The present invention relates to an apparatus for verifying perforated tape in which the perforations are arranged according to a selected code. According to the present invention, in the course of verification, an unperforated tape is perforated by the apparatus in such a manner that only correct or verified characters are obtained. Upon completion of the process, the originaltape, i. e.'the tape which has been sensed, may be discarded and the newly perforated tape containing only verified data preserved.

Accordingly, the tape perforating mechanism employed in connection with the present invention includes four punch driving magnets for operating the "character forming punches. Two additional punch magnets are employed, one for advancing the tape' through the perforating mechanism and the return line for the other for forming the usual center drive hole perforations in the tape. The tape perforating mechanism is operatively and electrically connected to a coding device and this latter device employs ten circuit closing magnets, each representative of one digit in the Arabic system for closing coding circuits leading to the four perforating magnets. An additional magnet is provided in the coding device for closing circuits leading to the tape advancing and center drive hole forming magnets in the perforating mechbreaking device, the function of which is to openor close the common return or ground connections for all of the magnets existing in the perforating and sensing mechanisms. The magnet M08 is adapted upon energization thereof to actuate a ratchet controlled tape driving drum 28, while the magnet MOD is adapted upon energization thereof to operate a punch 28 which cooperates with a pair of dies 22. The various magnets just described are electrically connected to the coding mechanism 30 for control thereby and the common return wire or line for the magnets is connected through a pair of contacts 34 to the circuit maker and breaker'20, from whence the line may, under certain conditions, extend to ground as at 80. As stated above, the circuit connections between the coding device 30 and the various magnets at the perforating mechanism 40 are similar to the circuit connections shown inthe above mentioned apparent immediately.

Simultaneously, with the energization of the magnet LM the pair of contacts '52 will become opened, thus breaking the magnet circuit. The magnet LM will remain energized, however, inasmuch as the normally open pair of contacts 48 will become closed and current will follow a path from the battery B, through a pair of normally closed contacts 54, through the contacts 48 and magnet LM, to ground at 31: The pair 01' contacts 50, which are also controlled by the magnet LM, will, upon becoming closed, cause a lamp L to become lighted through a series arrangement of contacts v controlled by the magnets CMI, M2, 0M3 and 'CM4 0'! the of. It, is to be noted, however, that inasmuch as the common return line b of the sensing mechanism I0 is connected through the pair of contacts 56 to ground at 4| the tape T will be periodically advanced in synchronism with the tape '1". Under other conditions of operation-it may be desired to employ the apparatus solely as a tape perforating device without advancing the tape T in thesensing" mechanism 10, and under such circumstances a switch S3 may be employed to permanently open the pair of contacts 33. A switch S4 is provided for controlling the contacts 84 when it is desired to space the tape T without spacing the tape T.
It is thought that from the above description the nature, operation and many advantages 0! the herein described duplication verification apparatus will be apparent. While there has been v shown and described and pointed out the i'undamental novel features 01 the invention, as applied to a single modification, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the formand details 01' the device illustrated, and in its operation, may be made by those skilled in the art without departcircuit maker and breaker 20, current for the a lamp issuing from the battery B and passing through these lattercontacts and the contacts 50 to ground at 39.
' The circuit maker and breaker by-puss mechanism Under certain circumstances, it may be desired to utilize the apparatus solely for manual tape perforating purposes and in such instances the sensing mechanism I II, for sensing the original recorded data, and the circuit maker andbreaker mechanism will not be required. Toward this end means are provided for permanently connecting the common return line b of the magnet DM in the sensing mechanism ID to ground at 4! through a pair 01' normally open contacts 56 controlled by a by-pass magnet BPM. The magnet BPM is adapted to become energized from the battery B through a manually controlled switch 8, which, upon becoming closed, allows current to fiow through a pair of normally closed contacts 58 to the magnet RPM and from thence through a pair of contacts 60 to ground at 43.

What is claimed is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, a circuit making and breaking device comprising a pair of magnets, a normally closed contact for each magnet operable upon energization of the magnet to become opened and a circuit under the control of said magnets leading through the pair 01' contacts in series.
2. In an apparatus of the. character described, a circuit making and breaking device comprising a first series of magnets and a second series of' of each pair of magnets in series and through the contacts of the successive pairs in series.
3. In an apparatus 01 the character described, a circuit making and breaking device comprising a first series of magnets and a second series of magnets, said magnets being arranged in pairs and each pair including a magnet in the first series and a magnet in the second series, a normally closed contact for each magnet operable upon energization of the magnet to become opened, a normally open contact for each magnet operable upon energization of the magnet to become closed, and 'a pair of circuits under the control of said magnets, one of said circuits extending through the pairs 01' contacts of each pair of magnets in the series and through the contacts of the successive pairs in series, 'and the other circuit leading through the other pairs of contacts of each pair of magnets in the series and through said other pairsof contacts of the and permit actuation of the various keys theresuccessive pairs in series.
4. In an apparatus of the, character described,
a circuit making and breaking device comprising I a first series of magnets and a second series of. magnets, said magnets being arranged in pairs and each pair including a magnet in the first series and a magnet in the second series, plural pairs of contacts for each magnet under the control thereof and a plurality of circuits under the control of said contacts leading through the respective pairs of contacts of. each pair of magnets in the series and through the respective pairs of contacts through the successive pairs in series.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, a circuit making and breaking device comprising contact for each magnet operable upon energization'of the magnet to become opened and a circuit under the control of said. magnets leading through the pairs of contacts of each pair of magnets in series and through the contacts of the successive pairs in series.
6. In an apparatus of the character described,
a circuit making and breaking device comprising a first series of magnets and a second series of magnets, said magnets being arranged in pairs and each pair including a magnet in the first series and a magnet in the second series, means for selectively controlling the energization of the magnets of the first series, separatemeans for selectively controlling the energization of the magnets of the second series, a normally closed contact for each magnet operable upon energizatlon of the magnet tobecome opened and a circuit under the control of said magnets leading through the pairs of contacts of each pair of magnets in series and through the contacts 'of the successive pairs in series, and means for causing said circuit to by-pass said magnets.

