SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,814, dated August 31, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FLORENZ KEIsER, of

Pottstown, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Axle-Boxes, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of axle-boxes in which the lid or a tongue on the lid engages with a projection on the box, the lid being pivoted to the box by a slotted pivotal connection, so as to permit the direct elevation as well as the swinging of said lid.

The object of myinvention is to so construct the lid that the body of the box and the pivotlugs on the latter will be protected from injury-an object which attain in the manner hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved axle box, showing the lid closed; Fig. 2, the same with the lid partly opened 5 Fig. 3, a view showing the lid fully opened, and Fig.4 a plan view of the box.

A is the casing of the box, and B the lid, the latter having at each end projecting cheekpieces a, to elongated slots 1) in which are adapted the opposite projecting ends of apin, (I, carried by lugs c on the top of the box, one end of the pin having an enlarged head, and the other end being slotted and furnished with a key, whereby said pin is retained in its proper position.

The lower edge of the lid B, when said lid is closed, bears against the upper edge of a projection, g, forming part of the ca'sin g A of the box, and forms a tight joint therewith, a projecting tongue, '5, on the lid engaging with said projection g, and serving to lock the lid in place. (See Fig. 1.)

When it is desired to gain access to the interior of the box the lid B is first raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the finger i is free from the control of the projection g of the box, the slots 11 in the cheek-pieces a permitting such elevation of the lid, which can, when thus elevated, be swung outward and upward, as shown by the arrow, the projecting ends of the pin d serving as pivots on which the lid swings.

The lid is moved tothe position shown in Fig. 3, and is self-retaining in this position, the lid being inverted and resting in a recess in the top of the box; or it may rest directly on the top of the box, the recess not being essential.

On the inner side of the lid B, near the upper end of the same, is formed alip, m, which, when the lid is closed, bears against a projection, a, on the casing A, and thereby prevents the access of dust and dirt to the interior of the box at this point.

A hollow projection, m, on the outside of the lid, serves as a handle, by which the manipulation of said lid can be readily effected.

By my invention 1. am enabled to effect the locking of the lid in its closed position by the engagement of a fixed tongue on the lid with the casing of the box, thereby dispensing with the use of the spring pins or catches necessary in that class of boxes in which the lid is simply pivoted to the casing.

The cheek-pieces a a on the lid serve as a protection to the box and its lugs e, the breaking of the cheek-pieces merely necessitating the application of a new lid to the box-an operation which can readily be performed.

Instead of using a pin, d, extending entirely across the box A, the lugs e 0 may be provided with projecting pins or bolts, adaptedto the slots b; or in some cases the pins or bolts may be carried by the cheek-pieces a, and the lugs 0 may have slots b formed in them. The arrangement shown, however, is preferred, as it is the simplest and cheapest.

I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of the casing A of the box, having a projection, g, with the lid B, having a tongue adapted to said projection, and having cheek-pieces a a, which overlap the sides of the box and serve to connect the lid thereto, the pivotal connection between the lid and box being slotted, so as to permit the direct elevation of the lid as well as the swinging of the same, as set forth.
