To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HOLLIDAY,

' of Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shelves or Slides for Stove- Ovens, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to cooking stoves and ranges, either large or small, in which ovens are used for baking purposes; and its object is to provide a ready and convenient means of placing into and withdrawin g from the oven articles to be baked without the necessity of handling the same, and thereby obviating the discomfort and the liability of burning some portion of the person of the cook attendant upon the common mode of directly handling the utensils while being introduced into or withdrawn from the oven, or inspecting the same while in the oven and during the process of baking.

One feature of myinvention relates to the combination of a pivotpin with an oven-shelf and the stove and it consists, in general, in a novel construction of the pivot-pin and that portion of the stove which receives the pin, whereby the shelf may, when desired, be quickly attached to or detached from the stove, and yet, when attached, will allow the shelf to he slid in and out of the oven, and at the same time prevent the shelf from being upset.

Another feature of my invention consists in a device whereby the door may be connected or disconnected from the shelf at pleasure, and the operator thereby be enabled to operate at will the shelf, either by the door or independently thereof.

Another advantage of this feature of my invention is that the shelf can be left undisturbed in the oven while the oven-door is opened or shut.

Figure 1 of the drawings is aperspective View of one' side of an ordinary cooking-stove, the oven-door of which is shown partly open, and the shelf in position, partly withdrawn from the oven. Fig. 2 represents the pivotpin of the shelf and the openin gin the bottom of the oven for its reception. Fig. 3 represents an adjustable catch, which is attached to the oven-door, by which the shelf is withdrawn heat to pass through without obstruction to 6b the article being baked. The shelf is provided at b with a pivot-pin, by which said plate is connected with the bottom plate of the oven. Some suitable device is preferably employed to prevent, when the shelf is in position, the 6 pin from being withdrawn from the hole in which it is to turn. For this purpose, in the present instance, this pivot-pin is made L- shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the pin has been placed in the hole 0 in the bottom plate, D, of the oven, the point I) of the pin fits under the projecting edge of the hole, thus holding the shelf in position as regards the bottom plate of the oven, and not allowing it to be lifted from the oven without first elevating its outer edge. This opening or hole 0 is located in the oven'bottom and near the rear corner of the latter, directly beneath that corner of the stove-shelf which in Fig. lis marked m. under side of the bottom oven-plate, is a cup or pocket, f, which, catching any liquids, as gravies, &c., which may happen to reach the oven-bottom and run through hole 0, prevents the same from running down onto thefloor or platform on which the stove stands. This shelf (3 is provided with the slots (1, in which the point of the catch 61 moves when the shelf is being withdrawn from or returned to the oven by the opening or shutting of the door. preferably employ two of these slots d, situated at opposite corners of the shelf, as shown in Fig. 1, thus enabling me to use the shelf at either side of the oven. or studs, as at e, the purpose of either of which is to prevent the shelf from slipping from under the article being baked, and thus leaving it in the oven when the shelf is withdrawn.

The operation of my invention is very sim- 10o Beneath the hole 0, and connected to the 80 ple, and will be readily understood from the foregoing description, which operation is as follows: The pivot-pin I) being placed in the hole 0 in the bottom plate of the oven the shelf or slide 0 is pushed into the oven, and the door closed. If it is now desired to with draw the shelf 0 from the oven, the catch (1 is turned, by means of a handle or knob, d on the outside of the door, so that its point rises into the slot d in the side of the shelf, as shown in Fig. 1, when, the door being opened, the shelf is withdrawn from the oven by being turned on the pivot-pin. \Vhen the shelf is thus drawn out one corner rests on the catch (1, and the side opposite this corner rests on the front edge of the bottom oven-plate, thus having a firm support to permit the operator to place any article to be baked on said shelf preparatory to placing in the oven. The article to be baked being placed on the shelf, the door is closed, and with it the shelf and contents are pushed into the oven.

When it is desired to look into the oven without withdrawing the shelf it can be done by turning the catch 01 so that its point is disengaged from the slot (1, when the door can be opened without disturbing the shelf.

While I prefer the device herein described for withdrawing the shelf, some other device may be used, in connection with the door, to accomplish this purpose, and still fall within the scope of my invention.

The several features of my invention are, independently, of value and use.

\Vhat I claim as new and of my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sliding oven-shelf provided with pivotpin 1), in combination with the bottom ovenplate of a stove provided with hole 0 and pocket f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A sliding oven-shelf provided with pivotpin 1), having point I) projecting at an angle to the length of said pin 1), in combination with the oven-bottom provided with opening 0.

3. A sliding oven-shelf provided with pivotpin I), having point I) projecting at an angle to the length of said pin b, in combination with the bottom oven-plate of a stove provided with hole 0 and pocket f, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

10. A slidingoven-shelf provided with pivotpin 1), having point 1), arranged in reference to pin b substantially as described, and with slot d, in combination with an oven provided with opening 0 and cup f, and oven-door provided with latch 61, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

11. A sliding stoveshelf provided with slot or opening d, in combination with a suitable latch for engaging in said slot, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
