FISHLINE PACKAGE Filed March 13, 1940 Patented Mar. 2, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FISHLINE PACKAGE Walter J. Hamburger, Dedham, Mass, assignor to H. Schindler & 00., Inc., Canton, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application March 13,1940, Serial No. 323,685
7 Claims.
This invention relates to packages for display and storage of fish-lines.
My novel package permits bodily removal of the coil of line therefrom, enabling the purchaser to handle and thoroughly inspect the line before purchase, it permits ready transfer of the line from package to the service reel in the field, and provides a partially collapsible support for the coil whereby pressure of the support against the interior of the coil may be substantially reduced to permit the user to easily remove the coil from the package for storage and use, and to again return it thereto.
The principal object of my invention is to provide .a fish-line package which permits removal of the coiled line and return of the line in coil form to the package.
Another object is to provide such a package which permits ready transfer of .the line to and from the service reel.
Other objects relate to the construction and mode of operation and will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and accompanying drawing which exemplify one embodiment of my inventionv chosen for the purpose of illustration. r
' In the drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a package embodying my invention; i
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the opposite side of the package from'that shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the package of Figs. 1 and 2 with parts broken away and shown in section;
Fig. 4 is a section on the lines 44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a section similar to that of Fig. 4 but with one ofthe side members rotated to the position for detachment from the other side member;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section through a portion of the wall of one side member showing a coil of fish-line in position thereon, the other side member being completely removed and not shown; and
Fig. '7 is an enlarged section similar to that of Fig. 6 but showing a piece of strand material encircling the coil of fish-line and in position for knotting.
The package comprises two relatively flat side members 15 and 16 which are detachably securedtogether in parallel position.
The inner face of the side member I5 is provided with three outstanding lugs l7. Each of these lugs is provided with a lip or flange l8 at its free. end. semicircular perforations I9 extend transversely through the side member 15 at the respective :bases of the lugs l'l.
The inner face of the side member I6 is provided with three outstanding lugs 20 and each of these lugs is provided with a lip or flange 2| extending outwardly at its free end (Figs.- 2, 3, 6 and '7). Transverse perforations 22 are provided in the side member I6 at the respective bases of the lugs 20. Circular perforations 25 extend transversely through the side member l6. Transverse slots 23 are provided in the side member l6 and the width of each slot gradually decreases as the slot extends away from the base of the respective adjacent lug 20. Each slot 23' at its end adjacent the lug 20 is wide enough to permit the free end and flange of a lug I! to pass therethrough (see Fig. 5). As the side member I5 and its attached lugs I! are rotated clockwise (looking at Fig, 5) with respect to the side member IE to the position shown in Fig. 4 the lugs I! slide along the slots 23 to the narrower extremities thereof. In that position the flanges I8 of the lugs l1 overlap theedges of the slots 23 and releasably retain the two side members i5 and IS in parallel position (see Figs. 2, 3 and 4). In that position portions of the lugs il preferably frictionally engage the sides of the slots 23 (see Fig. 3) so that manual pressure is required to rotate the member IS in counterclockwise direction (looking at Fig. 5) with respect to the member 16. Thus the side members l5 and I6 are normally in the relation shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 but for complete separation thereof they are rotated to the" position of Fig. 5 where the flanges l8 may freely pass through the slots 23. Three outstanding flanges 30 are provided on the inner face of the side member l6. Each flange extends between the bases of adjacent lugs 20, and is located just outside of the outer edges of the slots 23 (Figs. 4 and 5). Perforations 3| extend transversely through the side members I5 and I6 at their respective centers. A handle 33 is secured to the side member I5 by any suitable means.
I prefer to make the entire package of transparent material, such as cellulose acetate, Lucite or Tenite but any substantially rigid material may be used. If Lucite or. Tenite is used, the package may be molded in three pieces, the handle and the two side members each with its respective lugs integral therewith.
In use, the coil of fly line is placed on the lugs 20 and the side member 15 is assembled with the side member l6 by inserting-the'ends 'of the lugs I! through the slots 23 and rotating them to the closed position shown in Fig. 4. The purchaser may remove the coil of line for inspection by merely rotating the side member to the position of Fig. 5, separating the side members and lifting the coil over the ends of the lugs 20.
To transfer the line from the package to the service reel, a pencil stick or the like is inserted loosely through the central perforations 3| and and to detachably knot each string around the adjacent edge of the side member I 6 as shown in Fig. 6. The assembled package isthen supported upon any convenient member loosely inserted I through the central perforations and using the handle 33 the package is rotated aboutthe 25.
inserted member as an axis and the line is wound directly from the service-reel to the outer facesv of the lugs I! and 20. In such position the coil of :linewill be in relatively taut condition, the
interior of the coil being supported by the six lugsand 20 which are each spaced substantially an equal distance from the two adjacent lugs as shown in Fig. 4. The side member -I5 is then rotated to the position shown in Fig. 5v
where the lugsll are in collapsed position and all, tension of the interior of the coil of line is released said coil then being supported only by the three lugs 20., The lugs i! may then be ithdrawnfrom the slots 23 and the side member [5,;removed from; the package. The flanges 21.49
on the ;-ends ;of th e IugsZiI serve to prevent the coilfromslipping over the ends of the lugs 20 while ;t1f 1e 1u g s J! are Withdrawnfrom the slots: 23. The coil is then preferably secured in coil form by the three, strings ML This istdonepby untyingeachstring M1 and pulling the-lower end (Fig. 6) through thehole -25' (Fig,, 6) so that the string. encircles the coil and may be knottedas, shown in;-Fig. 7. The coil isthen encircled by pieces-of ,string at three spaced points comerspending to the holes .25. V
,Thecoil may then be easily removed from the lu s; 20 sinceall tautness or tension oftheline wa s;released whenthe lugs I! wererotated to,
collapsed position. The coil may be removed for portion spaced from the; baseofrthe. adjacent storage; and. later slipped overthe ends of the lugs 20 .and'the package reassembled for retransferofvthe. line to the. service reel. The packagemay be; used to. removesdififerent lines from the service ,reel sincev it permits bodily removal of each coil from the lugs and bodily return thereto. The function of the flanges 38 ;is to retard any tendencyof the line to enter the slots 23:when th'elugs l1 areinserted therein with a coil'of line in place on the lugs 20. 1
.The perforations [9,: 22, 25 and 31' also serve to admit air-and to :veritilate the line when it is in. placeon thelugs l1 and 20; his to be understoodthat this disclosureis for the purpose of J illustration and that various changes in shape, proportion and-arrangementof parts and the substitution of equivalent elements may be madev without departing from the spirit andalscopeaof the; invention 7 as .set forth in the j ppfi isledclaima I claim:
