Description

Feb. 16, 1943. B. STREZOFF BRACKET FOR GRINDING WHEELS Filed Jan. 22, 1942 Patented Feb. 16, 1943 SETES FATE? 2 Claims.
I This invention relates to sharpening devices.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a device for sharpening instruments such as knives and scissors, wherein a conventional rotary grinder or sharpener is utilized in conjunction with a. specially devised supporting bracket for holding the grinder and also for supporting the wort. holder.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a supporting bracket for a conventional grinder with an adjustable work holder on the bracket wherein the grinder includes an attaching clamp adapted to secure it to a bracket and hold the adjustable work holder in any one of a number of various adjusted positions.
A further object of the inventionis to provide a bracket with a. work'holder thereonand a grinder detachably securable to the bracket wherein the work holder is adjustable toward and away from the bracket as well as being adjustable angularly thereto.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the views, and, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
In the drawing there is shown a portion of a table shelf or other stationary support 3, A bracket B is provided with an inner end l which is adapted to overlie the support 3, The central portion of the bracket 13 is provided with a cutout 5 and the tongue 6 formed by said cut-out is bent downwardly and its portion Bobent inwardly parallel to the bracket portion 65 in spaced relation thereto. The bracket portion to has a clamping bolt 1 threaded therethrough with a v swlveled end member 3 to permit the bracket to be tightly secured to the support 3, as shown.-
A pair of arms 9 extend outwardly beside the central cut-out 5 and are connected at their outer or left-hand ends by a horizontal cross member ID. The horizontal cross member Id at its outer or left-hand edge is provided with an upturned portion I! having a series of vertically disposed teeth I: formed on its outer face. Positioned centrally of the cross member Ill is a vertically disposed threaded post l3 upon which a sleeve M is threaded, said sleeve Ht being vertically adjustable by rotation thereof on the threaded post l3. Mounted on the top of the vertical sleeve I4 is a horizontally disposed split sleeve which threadedly receives an externally threaded member l5 having connected thereto a work holder H. The split sleeve l5 has a pair of upwardly extending lips l8 carrying a clamping screw l9 adapted to tighten said split sleeve I5 about the externally threaded member Hi.
There is shown a conventional grinding tool T having a body it! rotatalcly supporting a grinding wheel 2! driven by suitable gearing from a rotary crank 22. The grinding tool body 20 has a. pair of substantially vertically disposed lugs 23 thereon whose right-han'civertical edges are adapted to engage the teeth E2 on the upstanding flange ll of the "bracket cross member Id. An angular tongue 25 extends rearwardly or to the right from the grinding tool body 2d and the upstanding portion of said tongue 2% threadedly supports a clamping screw 25 having a clamping element 26 pivoted on its left-hand or inner end. When the grinding tool T is placed in the position shown with the lugs 23 engaging the teeth I! on the bracket portion ii and the clamping screw 25 is screwed to ,the left the clamping element 26 on said screw 25 will engage the vertically disposed internally threaded sleeve M on the externally threaded member l3, and the lugs 23 will be brought into firm engagement with the teeth IE on .the bracket cross member portion H. This clamping action not only supports the grinding tool with its wheel 2| in proper relative position to the work holder H, but it clamps the relatively movable threaded members l3 and I l against movement In the position illustrated the work holder I1 loosened to permit the vertically disposed sleeve M to be screwed down on the externally threaded member [3 thus lowering the work holder l1. When the holder H has been lowered to the desired position the clamping screw 25 is again I tightened against the sleeve 14. The split sleeve l5 can be loosened by manipulation of screw I! so that-the work holder it can be oscillated about its longitudinal axis'to bring alternate sides of the edge of a knife blade into engage ment with the grind stone 2!.
From the foregoing description it .will be seen that I have provided a sharpening device which utilizes a conventional type or grinding tool and a bracket to which the grinding tool can be detachably secured. When secured to the bracket the grinding tool can be utilized to sharpen instruments such as scissors and knife blades and said grinding tool can be quickly detached from the bracket so that it may be utilized independently for any other uses to which it might be put.
It will, oi-course, beunderstood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of my invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device oi! the class described, a bracket having an abutment thereon to engage the frame of a tool such asa hand grinder having a screw clamp thereon, a threaded post on said bracket adjacent said abutment opposite to that side or said abutment engaged by said grinder frame, a worksupporting sleeve threaded on said post 5 and engageable by the screw 0! said clamp to clamp said grinder to said bracket to lock said sleeve against rotation on said post.
2;. The structure in claim 1 and said sleeve having a split collar thereon having an internal 1o thread and lying at right-angles to the axis 01' 5 sleeve on said threaded work clamping device portion.
