y CLIP FOR WRITNG BOARDS Filed March -28, 1942 Patented Mar. 2, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLIP FORWRITING BOARDS Harold A. Oldham, Des Moines, Iowa Application March 28, 1942, Serial No. 436,677
k(Cl. 24-66) 6 Claims.
This invention relates to a clip for a writing board, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which can be readily applied to a writing board and in a manner whereby the clip can be shifted as desired to a selected point along the margin of the board to bring the clip to such position with respect to the board as the needs of practice may require.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a clip of this kind comprising only two parts, one constituting a clamping element and the other a tensioning element, and wherein the tensioning element operates to hold the clip in desired position along the margin of the board and in a manner to also maintain the clamping member under effective pressure.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising an elongated clamping member provided along a longitudinal marginal portion thereof with an outstanding bead to provide a fulcrum to facilitate rocking movement of the clamping member to an extent to permit the application of a paper sheet or the like to be clamped to the board and also the re- -inoval of such sheet or the like. The invention consists in the details of .construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved clip for a writing board whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a clip constructed in accordance with an. embodiment of my invention, a second selected position of the clip being indicated by broken lines.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a view in rear elevation of the clip as illustrated in Figure 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, B denotes a writing board of desired dimensions and which has its marginal edges substantially straight with the corner portions a thereof rounded. This board B may be produced from any material desired.
The clip associated with the board comprises two members C and T, the member C constituting a clamping or holding element and the member T constituting a tensioning element. The clamping or holding element C, as herein disclosed, comprises an elongated body I of wood or other preferred material. This body I has extending outwardly from its under face along a margin thereof a bead 2. This bead 2 is of a length coextensive in length with the body I and is substantially semicircular in cross section. This bead 2 `provides a ulcrum upon which the body I may be readily rocked when the clip is inapplied position upon the board B to facilitate the placement or removal of a paper sheet or the like.
The body I forwardly of the bead 2 is disposed transversely on a forwardly and downwardly inoline, with the margin b of the body I remote from the bead 2 slightly beveled to insure said marginal portion Ahaving close contact throughout the length of the body I with the sheet or the like placed upon the board B and to be held thereon.
The central portion of the body I is formed to provide an upstanding and relatively long ange 3, the forward face of which in cross section being concave to facilitate the contact of the fingers of a hand with said flange 3 to rock the body I in a direction away from the board B.
In the rear face of the flange 3 is provided an elongated slot 4 which extends downwardly and forwardly on an incline of approximately 45 degrees although, of course, this degree of inclination may be Varied as may be deemed desirable.
` The tensioning device T comprises an elongated and longitudinally split tubular member 5 0f sheet metal or other material comprising a high degree of tension when expanded. One marginal portion defining the split of the member T is received within the slot 4 of the body I while the opposed marginal portion, when the clip is applied, has close and tight contact with the under face of the board B.
When the clip is applied to the board B, the necessary expansion of the member 5 results in such member 5 urging the body I under considerable pressure toward the board B, thus assuring the clip being effectively maintained in applied position upon the board B and also assuring the member I of the clamping or holding member C having effective contact with a sheet or the like to be held upon the board B.
In view of the foregoing, it is believed to be readily apparent that the clip as herein embodied is extremely simple in construction and one which can be produced at an extremely low cost without sacrifice of efciency.
It is also to be particularly pointed out that the member T coacts with the member C and the board B in a manner to readily allow the clip to clamping element and the other a tensioning element, the tensioning element constituting a longitudinal split tubular member, one marginal portion of the tensioning member engaging the clamping member and the opposed marginal portion to engage the board from below, an outstanding bead carried by the rear marginal portion of the clamping member to provide a fulcrum upon which said member may rock, and an upstanding ange extending along the central. portion of the clamping member to provide means for rocking the clamping member against the tension of the Y tensioning element.
1. A holding clip for a writing board comprisingv A' two members, one of said members constituting an' clamping element and the other a tensioning ele- Y ment, the tensioning element constituting a lon'- 5 A holding-clip for a writing board comprising two members; one of said members constituting a clamping element and the other a tensioning element, thet'ensioning element constituting a longigitudinally split tubular member,:one longitudinal marginal portion of the tensioning member en v gaging the clamping member and the opposed marginal portion to engage the board from below, the clamping member being provided with a slot in which' isreceived the coacting marginalportion of the tensioning member.
2. A holding clip for a writing board comprising' two members, one of said members constituting a clamping element andthe other a tensioning element, the tensioning element constituting a longitudinally split tubular member, one longitudinal marginal portion of the tensioning member engaging the clamping member and the 0ppos'ed marginal portionrto engage theboard from below, the clamping member being provided with a slet' in which is received the coacting marginal portion of the tensioning member, said` slot being disposed forwardly and downwardly.
3.- A holding clip for a writing board comprising two members, one of" said members constituting a clamping element and the other a tensioning element, the tensioning element constituting a longitudinally split tubular member, one longitudinal marginal portion of the tensioning member engaging the clamping member and the opposed marginal portion to engage the board from below, and an outstanding bead carried by the rear marginal portion of the clamping member to provide a fulcrum upon which said member may rock.
4. A holding clip for a writing board comprising two members, one of said members constituting a -tudinal split tubular member, one marginal portion `of the tensioning member engaging the clamping member and the opposed marginal portion to engage the. board fromfbelow, an., outstandingA bead carried by the rear marginalportiom of the clamping member to provideJ a, ful-Crum upon which said member may rock and an! upstanding flange extending along the. central portion of the clamping member to provide. means for rocking the clamping member against the tension, of the tensioning element, said tensioning element being in direct engagementwith said upstanding ange 6 A holding clip for a writing board comprising two members, one of said members constituting a clamping element and the other a tensioning; element, the clamping element comprisingV an clone gated body, an outstanding bead carriedby the rear longitudinal marginal portion of the body to provide a fulcrum upon which said body may-rock, and an upstanding flange extending along the body at the central partV thereof tov provide means for rocking thev same on the bead, the tensioning element comprising a longitudinally split tubular member, one longitudinal marginal portion en gaging the flange of the clamping member and the opposed marginal portion of the tensioning member to engage the board from below, the rear face of the ange of the clamping member being provided with a slot `in which is receivedv .the coacting marginall portion of the tensioning member.
