SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,936, dated September 7, 1880.

Be it known that I,'WENDELIN SENG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in Folding Legs for Extension-Lounges, of which the following is a specification.

The object I have in view is to produce a for the extension-frames of bedlounges, having means for holding it in a vertical and in a horizontal position, which will be stronger and better than those heretofore used, and will not wear the clothcovering of the lounge; and my invention therein consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the parts composing my improved leg, as fully hereinafter explained, and pointed out by the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is an elevation of the leg in a vertical position, as it is when supporting the extension-frame of a lounge; Fig. 2, an elevation of the leg swung into a horizontal position; Fig. 3, an elevation of the lower edge of the leg when in the position Fig. 4 a central vertical section of the leg when in the position shown in Like letters denote corresponding parts in the several figures. y A is the leg proper, made of cast metal of any suitable shape andof the required length. This log has a slot, a, at its upper end, running length-wise of the leg a short distance, through which slot the headed bolt b passes, which secures the legto the fastening-plate B.

The leg A is formed near its upper end with shoulders c c, and above these shoulders with a point, d, the under side of which point is curved outwardly, as shown at d, for a purpose that will be presently explained.

The fastening-plateB is also cast from metal,

. and has side extensions which receive screws for securing the plate to the side rail of the extension-frame of a bed-lounge. This plate has two lugs, e e, cast therewith, which receive'between them the point d of the leg and rest, when the leg is supporting the loungeframe, on the shoulders c 0.

The upper arm of the fastening-plate is made somewhat thicker than the rest of the plate, and between the outwardly, as shown at f, to correspond with the curve of the pointd of the leg and to hold the leg steady when in a vertical position; On one of its side arms the fiistening-plateis provided with another lug, g, upon which the leg rests when swung up into a horizontal position. 7

Two of these logs are secured, as usual, to the side rail of the extension-frame of a bedlounge, one near each end thereof. When the lounge is extended and the extension-frame is supported by the folding legs each leg will be in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4.

To close the lounge, the extension-frame is lifted a short distance, which causes each leg to drop and withdraw its point d from between the lugs c c. vThe leg is then swung up and caught over the lug g, the curved end of the'leg permitting a rocking movement on the fastening-plate. The leg is held in a horizontal position between the'lug g and the lug e.

In opening the lounge, the legs are moved off of the lugs g, and drop by their own weight into a vertical position ready to lock with the lugs, e 0 when they are pushed up between them by striking the floor.

As seen in Fig. 4, the legs do not rubagainst thecovering of the lounge-rail.

- What I claim as my invention is- The .folding leg for extension-lounges described, consisting of the fastening-plate B, having bolt b, lugs c, c, and g, and curved face and point d, with curved rear side d, substantially as describedand shown.
