(ci. 20c- Mr 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improved perforated pie band and has, for one of its principal objects, means for retaining a transparent covering over a pie when the pie is in position on a paper plate or the like.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of means for providing a substantial container for packaged pie so that the same can be handled and shipped with considerar-ble ease and with far less danger of breakage or damage than when not incased in the packaging band of this invention.
'I'he present invention represents improvements in pie bands over and above my prior patents on similar devices numbered 2,068,540 dated January 19, 1937, and 2,133,607 dated October 18, 1938.
Another specific object of Vmy invention is to provide a band for pie `packages or the like which shall be very economically and simply manufactured and which also will be easily applied while, at the same time, adequately maintaining itself in position after application.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawing and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, is shown in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pie positioned on a plate coyered with a transparent sheet and inclosed in this assemblage by means of the improved perforated pie band of my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing details of the assembled construction.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the improved perforated pie band of my invention, showing the same in strip form and portions broken away.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail view showing more completely the gripping action of my perforated band on the transparent sheet covering for a pie plate applied in accordance with my in- Venticin.
As shown in the drawing:
The reference numeral I0 indicates generally the improved perforated pie band of my invention, and this consists essentially of a strip of cardboard or the like of suitable strength and resiliency.
The strip of cardboard is provided with sets of series of longitudinal perforations as indicated at I2 and with other sets of series of transverse perforations as indicated at I4. These perforations preferably take the shape of round openings as illustrated but may be of different shapes and sizes as desired and may be spaced in relationships other than those shown.
The strip l0 is adapted to be joined into a circular hoop by overlapping and fastening at I6, and these circular hoops can be of different sizes so as to conveniently encircle pie plates of different sizes.
The pie plate is best illustrated at I8 in Figure 2 and is of conventional form, a pie 20 being represented therein. The pie is preliminarily covered with a transparent sheet 22 of regenerated cellulose or some other similar material, and this sheet need not be transparent.
The band I0 of this invention is then applied to the asembled plate I8, pie 20 and sheet 22 by pushing the same downwardly about the edges of the pie plate whereupon the band will iiex at the points indicated by the transverse openings I4, assuming a hexagonal, octagonal or other shape, depending upon the number of such series of perforations I4.
When the edge of the pie plate I8 comes into alignment with a series of longitudinal openings I2, these will be either almost or completely broken through as indicated at 24 in Figures 2 and 5, thereby gripping the edge of the plate with the assembled sheet 22 and holding the sheet in desired position in a very satisfactory manner.
This gripping action is considerably superior to the action of the slots shown in my prior Patent No. 2,133,607 and the band itself is more economical than the similarly acting band disclosed in my prior Patent No. 2,068,540.
The advantages of this band will be apparent to anyone familiar with this art, and the irnprovements over prior devices will also be immediately evident.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a Wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
A band for encircling pie plates and retaining cover sheets thereon, said band comprising a strip of material having its ends joined, a series of transverse perforatons in the band at spaced intervals therearound and another series of longitudinal perforations formed in the band at spaced intervals and between the transverse perforations, the longitudinal perforations being positioned medially of the bland and for the purpose of gripping the sheet in position about the edges of the pie plate when the band is positioned around said plate, certain of said longitudinal perforations breaking into each other and thereby forming gripping elements for the pie plate edge and its associated sheet, the longitudinal perforations being larger than the transverse ones.
WILLIAM EHRLICH.
