Description
w G. B. STEPHEN-SON. Method of Waxing Warps in Weaving.
No. 231,862. Patented Aug. 31, 18 80 N. PETERS, PHDTOLITHOGRAPHERI WASHSNGTDN D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. STEPHENSON OF BRADFORD, GREAT BRITAIN.
METHOD OF WAXING WARPS IN WEAVING.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 231,862, dated August 31, 1880.
I Application filed January 30, 1880. Patented in England December 4, 1867.
To all whom it'may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE BALME STE- PHENSON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Bradford, in the county of York, in the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WV-axing Warps in Weaving, (for which British Letters Patent No. 3,447, dated December at, 1867, were granted to myself, Thomas Stephenson, and Benjamin Stephensom) of which the following is a specification.
It is well known that in the process of weaving it is customary for the attendant to wax the threads of the warp manually, the object of waxing being to smooth and strengthen tender warps and to lay any loose fibers. The fact of the process being manual will at once show that it is objectionable. To obviate this defect I employ a roller made of wax, of any convenientdiameter, and of sufficient breadth to cross the loom-beam. This roller I place in the back part of the loom in such a position horizontally that all the threads of the warp pass over it, and consequently are uniformly waxed.
The position I prefer to place the rod in is to rest upon the warp as it unfolds from the beam, and thus by its own gravity to effect the desired result.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated a vertical section of sufficient of a loom to illustrate my invention, A- being the side frame of the loom, in which is mounted the usual beam B, carrying the warp-threads G O. The warps G, as they are drawn 01f this beam, pass up over the roller D, and thence through the usual reed and heddles to the front of the loom. In the angle formed by the warps O as they leave the beam and the warps wrapped round the beam I lay the wax rod E, so that the Weight of this rod, resting on the warps in the position described, waxes these warps as they are drawn from the beam, and thus smooths and lays the loose fibers and strengthens the threads.
I claim as my invention- The method herein described of waxing warp-threads in looms during the process of weaving, to wit: by causing the said threads to come in contact while being drawn from the u arp-beam with a rod of Wax interposed between the said threads and the warp-beam, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE BALME STEPHENSON.
Witnesses WILLIAM JAMES WAUGH, A. L. CROFT.
