UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. DRAPER, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO DRAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE AND PORTLAND, MAINE.
LOOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,667, dated April 9, 1901.
Application led November 2, 1900. Serial No. 35,248. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DRAPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.
In looms provided with warp-stop-motion mechanism it not infrequently happens that when a thread breaks it tangles up with the other intact threads, particularly when thev shed changes, making a kind of cross-tie, which serves to hold taut the broken thread, so that its detector will not operate and the action of the stop-motion will not be affected.
My presentinvention has for its object the ,production of means for preventing such tangling or holding of a broken warp-thread, so that when it breaks its detector will operate properly to eifect the actuation of the stop-motion mechanism.
The drawing illustrates a transverse sectional view of a portion of a loom with one embodiment of my invention applied thereto.
The loom-frame A, lay A3, reciprocating harnesses H H', and the lease-rods L L may be of any usual or well-known construction, and I have herein shown a portion of a warpstop-motion mecha nism-viz.,vertically-movable detectors d, through which the threads pass, two series or banks of detectors being illustrated, and coperating feelers f, normally vibrated by any suitable means, (not shown)-such, for instance, as illustrated in United States Patent No. 645,912, dated March 20, 190D-it being understood that when a warp-thread breaks its detectorol drops and by engagement with its feeler operates to eifect the stoppage of the loom. Now it sometimes happens that when a thread breaks it will become tangled with and held by some of its fellows, particularly when the shed is changed, so that its detector cannot move into operative position and theloom will not be stopped. To prevent this, I interpose a clearer, shown as a rod c, extended transversely between the planes of the shed, back of the harnesses and independent of the leasing devices, this rod being mounted at its ends on upright arms c', one of which is shown A branch c3 on one of the arms is shown as provided with a roll c4, which travels on a cam CX, which may be mounted on the usual camshaft C of the loom. A springs, attached at one end to the arm and at its other end to the frame A, tends to pull the clearer back, while the cam, rotating in the direction of arrow 5, moves it in the-opposite direction. The cam is so constructed that when the back harness, as H, descends the clearer will move back toward the lease-rods, as herein shown, the threads in the planes of the shed crossing in front of the clearei'. When the back harness rises, the clearer c is moved `forward and it clears or combs out any broken thread which may have become tangled with the intact threads, so that such thread is left slack, and its detector can then move into operative position, the stop-motion mechanism operates, and the loom is stopped.
The'tangling of a broken thread hereinbefore referred to usually is eected with threads of the other shed, so it will be manifest that the clearer will clear or loosen such a cross-tie or tangle whenever it occurs,
Various changes or modifications may be made in the apparatus herein shown without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In aloom, the harnesses, leasing devices, and an independent vibrating clearer transversely extended between the planes of the shed intermediate the harnesses and leasing devices, to prevent catching or tangling of a broken warp-thread with its fellows.
2. In a loom, the harnesses, leasing devices, an independent clearer-rod transversely extended between the planes of the shed intermediate the leasing devices and harnesses,
WILLIAM F. DRAPER.
