f1 f AThis invention relates to :packages of` adhesive bandagesorthe like. J s 'l `In the drawing:` l
la Figure lfriis aplan view of a package embodying f form of a ilat rectangular envelope holding a number of individual adhesive bandages disposed side by side' in a row. In the package shown,
' spaces are provided for six such bandages, which are identified by the reference letters A to F inclusive in the drawing.
Each adhesive bandage in itself is of the iamiliar type, comprising a strip of adhesive tape I (Figures 2, 3v and 3+A) the adhesive side of which carries a central gauze pad 2, the exposed adhesiveand the gauze pad being protected by overlapping pieces of crinoline 3 and 4. The adhesive bandage is enclosed in an individual wrapper 5 of glassine paper or the like, which is sealed longitudinally. rby adhesive 6. The ends of each wrapper 5 may also be sealed individually but this is unnecessary in the package of the inven-v tion, the closure thereof being otherwise provided for, as later described. y
The envelope comprises rectangular bottom and top sheets of paper, I0 and II respectively, the upper sheet II being perforated centrally alongv the line I2 (Figure 1)' to permit tearing open the package so that theupper sheets unfolds into two halves I3 and I4 (Figure 2), providing access to the interior. The vbottom and top layers of the envelope are sealed together by adhesive I9 running all along lthe edges of the package and underlying the crimped or compressed areas 20, 2|, 22, 23 adjacent the four edges. `The adhesive along the side edgesl 20 and 2| of the package also enters into the otherwise open ends of the bandage packages A to F inclusive, closing and sealing the same.
`In Figure 2, packages A, B 'and E are indicated Packages C and D are indicated as having already been removed and adhesive spots 25 by which the variouspackages are fastened onto the bottom layer I0 of the lolaims. lomos- 56) envelope are thus exposed. The package FV is indicated as having its wrapper 5 partially torn away so as to expose the crinoline 3 and l. The
packages A to F are spaced as close together as conveniently possible but eXtra-space is provided between the end packages A and F and the ends of the envelope to provide space for the adheto the sheet Hl, which may at this time be in the form of a web, by the adhesive spots 25. The gluev i9 around the areas 20, 2l, 22 and 23 may be simultaneously, previously or later applied to either or both of they elements m and Il. Application of pressure or heat and pressure joins the layers I and ll together and also causes the adhesive to enter and seal the open ends of the packages A to F. A sterilizable glue is preferably used for this purpose, so that the whole package maybe sterilized in an autoclave or in any other convenient manner. f
The adhesive spots 25 are preferably of nonsterilizable glue which will be partially or wholly inactivated during sterilization, thus permitting easy removal of the individual packages A to F when the package is open. The individual packages A to F may also be enclosed in wrappers 5 of wax paper or the like, which is stuck temporarily to the layer IIJ by the application of heat and becomes loose upon the sterilization of the entire package. While it is preferred as above stated for conveniencein manufacture that the top and bottom sheets Ill and I I, which form the envelope, be joined by adhesive around all four edges and be otherwise separate sheets, it will be apparent that a single sheet of double the width and folded so as to eliminate the need for sealingalong one or both of the edges could be utilized without departing from the invention in its broader aspect.
