Abstract
810,183. Pencil sharpeners. DAHLE, W., [trading as DAHLE, W. [Firm of]]. July 8, 1957 [July 10, 1956], No. 21634/57. Class 146(3) A machine for sharppening pencil leads in adjustable lead holders has a housing consisting of two parts 1, 2 rotatable in relation to each other wherein the part 2 has a channel 6 in an eccentric position into which a lead 8 may be inserted and a milling cutter 3 laterally adjacent to the inner end of said channel and driven, when the parts are relatively rotated, by gearing comprising one internally toothed gear wheel 11 secured to the part 1 and another gear wheel 9 secured to the cutter. The parts 1, 2 are fastened together by a bolt 13 passing through tubular portions formed centrally on the inner sides of parts 1, 2 respectively and engaged by a nut where it projects beyond the part 2. The cutter 3 is rotatably mounted on a bolt 5 carried by an inner extension 4 of the housing part 2 in which the channel 6 is also formed, the axis of the cutter being inclined at an angle to the axis of the channel. The lead holder is inserted in a tubular extension 7 of the channel 6 so that the lead engages the cutter, and the holder is used as a crank to rotate the part 2 of the housing in relation to the part 1, the gearing 9, 11 causing the cutter to rotate and sharpen the lead. To accommodate lead holders of different diameters adapters such as 26 may'be fitted on the tubular extension 7. Sockets 19, 20 are formed in the part 2 to ensure that the correct amount of lead is exposed from the lead holder before the sharpening operation: the lead holder is rested on the outer edge of a socket and the lead is fed downwards e.g. by depression on the feed knob, until it engages the bottom of the socket. Apertures 23 are provided in the part 1 for inserting clamps to secure the machine to a table. Alternatively or additionally a sheet 24 of material such as rubber, having a high coefficient of friction may be fastened to the underside of the part 1 to keep that part stationary on the table. In a modification the machine may be secured to a heavy base which has a sheet similar to 24 on its underside, and in place of the sockets 19, 20 suitable grooves may be provided on the outside of the tubular extension 7.
