' 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in plows and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an attachment for preventing the accumulation of sweet clover, trash, weeds, etc., on the implement.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a plow attachment of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, looking at one side of a plow equipped with an attachment constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational opposite side thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a detail view. in vertical section through the substantially conical roller.
Figure 5 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the bracket on which the conical roller is mounted.
Figure '7 is a detail view in perspective of the knife.
Figure 8 is a view in vertical section through the cleaning wheel.
Figure 9 is a detail view in perspective of the land side of the plow.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral l designates a suitable beam having depending therefrom a stock 2. Mounted on the stock 2 is a plow 3. The plow 3 includes a share 4, a land side 5, a moldboard 3, etc.
Mounted on the front portion of the land side of the plow 3 is an upstanding angular knife I. The front of the knife 1 is formed to provide an inclined cutting edge 8.
Mounted on the stock 2 is a metallic bracket 9. The bracket 9 includes an inclined metallic bar 10 having its upper end portion secured to the land side of the stock 2. On the lower end of the bar I0 is a horizontally extending foot H. Depending from the forward portion of the foot II is a fork 12 which straddles the knife I.
view looking at the Projecting from the upper portion of the bar 10 is an arm l3.
Extending between the arm l3 and the foot II is a rod l4 in the form of an elongated bolt. The members 13 and I l are provided with openings I5 which accommodate the rod or shaft l4. Rotatably mounted on the rod or shaft i4 is a substantially conical roller I6 constituting what may be considered a rotary fender. The roller I6 is hollow for the reception of a suitable lubricant. Threaded into the end portions of the conical roller l6 are closure plugs l1 which are journaled on the rod or shaft [4. Rising from the front portion of the foot I l is a shield l8 for preventing weeds, trash, etc., from getting between the lower end of the roller 16 and said foot ll.
Pivotally mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane on the rear portion of the beam 1 and extending laterally and then rearwardly 0n the land side thereof is an angular metallic bar [9.
Also mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane on the beam l and projecting rearwardly therefrom is a metallic rod 29. The rod 20 and the bar l9 pivot on a bolt or pin 22 in the beam I. An eye 2| on the rod 20 is journaled on the bolt 22. The rod 29 further includes a right angularly turned rear end portion constituting a spindle or the like 23 which extends through the rear end portion of the bar is and which is secured therein by a nut 24.
The spindle 23 passes through the hub 25 of a disk wheel 26. Radiating from the periphery of the disk wheel 26 at spaced points are alternating toothed spade and spike type lugs 21. The lugs 21 include bifurcations 29 which straddle the disk wheel 26 and which are secured thereto by bolts or rivets 29. Further, the lugs 21 seat in notches or recesses 30 which are provided therefor in the periphery of the disk wheel 26.
Mounted on the upper portion of the stock 2 is a vertical tube 3|. Adjustably secured by a set screw 32 in the tube 3| is a metallic rod 33 constituting a stop engageable beneath the bar 19 for positively limiting the downward swinging movement of the wheel 25 when the plow is raised out of the ground.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the sweet clover, weeds, etc., which are not cut by the knife 1 engage the conical, inclined roller l6 and most of them are deflected thereby to be plowed under. Any
weeds, clover, etc. which may accummulate or wrap around the roller I6 will trail therefrom on the land side of the plow and the lug equipped wheel 26 will run thereon for pulling them off. It will thus be seen that fouling of the plow by sweet clover, trash, weeds, etc., is prevented. The construction and arrangement is such that the attachment may be expeditiously mounted for operation on conventional moldboard bottoms without thenecessity of, making material structural alterations therein. A metallic; plate; 34.
rigidly secures the lower portion of the bar ID of the bracket 9 to the stock 2.
It is believed that the many advantages of a plow attachment constructed in accordancetwit-h; the present invention will be readily understood. and although a preferred embodiment ofsaid* attachment is as illustratedmtldidesoribed; itissto;
be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination andarrangement ofrpartsmay-be; resorted, to whichwill fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a plow including a beam, a stock depending from the beam and a moldboard bottom mounted on said stock, of a pair of members. pivotally mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane on the beam and extending rearwardly therefrom adjacent the landside of the plow, one. Qfsaidmembers terminating in; a right ang ularly extending rear end portion secured to the other member and constituting a spindle, a disk wheel journaled on said spindle, said wheel having circumferentially spaced, notches in its periphery, toothed lugs radiating. from the wheel and engaged in the notches, said lugs including bifurcations straddling thewhee1,.,and,means securing said bifurcations to said wheel.
