NVENTOR. v GZZrdizzer Patented Mar. 2, 1943 UNITED STATE ATEN'i or ies:
4 Claims.
My invention relates to the tabulation of debit and credit tickets and has among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved recording device designed as an aid to bank tellers in making up such records.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan view with certain parts broken away for the purpose of illustration; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a stop.
In the embodiment selected for illustration, I make use of a walled structure I6 comprising parallel side walls l2 and end walls l4 and I6. End wall I6 may be glued to the side walls I2, while the end wall I4 is pivotally connected at IS with the side walls. Both side walls l2 have their upper edges declining in the direction of the end wall I4, and this end wall has a cover part or hand rest 26 fixedly secured thereto and normally overlying the side walls. A cover part 22 is pivotally connected at 24 with the side walls I2 and normally overlies the side walls, as in Figures 1 and 2.
Two transverse walls 26 are arranged between the side walls I2 and have end portions 28 projecting beyond the side walls. The end portions 28 are narrower than their respective walls 26, and the side walls may be slotted to accommodate the extensions. The walls 26 may be glued to the side walls I2. The hand rest 20 rests on the two extensions 28 of one of the walls 26 while the cover part 22' rests on the extensions 28 of the other wall 26. Extending at right angles to the walls 26 is a partition 36, which partition is located equal distances from the side walls l2 and in parallelism therewith.
Figure 3 illustrates a block 32 located between the side walls l2 and having a slot 34 into which the lower edge margin of the partition 36 is pressed. The partition may be glued to the block 32 and the latter may be glued to the side walls I2 and the walls 26. The upper edge of the partition 36 lies substantially in the plane of the upper edges of the side walls I2.
To each wall 26 is secured a stop plate 36. Blocks 38 are secured to the side walls 26 and the stops 36 are secured to the blocks 36 by screws 46. Each of the stops 36 projects beyond view taken along the its respective wall 26, as at 42, to engage debit and credit tickets arranged in groups 44 and 46, respectively. Each of the groups 44 and 46 has close fitting engagement with the walls 26 and the partition 36.
In Figure 3, the block 32 is provided with two bores 48 for the reception of the lower ends of coil springs 56. The upper ends of the coil springs respectively lie in bores 52 in blocks 54, to each of which is secured a table 56 respectively supporting the debit and credit ticket groups 44 and 46. Figure 2 illustrates the right angular alignment of the walls 26 with respect to the upper edges of the side walls I2, and the bores 46 and 52 are coaxial with the springs 56 having their axes arranged at right angles to the upper edges of the side walls. Thus the blocks 54 are spring urged upwardly for pressing the debit and credit ticket groups 44 and 46 against the stops 36. Both the blocks 54 are respectively guided by the partition 36, the two walls 26 and one side wall'l Rotatably journaled in the side walls I2 are two shafts 58 and 66 respectively provided with rollers 62 and 64 fixedly secured thereto, as by' nuts 66 threadedly connected with the respective shafts and arranged to engage the ends of the rollers. Each shaft is provided with a knob 68 to facilitate rotation thereof. Upon the roller 62 is securely wound a tape supply I6 comprising a web II made up of a carbon strip I2 and a paper strip 14. These strips are unwound simultaneously from the supply 16, the carbon strip 12 underlying the paper strip and overlapping the uppermost debit and credit tickets in the groups 44 and 46 about one-half their areas adjacent the partition 36. The web II rides over the stops 42 and is securely wound on the roller 64. Thus rotation of the roller 64 unwinds the tape from the supply 16. The tape may be moved back and forth through respective rotation of the rollers 62 and 64, as when checking entries thereon.
The debit tickets are pink in color and are arranged on the left side of the partition 36, while the white credit tickets are located on the right side of the partition. Springs 16 are secured to one side wall l2 and engage the tape wound on the respective rollers 62 and 64 to restrain the tape from accidental unwinding. The pivoted hand rest 26 and the cover part 22 facilitate placement and removal of the tape.
In operation, the uppermost debit and credit tickets underlie the carbon strip 12 so that entries made on the paper strip 14 are recorded on the respective tickets. Both the blocks 54 move upwardly as respective tickets are removed so that the carbon strip 12 will always lie across the respective tickets. Amounts entered on the left side of the tape represent debits and all amounts entered on the right side represent credits. The two columns of figures may be added on a machine and the total amount of each will show cash paid out or debits and cash received or credits. At the close of a business day, all the debits and credits are already sorted and eliminate the necessity of making individual carbon copies of tickets, as in the usual practice. The tape remains in the device until it is used up, and the tape is dated at the start of each business day and is always handy for reference purposes.
Each of the tables 56 is provided with a notch 18 which renders the debit and credit tickets more accessible for manual manipulation.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully illustrate myinvention, that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service.
I claim:
1. In a device of the type described, the combination of two spaced side Walls and a first end wall fixedly secured thereto, a second end wall pivotally connected with the side walls, said side walls having. upper edges declining in the direction of .said second end wall, two spaced transverse Walls .secured to :said side walls, a first cover hinged to said side walls and coactingj therewith and with said first end wall and one of said transverse walls to provide a rolled tape enclosure, a second cover fixed to said secand end wall :and coasting therewith and with said side walls and "the other of said transverse walls to provide .a second .rolled tape enclosure, said first and second covers normally lying on the upper edges of said side walls, :and said transverse'walls having :upper edges spaced from said first and second covers to provide passages Gil for tape extending from one chamber to the other.
2. The invention described in claim 1 wherein a partition extends transversely of said transverse walls, a body secured between said side walls and the transverse walls and constituting a mount for said partition, bodies loosely positioned between the side walls, the transverse walls and said partition for supporting sheets underneath the tape, and resilient means acting on said body and said bodies to urge the latter upwardly to bring the sheets thereon to positions adjacent the tape.
3. The invention described in claim 1 wherein a partition extends transversely of said transverse walls, a body secured between said side walls and the transverse walls and constituting a mount for said partition, bodies loosely positioned between the side walls, the transverse walls and said partition for supporting sheets underneath the tape, resilient means acting on said body andsaid bodies to urge the latter upwardly to bring the sheets thereon to positions adjacent the tape, and stops extending across the upper edges of said transverse walls for engaging sheet on said bodies.
- 4. The invention-described in claim 1 wherein a partition extends transversely of said transverse walls, a body secured between said side walls and the transverse walls and constituting a mount for said partition, bodies loosely positioned between the side walls, the transverse walls and said partition for supporting sheets underneath the tape, resilient means acting-on said body and said bodies to urge the latter upwardly to bring the sheets thereon to positions adjacent the tape,-said side walls having slots, extensions on said transverse walls projecting laterally of the outer faces of the side walls throughsaid slots, and means on said bodies extending through said slots to support sheet mar- ;g-ins laterally of :said outer ifaces.