In a verifying apparatus for-verifying per-' forated data on. a first record media produced from original data in corrected form on a similar second record media, an analyzing device adapted to sense perforations in the index positions of the first record media including circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said sensing means upon sensing one or more perforations in a column, a perforating mechanism for perforating corrected data on the second record media, a keyboard having depressable keys for controlling the perforating mechanism including circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said keys, means operable from said keyboard for advancing said first record media through the analyzing device and the second record media through the perforating mechanism simultaneously, and means under the Joint control. of said circuits for rendering the perforating mechanism inoperative when the perforations undergoing sensing in the analyzing device difier from the keys depressed at said keyboard.
8. In a verifying apparatus for verifying perforated data on a record media produced from original data incorrected form on. a similar second record media, an analyzing device adapted to sense perforations in the index point positions of the first record media including circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said sensing means upon sensing one or more perforations in a column, a perforating mechanism for perforating corrected data on the second record media including a series of punch operating magnets and punches therefor, a keyboard having depressable keys for controlling said magnets ineluding circuits leading from the keyboard to the perforating mechanism and additional circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said keyboard, and means operable upon completion of said analyzing device circuits and said keyboard circuits forrendering said perforating mechanism inoperative when a character undergoing sensing in the analyzing device differs from the keys depressed at said keyboard.

Ina verifying apparatus for verifying per-f forated data on a record media produced from original data in corrected form on' a similar second record media, an analyzing deviceadapt'ed to sense perforations in the index point'positions of the first record media including circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said sensing means upon sensing one or more perforations in a column, a perforating mechanism for.
perforating corrected data on the second record media including punch operating magnets and punches therefor, a keyboard having depressable keys for controlling the perforating mechanism including circuits connecting the keyboard and perforating 'mechanism, additional circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said keyboard, a common terminal circuit for-said magnets and means operable upon selective completion of the analyzing device circuits and 'said latter keyboard circuits for breaking said 'common terminal circuit when a character undergoing sensing in the analyzing device difiers from the keys depressed at said keyboard.
10. In a. verifying apparatus for verifying perforated data on a record media produced from original data in corrected .form on a similar second record media, an analyzing device adapted to sense perforations in the index point positions of the first record media including circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said sensing means upon sensing one or more perforations in a column, a perforating mechanism for perforating corrected data on the second. record media including punch operating magnets and punches therefor, a keyboard having depressable keys for controlling the perforating mechanism including circuits connecting the keyboard and perforating mechanism, additional circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said keyboard, a common terminal circuit for said magnets, means operable upon completion of the analyzing device circuits and said latter keyboard circuits forbreaking said com-' mon return line when a character undergoing sensing in the analyzing device differs from'the keys depressed at said keyboard, said means comprising a series of magnets selectively operable under the control of said sensing device and a second similar series of magnets operable under the control of-said keyboard, said magnets being arranged in pairs, and a pair of normally closed contacts associated with each of said latter magnets and arranged in series, said common return line normally extending through said latter contacts in succession.

In a verifying apparatus for verifying perforated data on a record media produced from original data in corrected form on a similar second record media, an analyzing device adapted to sense perforations in the index point positions of the first record media including circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said sensing means upon sensing one or more perforations in a column, a perforating mechanism for perforating corrected data on the second record media including punch operating magnets and punches therefor, a keyboard having depressable keys for controlling the perforating mechanism including circuits connecting the keyboard and perforating mechanism, additional circuits adapted to be completed under the control of-said keyboard,'a common terminal circuit for said magnets, means operable upon completion of the analyzing device circuits and said latter keyboard circuits for breaking said common return line when a character undergoing sensing in the analyzing device differs from the keys depressed at said keyboard, said means comprising a series of magnets selectively operable under the control of said sensing device and a second similar series of magnets operable under the contro. of said keyboard, said magnets being arranged in pairs, a pair of normally closedcontacts associated with each of said latter magnets and arranged in series, said terminal circuit normally extending through a pair of contacts associated with one of said magnets and from thence through a pair of contacts associated with the other magnet with which it. is paired and from thence through the contacts of each pair of magnets successively.
12. In a verifying apparatus for verifying perforated data on a first record media produced from original data in corrected form on a similar iorating mechanism simultaneously, and means under the Joint control of said sensing mechanism and the keyboard for rendering said perforating mechanism inoperative when 'a character undergoing sensing at said index positions of the analyzing device does not correspond with the operation of the keyboard.
13. In a verifying apparatus for verifying perforated data on afirst record media produced from original data in corrected form on a similar record media, an analyzing device adapted to sense perforations in the index positions of said first record media including a plurality of circuits adapted to be completed under the control of said sensingrneans upon sensing one or more perforations in a column, a perforating mechanism for perforating corrected data on the second record media including perforating magnets having a common return circuit for the .magnets, a coding mechanism including magnets having relay circuits'under the control of said magnets, a circuit making and breaking device including a first series of magnets selectively energizabie under the control of said sensing brushes .and a second series of magnets energizable under the control of said relay circuits, said magnets being arranged in pairs and each pair including a magnet in the first series anda magnet in the second series, a normally closed ochtact for each magnet operable upon energisation of the magnet to become opened, said return line being under the control of said circuit maker through the successive pairs in series.
