Description
J. A. TILL EAST S and Band for iag e Axlesf No. 231,691. Patented Aug. 31,1880.-
FIG. I.
WITNESSES. INVENTUR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. TILLINGHAST, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SAN D-BAND FOR CARRIAGE -AXLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,691, dated August 31, 1880.
Application filed April 24, 1879.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. TILLINGHAST, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Spindle- Protectors for Carriage-Axles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates tothat class of spindle-protectors which are made in two parts for the purpose of convenient attachment to the axle; and itconsists in aprotectordivided into two cup-shaped segments, which are secured to each other when placed on the axle by means of fixed screw-studs and nuts.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a view showing the face of the protector.
In the drawings, A represents the axle, with spindle B and the usual collar a at the inner end of the spindle. G is the ordinary hub, with axle-box D D, and E E are the metal bands surrounding the end of the hub.
The protector is constructed in the follow ing manner: G and H are two cup-shaped segmental pieces, made to fit close and tight around the axle A, back ofthe collar to. The
nuts F F upon the studs I I, cast upon the lower portion of the upper segment, Gr, serve to hold the two parts together securely, the
studs I I entering corresponding holes J J cast or drilled in the segment H, which is also provided with an arm, K, made flat, so as to fasten under the clip-yoke L.
Then in its place the forward rim of the protector enters an annular recess, 0, cut in the inner end of the hub (l, around the end of the axle-box D, of such depth as to admit about one-fourth of an inch of said rim of the protector.
I claim as my invention- 1. In an axlespindle protector, the combination of the cup-shaped segment G, provided with the fixed screw-studs I I, with the cupshaped segment H, provided with the arm K, for securing the protector to the axle, substantially as described.
2. The cup shaped segments Gr and H, joined by means of the fixed screw-studs I I, attached to the segment G, in combination with the hub 0, provided with an annular recess, c, spindle B, and collar a, substantially as described.
JOHN A. TILL'INGHAST.
Witnesses SOCRATES SCHOLFIELD, HARMON S. BABCOCK.
