UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FOOT-REST FOR REGISTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed March 19, 1880.
To all whom at may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN Y. OONKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Foot-Rests for Hot-Air Registers, which improvement is fully set. forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective View of the foot-rest embodying my invention.
This invention relates to footrests which are attached to registers; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same and the attaching devices, substantially as hereinafter particularly set forth.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a horizontal plate or piece, from the side ends of which rise vertical pieces B B,and 0 represents a horizontal piece supported on the top of the pieces B B, the several parts being constructed of wood or metal properly secured to each other or castin one piece, the whole forming an open frame or foot'rest, which may be of the size of a hot-air register (shown in dot- .ted lines) or larger or smaller than the same,
as desired, so that when said frame is applied to the register all or some of the heat will pass through it.
In order to secure the rest to the register, I provide, at the upper ends of the side pieces, B, hooks D D, which may be of various forms. In the present case they are hinged or slotted and connected to said side pieces, B, by means of bolts E E, so as to be tightened against the Walls of open-work of theregister; or they may be arranged horizontally, in order to engage with the upright bars or sliding registers. The register may also be formed with eyes to receive the hooks of the rest, or the latter have eyes for engagement of hooks connected to the register 5 or the rest may be cast in one or more pieces withthe stationary frame of the register. Furthermore, the side pieces, B, or bottom plate,
Patent No. 231,402, dated August 24, 1880.
(No model.)
A, have rearward-projecting lugs F, which rest on the lower portion of the register and are se- 5 cured to or formed with said pieces or plate.
The operation is as follows: When the feet are to be warmed they are placed on the plate A as a support, and so are reached by the heat from the register, they beingsustained in acomfortable, convenient, and non-fatiguing man ner, and without liability of slipping.
The fastenings I) prevent separation of the rest from the register, and the lugs F serve to prevent downward displacementor shifting of the rest, so that the weight of the feet and rest is transferred to the register, it being also noticed that the rest is elevated above the floor of the apartment, whereby there is avoided the employment of supports on the floor, and there is a saving of the room thereof.
The top piece, O, serves as a deflector and directs the heat within the confines of the rest; but, if desired, the latter may be smaller than the register, wherebysome of the heatm ay pass above or below the rest. The deflector may also provide an additional support for the feet when it is not desired to place them on the bottom plate, A.
It will also be noticed that the rest protects the wall or paper snrroundin g the register.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with bottom piece, A, and side pieces, B, ofslotted fasteningD, clampscrew E, and beveled lower support, F.
2. In combination with bottom piece, A, and side pieces, B, and fastening devices for attaching them to the outside of a register, the deflector 0, supported by said pieces, substantially as set forth.
