F. w. M KEE 2,427,801 CLEAT FOR HOLDING THE EL RIC coma ON THE HANDLE OF AN ELECTRIC RPET SWEEPER Filed July 4, 1945 Awavmf? Patented Sept. 23, 1947 CLEAT FOR HOLDING THE ELECTRIC CORD ON THE HANDLE OF AN ELECTRIC CAR- PET SWEEPER Floyd W. McKee, Salem, Ohio Application July 4, 1945, Serial No. 603,128
2 Claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel cleat to hold the electric cord on the handle of an electric carpet sweeper while permitting of quickly releasing it when the carpet sweeper is in use. I attain the objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device applied to a carpet sweeper, its normal position being shown in full lines and its released position being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a front plan view of the invention, the electric cord of the sweeper being indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a section through the handle of the carpet sweeper in a plane above the slidable ring but with a portion of the ring broken away to show the screw which guides it; and
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the pivoted upper cleat.
Like numerals indicate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a conventional vacuum swleeper handle I, having the usual lower cleat 2 fastened by rivets 3. I have devised :a novel upper cleat 4 having a bottom portion 5 and inner member 6. At the junction of the inner member 6 and the bottom portion 5 there is pivoted a hinge ele ment 7 which is secured to the handle I by the hinge retaining element 8.
Mounted on the handle I of the carpet sweeper is a slidable ring 9 adapted to engage over the inner member 6 of the pivoted cleat 4.
To permit of convenient operation of the ring 9 it has a sliding off-set portion l0 to engage over the inner portion 6 of the cleat, as shown in Fig. 3. The ring 9 preferably is provided with a slot l3 to receive a pin or screw I2 which guides the ring in its sliding movement.
The electric cord I4 is wound around the two cleats in any convenient or usual way when the carpet sweeper is not in use. When it is desired to use the carpet sweeper, the cord may be quickly released by moving the sliding ring 9 upward and out of engagement with the inner cleat member 0, thereby permitting the cleat 4 to swing to the out-turned position shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It is within the contemplation of my invention 2 to provide any suitable equivalent means in place of the ring 9 for holding the cleat in place on the handle.
The device is applicable to any machine with a long electric cord carried on the handle of the machine, such as a sanding machine, waxing machine or the like.
What I claim is:
l. A cleat for holding the electric cord on the handle of an electric carpet sweeper, comprising a U-shaped cleat, a pivot element on said cleat, a cooperating pivot member secured to the handle of the carpet sweeper and engaging the pivot element of the cleat, and a ring slidably mounted on the handle of the carpet sweeper and adapted to releasably engage the inner member of the cleat to normally hold the same in position for fastening the electric cord to it, but permitting of release of the cleat member to release the electric cord.
2. A cleat for holding the electric cord on the handle of an electric carpet sweeper, comprising a U-shaped cleat, a pivot element on said cleat, a cooperating pivot member secured to the handle of the carpet sweeper and engaging the pivot element of the cleat, and a ring slidably mounted on the handle of the carpet sweeper and adapted to releasably engage the inner member of the cleat to normally hold the same in position for fastening the electric cord to it, but permitting of release of the cleat member to release the electric cord, the ring having an off-set portion to engage over the inner member of the cleat, and means for holding the ring against turning during its sliding movement to release or fasten the inner member of the cleat.
