clamp to thereby clamp the swab transversely of the latter at a pair of spaced points with the web loosely engaging in said channel, and a pair of bolts detachably securing said clamps together, said bolts being disposed outwardly of the opposite edges of the swab.
