1 Claim.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in blades especially, though not exclusively, adapted for use in shreddingmachines and the like.
My invention has for its chief object the provision, as a new article of manufacture, of a shredding blade comprising a body-member uniquely equipped as a unit with divergingly spaced sharp double-edge arms oppositely'offset obliquely from the plane of the body-member for locating their sharp marginal edges for rotation in different rotary planes and the arms being so divergingly angularly disposed one to the other as to present their sharp edges obliquely to the plane of rotation of the body-member for effective rapid shredding action upon the material subjected thereto, the blade being also conveniently reversible for prolonging its useful life.
And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, tionof parts presently in the claims.

Referring now more characters to the drawing, which illustrates av preferred embodiment of my inventio A designates av shredding-machine which, brieiiy for present purposes described, includes a shell or casing C having a hopper H and rotatable within which is a shredding unit comprising a shaft S, a series of spaced disks D ilxed on the shaft S, an annular series of blade pivot-rods R iixed on the disks D in spaced parallel relation to the shaft S, and a grate or cage G through which the shredded material is discharged.
For effectively shredding the material fed into A also includes, in -the present instance, a plurality of more or less rapidly revolving blades B of my invention looselypivoted on the rods R.
Each blade` B, which is constructed as a unit of suitable metallic material and generally of oblong-rectangular contour, as best seen in Figin detail and by reference length to selectively extend suitably outwardly free end beyond the perimeter of the disk D force-operation with the grate or f arrangement, end combinathe hopper H, the shredding unit of the machine ures 2 and 4, in turn, includes a body-portion b preferably rounded at its one or rear I, is of suitable thickness for weight, strength, and rigidity, and is formed or provided adjacent its'end I with an eye or aperture 2 for swingable mounting on a rod R.

At a selected line or location, as at 5, spaced somewhat rearwardly from the base of -slot or cut-outv 4, the metal of the blade B is upset or deformed so that the arms b1, b2, while generally extending longitudinally of the blade B, are oppositely and diverging lor obliquely outwardly presented with respect to the plane of the bodyportion-l1I thereof, as shown. l
Beginning preferably at a point, asl atf 6, disposed 'approximately midway of the body-portion b between the offset-line 5 and the rear end l thereof and extending to the outer end of. the arms b1, b2, the blade B upon its opposite outer margins Vis chamfered or obliquely cut-away, as at 1, 1, and thereby formed or provided with correspondingly elongated f sharp or cutting or shredding edges 8,V 8. v
Also beginning approximately at, and along the offsetting line 5 andextending likewise to the outer end of the arms b1, b2, the blade -B upon its opposite iiat faces 3, 3, and alongthe inner side margins of the arms b1, b2, is furtherl chamfered -or cut-away, as at 9, and the arms b1, b2, thereby formed or provided along their inner side margins with sharp or cutting or shredding edges l0, I0.
So formed, each arm b1, as on the line 1, 1, Figure 2, and as best seen in Figure 7, might well be described as having the shape or form of' a rhomboid. However, as a result of the deformation of the metal of the blade B, the outwardly diverging relation of the arms b1, b2, and they marginal chamfering of the blade B as at 1 and 9, each blade B is provided or formed with two pairs of companion or co-operable cutting or shredding edges, that is to say, one pair comprising the outer cutting edge 8 of the one arm b1 and the inner cutting edge end, as atv b2, in cross-section,v
I of the other arm b2 and the other pair comprising the outer edge 8 of the one arm b2 and the inner cutting edge Ill of the arm b1, the cutting edges of each such pair correspondingly extending in outwardly diverging oppositely disposed oblique relation.
Hence, on rotary actuation of the shredding unit of the machine A, the respective companion cutting edges 8, l0, will be presented to the material being. acted upon in divergingly spaced planes obliquely angularly disposed to the plane of rotation of the body-member b of the respective blade B. The arms b1, b2, thus effect what may well be described as a shearing cut upon such material and more or less rapidly tear and reduce such material to the desired degree of neness for passing outwardly through the grate G, such reducing action being aided by the chamfered or oblique companion side faces 1, 9, of the blade.
It should be noted that, in the shredding unit of the machine A, the disks D are, of course, suitably spaced to accommodate the blades B and their diverging cutting arms b1 and b2, and preferably the blades B pivotally hung upon a particular rod R are staggered with relation to the blades B pivoted upon adjacent rods R, so that the arms b1 and b2 of'one set of blades B will traverse a zone correspondingly spaced from that traversed by adjacent blades, as will be well understood, for effecting the4 desired shredding action upon the material and efflciently increasing the output capacity of the particular machine. I might add that, by reason-y The blades B may be readily manufactured, conveniently installed in the particular machine, and are exceedingly efcient in the performance of their intended functions.
It should be understood that changes vand modifications in the forljn, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the blade may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without`departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A reversible shredding-machine blade cornprising a body-member generally of oblongrectangular contour with approximately flat opposite side faces for the major portion o f its area and longitudinally slotted for a selected distance from. one end and thereby provided with a pair of arms, said arms being oppositely offset for divergingly extending obliquely outwardly with respect to the main portion of the plane of the body-member, the body-member and one arm being continuously from a point disposed approximately midway of thebody-member-'fbetween its opposite end and offset line-of said arm obliquely chamfered 'alorig their outer side face and the body-member and the other arm being from said point oppositely obliquely chamfered also along their outer side face and the body-member and said arms being thereby provided with a pair of companion elongated outer marginal cutting edges extending in outwardly diverging oppositely disposed oblique relation to the body-member, said arms being oppositely chamfered obliquely upon their inner faces and thereby provided with inner marginal cutting edges also extending in diverging relation to the body-member and the edges of each of said pairs being disposed for rotation in difierent rotary planes, the chamfered inner and outer side faces of each respective arm being approximately parallel and each of said arms with their said chamfered inner and outer-faces having the cross-sectional form of 'a rhomboid THEODORE H.
