(C1. 10s-369)l My invention relates to means to anchor the .lading directly to the side wall framing of the car to prevent the lading from shifting,` which means is desirable for machinery or when only a partial load is in the car. Suchmeans also provides means to support beams extending crosswise of lthe car for an upper deck (spaced above the floor of the car) for a second tier of lading. Such upper decks are desirable to support the upper part of the lading independently of the lower v part of the lading to prevent the upper part from crushing the lower part, such, for instance, as'
oranges or potatoes and the like when shipped in bulk or light package stuff, such as breakfast foods. Automobile bodies are frequently transported in double deck arrangement. Unnished tractors may be loaded on the iloor of the car cause rot, breed germs or cause an undesirablel odor.

The 4drawings show my improved means for anchoring the lading and supporting a deck beam for double deckloading.- Each unit comprises a boxlike structure I as shown in Fig. 2, extending between and'secured to two vertical side wallposts 2. Several units are positioned on `Opposite sides of the car and on the same level to support a. deck at substantially that level,
and other groups of units may be used tosupy port decks at different' levels.
Each boxlike structure I is made of a pair of spaced brackets or members 4 (see Fig. 6) extending horizontally between and secured to the adjacent vertical posts 2. Each bracket 4 comprises ahorizontal flange 6 and a flange 8 at right angle thereto for attachment to the vertical posts 2, wi'th the horizontal flanges l6 extending between the right angle flanges to the outer surface I Il of the lining I2. `The U-shaped member I4 (see Fig. 9) extends between the horizontal anges 6 of the brackets 4' and is welded thereto to form a solid ve-sided boxlike struc- 'ture having the sixth side open tothe interior of the car through an aperture in the lining. The solid box prevents foreign matter which enters the box through the' aperture from getting between the sheathing I6 and the lining I2 of the car. The arms' I8 of theU-shaped member I4 also extend to the inner surface' Ill of the lining I2'. 'The facing member 20"(see Fig. 10) extends entirely around the boxlike structure to reinforce it and to provide a backing for the wooden lining I2. The facing member 20 is formedwith horizontal flangesY 22 which .are welded to the brackets 4 for mutual reinforcement. The lining`I2 is cut away to provide an aperture for access to the interior of the boxlike structure. A vertical rod or fiat bar 24 is positioned within the box structure, which extends between and is secured to the horizontal flanges i 6 of the brackets 4 to provide an anchorage for ,bled in the car structure.
A plurality of beams 26 are provided extending crosswise of the carto support an upper deck above the iioor of the car. As illustrated, each end of each beam is provided with a pair of T handed extensions or prongs 28 rigidly secured thereto, for instance by welded material as. shown at 2'I which, when the beam is in use, project'into the openings 25 of the boxlike structure on opposite sides of the vertical post 24 and are retained therein by the little projections 28 which are secured to the lower bracket 4. The beam 26 itself may be of any desired structure. The
distance between the ends of the beams 25 and A beam with the same function and of similar i structure as the beam 25 shown herein is disclosed and claimed inA my co-pending application for Patent No. 350,487 iiled August 3, 1940 and a division thereof No. 371,530, i'lled December 24, 1940.
Figs. 11-15 inclusive show a boxlike structure 40, comprising a piece of pipe 42 closed by the cap A4 at one end onlyywhich pipe is inserted through a bracket 45 and secured by welding or bycrirnping as shown at 6. The bar 43 is secured to the pipe adjacent the open end thereof. The ends of the bracket 45 are Asecured to adjacent post or some'other part of the wall structure with the open end of the pipe towardv :the interior of the car for the reception of the deck beam 50.
The end oi the deck beams in the modication comprises a tube 52 with a slot 5d in each end thereof which straddles the bars 48 in the boxlike structures in the opposite side walls. One side of each slot is provided with a lip 56 which prevents the easy removal of the deck beams 5J from the boxlike structures. A
The central portion of the deck beam 50 is preferably of rectangular'crosssections as shown in Fig.412 and is preferably provided with a wooden insert 58.

In a railway car having a wall comprising the lining, said device comprising a five-sided solid box structure having the sixth side open to the interior 'of the car through an aperture in the lining, a rod within said box structure and accessible through said aperture for temporary attachment of means for holding a lading in place,
said rod being positioned` within said box structure to provide an opening on each side thereof. a deck beam having spaced apart prongs adapted to enter said openings and be supported by said box structure, and means .to retain said Y prongswithin said openings.v
2. In a railway car having a wall comprising a f sheathing and a lining, in combination with an anchorage device supported bysaid wall and comprising a. solid .box-like structure entirely closed except for an opening therein accessible from the interior of the car through an aperture in said lining, whereby foreign matter passing through said aperture cannot get between said sheathing and said lining, a member secured to said device so as to be accessible from the interior of the car for anchoring a lading thereto by a steel tape or the like, said device being arranged to support one end of a deck beam, said device being provided with meansY to cooperate with said deck beam to prevent the horizontal disengagement oi said deck beam from said anchorage device.
3. In a railway car having a wall comprising posts, a sheathing and a lining in combination with an anchorage device supported by said posts and positioned between the sheathing and thev lining, said device comprising spaced apart horizontally disposed members extending between and secured to said posts, a U shaped piece extending between and secured to said members to form a five sided solid box structure with the sixth side thereof open to the interior of the car ihrough an aperture in said lining and a vertical bar accessible from the inside of the car through said aperture for anchoring a lading strap thereto, said bar being secured to said members and positioned between the arms of the AU shaped .iece so as to provide an opening on each side thereof, a deck beam having spaced apart prongs adapted to enter said openings and -be supported by said box structure, and means to retain said prongs within said openings.

In a railway car having a Wall comprising a sheathing and a lining, in combination with an anchorage device supported by said wall and comprising a solid box-like structure entirely closed except for an opening therein accessible from the interior of the car through an aperture yin-said lining, whereby foreign matter passing through said aperturecannot get between said sheathing and said lining, a member secured to 'said device so as to be accessible from the interior of the car for anchoring a lading `thereto by a steel tape or the like, said device being arranged to support one. end of a deck beam, and
means mounted partially on said device and partially'on said deck beam, whereby said beam can only be disengaged from said'device by upward and horimntal movements of the beam.
