5 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety night light glass or candlestick.
Heretofore, in the construction of safety night light glasses or Candlesticks it has been customary to position a slow burning, relatively thick candle within a glass cup. This construction has been found objectionable in that during the night, upon occasion, the heat of the candle has caused the glass to crack and break in pieces permitting the molten wax and burning wick to fall on the surface upon which the glass is restlng, marring the surface and sometimes causing fire.
It is proposed to overcome this objection in this invention by embedding a metallic safety shield within the glass of the container in a manner to hold the container together in the event that the heat of the candle cracks the same, so as to prevent the glass from falling apart to `hold the molten wax and burning wick from falling out of the glass.
It is proposed to characterize the metallic safety shield by a piece of Woven wire mesh or a chain wire element directly molded into and embedded within the surface of the glass in a manner to hold the glass together when it cracks.
A modication of the invention proposes to characterize the metallic safety shield by a perforated sheet metal cupv shaped element embedded within the glass container.
It is a further object of this invention to characterize the perforated sheet metal member by a pair of inter-engaged perforated sheet metal cups provided with alignable openings arranged to permit the passage of light and which are adapted to be disaligned to close the openings and prevent the passage of molten Wax in the event the glass container breaks away from the sheet metal cups.

The safety night light glass or candlestick, according to this invention, comprises an `open top glass container I5 having a candle il. The open top glass container is constructed so as to have a side wall lila connected at its bottom with a bottom wall Ich. The candle is of the short stubby Variety and has a central wick i2 which is adapted to be lit. The topv of the candle ll is disposed slightly beneath the open top of the glass lli to prevent the molten wax from ruiming over the top thereof and on to the surface upon which the night light is resting. y
A metallic safety shield is embedded within the walls of the glass Iii. This metallic safety shield comprises a piece of Woven Wire mesh material I 3 molded directly into and embedded between the faces of the walls Iiia and lb of the glass l0. This wire mesh material I3 is provided for the purpose of connecting the areas of the glass l0 so as to prevent the glass from falling apart in the event the heat of the candle cracks the glass.
In the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 4 a safety night light glass is shown of a construction similar to that previously described except for a slightly diiferent form of metallic safety shield. In this form of the invention the metallic safety shield comprises a chain wire element I3 which is embedded into the walls liliL and [Gb of the glass lil. This metallic Wire element I3 is a ne variety of wirewhich is'gen- Yerally known in the trade as chicken wire.
In this form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the construction of the night light glass is characterized by still another type of metallic safety shield. In this form of the invention the safety shield comprises a perforated sheet metal member I3 embedded into the Walls of the glass Il). 'I'his sheet metal member I3 is provided with a plurality of closely arranged comparatively large perforations through which rays of light from the candle I I may readily pass.
In this form of the invention shown in Figs.
7-10 the construction of the night light glass is characterized by a glass 20 having a pair of interengaging Cup shaped members 20EL and 20h. The inner cup shaped member 24)*l houses a candle 2l having a central wick 22.
A metallic safety shield is embedded Within the side and bottom Walls of the inter-engaged Cup shaped members 20ab and 200' and comprising a perforated sheet metal member 23 comprises a pair of interengaged perforated sheet metal Cups 23a and 23b disposed between the adjacent faces of the cup shaped glass members 20a and 20h. The cup shaped sheet metal members 23a and 23h are provided With a plurality of aligned .perforations and a means is provided for facilitating the movement of one of the sheet metal cups relative to the other for aligning and disaligning the perforations in these sheet metal cups. This means comprises a knob 24 extended from the .sheet metal Cup 23al and disposed within a Cut-out 25 for-med in the bottom face of Vthe outer glass cup Zl. This knob 24 may be rotated for rotating the sheet metal Cup 23a relative to the sheet'metal 'l2-3b for aligning and disaligning the perforations. A pin 26 extends from the sheet metal rcup v23" and is disposed within a slo-t '21 lformed in the sheet metal member 2'3a for limiting rotation of the sheet metal cups to positions vin which the perforations will be aligned or disaligned.
The manner for using Ythis latter form of the invention is as follows: Normally, the sheet metal Cups 23a and '23h are arranged in a rotative position relative to Veach other in which their perfo- -rations will be aligned to 4permit the passage of light 'from the candle 2l. However, upon retiring itis desirable to rotate the knob 2li to similarly rotate the sheet'm'etal `cup 23Hre`lative to the `sheet metall cup 231). This Idisaligns the perforations in the Cups 23El and 231, and in the event that the Vheat of the candle should Crack the glass members 2B and 'Zlib it will be impossible for the molten Wax to pass through the disaligned perforations.
It is to `be understood that this device maybe used for any suitable purpose without any danger -o-f re. For example, this safety night light glass -or candle stick may be placed in an infants 'room without fear that the place 'may be s'et 'on lire by the breaking of the night light glass.
While I have illustrated and described Vthe prei'erred embodiments of my invention, it is to -be understood that I do not limit vmyself to the precise `constructions herein disclosed and the Yright and bottom Walls, comprising a pair of inter-engaged perforated sheet metal cups, having alignable perforations; and means for moving one of said cups relative to the other for aligning said perforations and for moving said perforations out of alignment.

A safety night light glass or Candlestick, comprising an open top glass container for a candle and having a side Wall and a bottom wall, and a. metallic safety shield embedded Within said side and bottom walls, comprising a pair of interengaged perforated sheet metal cups, having alignable perforations, and means for moving one of said cups relative to the other for aligning said perforations vand for moving said perforations out of alignment, said means comprising a knob extended from one of said sheet metal Cups and 'disposed'within an opening formed in the bottom of said glass.

A safety night light glass or Candlestick, comprising-an open top glass container for a candle and having a side walland va bottom wall, and a metallic safety shield embedded within said side and bottom walls, comprising Aa pair of inter-.en- 'gaged perforated sheet metal Cups, having alignable perforations, and means for moving one o'f said 'Cups relative to the other for aligning said perforations and for moving said perforations out 'of alignment, 'said `glass being constructed of inter-en'gageable cup yshaped 'members with said perforated sheet metal cups being disposed rbetween said cup shaped members.

A safety night light glass or Candlestick, comprising a glass Container having an open top for receiving 'a candle, a pair of interengaged 'sheet metal cups embedded 'in the `walls of said container and turnable relative to one another., 4sa-id :Cups being formed with aligned perforations, anda knob mounted ron one of said cups by which it may be 'turned relative tothe other cup for aligning Aand vdisaligning said perforations to Control the passage of light through the walls of said container.

A 'safety night light glass 'or Candlestick, comprising `a'glass container having an open top 'for receiving a candle, a pair of .interengaged sheet 'metal Cups embedded in the walls o'f said lcontainer and turn'able relative to one another, said cups being formed with aligned perforations, and a knfzxbrnounted on one of said cups by which it may be turned relative to the other Cup for aligning and disaligning said perforations vto Control the passage of light throughthe walls of said container, 'said glass container being constructed i 4of inter-engaged cup shaped members with said 'sheet metal cups vbeing disposed lbetween said 'cup'shaped members, said outer Cup shaped member having its top edge formed with an inwardly 'extending lip engaging the top edges of said sheet metal cups and its bottom Wall formed with a `central opening in which said knob is disposed.
