4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvement in scrapers and is particularly adapted for scraping the bottoms of ships, decks, floors and other surfaces.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a scraper which embodies a blade and a holder involving clamp means whereby the blade can be quickly removed, thus saving considerable time, especially desirable on jobs where completion of work is urgent.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a scraping implement which is so constructed as to permit ease of operation and sturdiness in construction to the promotion of durability.
Other obj ects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the follow ing description.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 generally refers to one form of scraper tool, this including by general reference a body structure generally referred to by numeral t, a handle 1 and a scraper blade 8.
The body 6 is divided into upper and lower elongated sections 9, H), the outer surfaces of which are rounded off While the opposed sides are flat.

The opposed surfaces of the sections 9 and 19' have rearwardly deepening grooves ll therein, the forward ends of which merge with recesses l2 in which the ends of a link member 13 are disposed. The ends of the link member 13 are equipped with eyes 14 and bolts l5 extend through the sections 9, I9 and through these eyes to pivotally connect the link member 13 to the sections. Thus the sections 9, l9 are loosely connected together.
The nose or forward end portion of the section 9 is cut away as at 16 to accommodate a clamp block H, the forward edge portion of which slopes as at 18 and isformed outwardly to define a beak-like rib I9.

Between the block [1 and plate 20 a blade 8, is held, the rounded intermediate portion 1) being held betweenthe outer rounded off edge of the clamp plate 20 and the beak-like ridge [.9 of the clamp'plate ll. As can be seen in Figure 6, the blade 8 is of angle construction and each longitudinal edge is sharpened to provide a cutting edge e. The curved intermediate portion of the blade'may be formed with recesses or openings 25 to receive teats or ribs on the beak-like-formation 19 (not shown) r Another form of blade is shown in Figure 10 and is generally referred to by reference character 8a, this blade being of angular construction and havin somewhat arcuate shaped cut-1 ting edge portions d.
A third form of cutting blade is shown in Figure 14 and generally referred to by reference character 82), this blade being of angular construction and'having formed at its intermediate portion a longitudinally. extending corrugation e, which will afford a somewhat spring action of the cutting edge portions of the blade when the tool is in use. It is preferable that this blade be used with the form'of the invention shown in Figure 12, as the clamp block must necessarily be formed to accommodate the same.
Now returning to Figure 1, it can be seen that the butt ends of the sections 9, [9 are disposed into a cap 25 from which depends a hand grip 21. The butt ends of the sections 9, it are disposed above and below a stud 21 which fits into the rear end portions of the grooves l l l l Numeral 28 denotes an elongated rod on which a wedge member of circular cross section and generally referred to by numeral 9 is slidable. The rear end of this rod is threaded as at 30 while its other end is provided with an eye 3| receiving the link member l3 as clearly suggested in Figures 1 and 9.
As seen in Figure 1 and also clearly in Figure 4, the rod 28 extends through the stud 21 and back wardly beyond the cap 26 while it is equipped with a knurled nut 32, which when screwed inwardli on the threaded portion 36 of the rod 28 will reduce the distance between the link member I3 and the stud 21, the stud abutting the wedge member 29 to the end that the wedge member forces the rear end portions of the sections 9, I apart rocking the sections so that the clamp block I! and clamp plate take a positive grip on the blade 8.
A somewhat modified form of the invention is shown in Figure 12 wherein similar shaped body sections 9a, I 0a are connected together by similar link means I 3a. In this form of the invention a clamp block Ila has its beak portion l 9a formed with a somewhat deeper undercut to accommodate the corrugation e of the type of blade denoted by reference character 8b. Furthermore, a clamp plate 20 employed with this form of the invention has its upstanding portion 28a also formed to accommodate the inside of the blade 8b.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 12, instead of having the cap 26 and depending hand grip 21, this form of the invention has a wedge member 29a slidable on the rod 28a, this rod 28a being threaded as at 30a. A handle 21a has a longitudinal threaded bore in one end thereof for receiving the threaded portion 36a of the rod 28a. Obviously, by holding the body 9a, [6a and rotating the handle 21a, the wedge 29a will be forced inwardly, swinging the inner ends of the body sections 9a, Illa outwardly and adjustably clamping the blade 8b in place.
A third form of the invention is shown in Figure 13, and this embraces a blade structure made up of upper and lower body sections 9b, l 012. Numeral 2Tb denotes a conveniently shaped handle and through the upper portion of this handle and extending through the sections 9b, Illb is a bolt I32) equipped with a nut I 5?) at its upper end which when tightened in place holds the clamping ends of the sections 9b, Hlb against a blade 8. This form of tool is lighter and more inexpensive than the other two forms and has a light clamping block I'lb similar in shape to the block l1 and opposed to a straight clamp plate 200 which is secured to an oblique surface of the forward end of the body section I (lb. It can be seen that the clamp end of the body sections 912, Mb are further secured together by a bolt which extends through the lower portion of the plate 280 and obliquely backwardly where at the top of the section 9b it is equipped with a nut 36.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
, 1. A holder for a scraper blade comprising a pair of elongated body members opposed side by side, means pivotally connecting said members together adjacent one end thereof for relative rocking movement to move said ends toward each other and comprising a link extending transversely between the members and pivoted to each, a pair of clamping elements between said ends of the members fixed thereto for cooperation under movement of said ends toward each other to grip a scraper blade therebetween, and means to separate the other ends of said members to cause said first ends to move toward each other comprising a rod pivoted at one end to said link for compensating movement between the members, a wedge slidable on said rod between said other ends of said members, and means to slide said wedge.
2. A holder for a scraper blade comprising a pair of elongated body members opposed side by side, means pivotally connecting said members together adjacent one end thereof for relative rocking movement to move said ends toward each other and comprising a link extending transversely between the members and pivoted to each, a pair of clamping elements between said ends of the members fixed thereto for cooperation under movement of said ends toward each other to grip a scraper blade therebetween, and means to separate the other ends of said members to cause said first ends to move toward each other comprising a rod pivoted at one end to said link for compensating movement between the members, a wedge slidable on said rod between said other ends of said members, and means to slide said wedge, said clamping element embodying clamping faces oblique to the longitudinal axis of the holder.

A holder for a scraper blade comprising a pair of elongated body members opposed side by side, means pivotally connecting said members together adjacent one end thereof for relative rocking movement to move said ends toward each other and comprising a link extending transversely between the members and pivoted to each, a pair of clamping elements between said ends of the members fixed thereto for cooperation under movement of said ends toward each other to grip a scraper blade therebetween, and means to separate the other ends of said members to cause said first ends to move toward each other comprising a rod pivoted at one end to said link for compensating movement between the members, a wedge slidable on said rod between said other ends of said members, and means to slide said wedge, said clamping element embodying clamping face oblique to the longitudinal axis of the holder, and one of said elements having a face lip overhanging the other element.
4. A holder for a scraper blade comprising a pair of elongated body members opposed side by side, means connecting said members together for relative rocking movement to move the ends of the members at one end of the holder toward each other, and a pair of clamping elements on said ends, respectively, for cooperative clamping action under such movement of said ends to grip a blade therebetween, said elements having clamping faces oblique to the longitudinal axis of the holder, one of said elements being a plate, and the other element having a face lip overhanging an edge of the plate.
