April 20, 1943. A. SMITH QUICK RELEASE GUN HOLDER Filed May '7, 1941 Il u 2 d M Ov Y 143i 22 .HP v, o 2 l 1 H m W m Patented Apr. 20, 1943 UNiTED STATES PATENT orrlce QUICK RELEASE GUN HOLDER Arvid Smith, Los Angeles, Calif. Application May 7, 1941, Serial` No. 392,399
`1 Claim.
My invention relates to a quick release gun holder, and more particularly to a device designed for holding a policemans gun in an automobile, in a convenient position, and in a manner which makes it possible to quickly release it and pick it up for action without delay or accident.
Among the salient objects of my invention are: to provide such a gun holder which can be readily secured in place in an automobile or other place desired, and which will safely hold a gun in position to be out of the way and at the same time to be readily released and picked up for use by the omcer or other person who is to use it; to provide such a gun holder which can be latched against accidental displacement or removal until the latch has been moved, whereby the lever for releasing the gun can be conveniently thrown to open position; to provide in such a gun holder means whereby it can be locked against removal by unauthorized persons until the lock has been removed; and, in general, to provide a simple, practical, and eicient gun holder which can be secured in the front of an automobile, or othel place, for quick release when needed for use.
In order to explain my invention, I have shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, one practical embodiment thereof, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun in position in said holder, a part of the barrel being broken away to reduce the size of the View;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the gun holder and attaching means;
Figure 3 is a front view thereof;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4, of Fig. 3;
Figure 5 is a similar view showing the holder in open position;
Figure 6 is a sectional Fig. 3;
Figure '7 is a similar View, showing the holder in open position; and
Figure 8 is a sectional View taken on the line 8 8 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, my invention as here shown for descriptive purposes includes two body members I 9 and lI, hingedly connected at I2, I2, the member Iii being provided with a handle I3, by means of which it can be moved. The member II is shown secured to, or provided with a bracket member I4, by means of which it can be attached to the front of the dash, or other part of an automobile, said support being designated I5 in Fig. 1.
Each of said members has formed as a part View on line 6 6 of thereof, a holding jaw, as I0 and II', adapted to clamp around the barrel of a gun, designated G. On the floor of the automobile, I have shown a cup member I6, adapted to receive the butt of the gun, as seen in Fig. 1.
The body member I I, in jaw I I has an extension, bottom, extended toward the member I, and to which said member I0 is hingedly attached. This extension is seen in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 8. The member I0 has two shorter, corresponding extensions, as I8, I8, which overlap said extensions i?, Il, to receive the hinge pins or bolts, I2, I2.
Pivotally mounted on top oi the upper, long extension I1, of the` body member II, is a latch element I9, pivoted at 20, and having a shoulder I 9 adapted to engage a shoulder I8 on the extension I8, whereby to prevent said body member I from being opened to the position shown in Fig. 5, until said latch member I9 has been swung to the position shown in said Fig. 5. A spring 2l is attached at one end to a pin at 22 on the underside of the top of the member I I, and at its other end it is attached to the latch I9, as at 23, whereby to serve as a quick acting means for moving said latch to open or closed positions. Said latch member I9 is also provided with a hole 24, which registers with another hole in the member II, as 25, whereby a small padlock can be used to lock said latch in closed, holding position, when it is desired to lock the device against manipulation.
The two body members I0 and I I, are also connected together with a coiled spring 2t, one end of which is attached to a lug 27, formed on the member I I, as seen in Figs. 6 and 7, and the other end of which is attached to a lug 28, formed on the member I 0, said spring being so positioned that when the holder is closed, the spring is at one side of the pivot I2, and when said holder is open, as in Fig. 7, said spring is at the other side of the pivot I2, operating to hold the device open, or to hold it closed, in a manner understood.
It will thus be seen that when the handle I 3 is moved to the open position, said spring 26 operates to facilitate the movement to said open position, and when moved or started toward the closed position, said spring 26 operates to facilitate the movement tosaid closed position. This is true also of the latch element I9, when it is moved to unlatch the holder so it can be opened and the gun removed. Said latch element I9 has a downwardly depending portion I9 by means of which said latch element can be quickly swung to open position by the hand which grasps the handle I 3 to open the holder to release the gun. In other addition to the holding as I1, I'I, at its top and words, as the hand grasps the handle I3 to open the holder, the thumb is in position to open the latch in the same movement, thus quickly releasing the holder and permitting the gun to be lifted to position for use quickly and conveniently.
I am aware that changes in the details of construction and arrangement can be made in the device as here shown for descriptive purposes Without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the details here shown, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claim.
I claim:
A gun holder including two semi-tubular jaw members to be closed together, each having a channel-like body portion at one side, said body portions being pivotally connected at their topsand bottoms, a handle rigid with one of said body portions for manually moving said jaw member to open position, a supporting bracket on the other body portion, a spring connected at one end to one of said jaw members and at its other end connected with body portion of said other jaw member, between the top and bottom pivotal connections, and positioned to move across the line of the pivots of said body portions, whereby to yieldingly hold said jaw members in open or closed position when moved by said handle, and a latch means pivotally mounted on top of one body portion and extended across and into engagement with the other body portion for holding said jaw members in closed, holding position, and spring means operating to move said latch means into holding position in engagement with the movable body portion having the handle.
ARVID SMITH.
