10 Claims.
The invention relates to dispensing devices for beverages, and has for its object to provide a device of this character for eliminating the foaming of the beverage as it is dispensed, and to provide -means whereby a pre-determined amount of foaming may be allowed if desired.
A further object is to provide a foam regulating and preventing device particularly adapted for use in connection with alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages under high pressure and drawn from a container.
A further object is to provide a foam preventing beverage dispensing device having a high pressure chamber into which beverage from a container is discharged in regulated amounts, a low or no pressure chamber into which the beverage passes from the high pressure chamber through a valve controlled opening, a discharge valve for controlling the dispensing of the beverage from the low pressure chamber and valve controlled means for closing the flow from the high pressure chamber to the low pressure chamber, after the low pressure chamber is cut off from the high pressure chamber, and opening the discharge valve for dispensing purposes.
A further object is to provide a valve controlled by-pass between the high pressure chamber and the dispensing tube whereby high pressure uid or gas may be supplied to the dispensed liquid from the high pressure chamber for causing said dispensed liquid to be foamed a predetermined amount.
A further object is to provide a valve controlled by-pass between the high pressure chamber and the low pressure chamber for the passage of liquid to the low pressure chamber for the dispensing operation from the low pressure chamber.
A further object is to provide a non-foaming beverage dispensing device which is compact, may be readily disassembled for cleaning and repair purposes and one which may be disposed in an insulating casing or may be positioned in a cooling fluid or material.
A further object is to provide a single lever control for the dispensing operation and constructed in a manner whereby a dispensing operation is accomplished lby movement of the lever in one direction and a foaming operation when the lever is moved in the opposite direction.
With the above and other objects in View the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, `described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates the high pressure casing and 2 the low or reduced pressure casing. The high pressure casing I is provided with high pressure chamber 3 into which liquid, to be dispensed, is discharged from any suitable container, not shown, to a pipe 4. The liquid is under high pressure. The liquid passes through the port 5 -and past the disc valve B controlled by the regulating valve 'I. The pressure responsive device 1 is of a bellows type 8, and is provided with an adjusting screw 9 for regulating the amount of pressure necessary for allowing the valve 6 to open under the pressure of the fluid through the supply pipe 4, therefore it will be seen that an intermittent supply of liquid'will pass to the high pressure chamber 3, and a predetermined liquid level is maintained therein. The casing I is mounted on an intermediate casing IQ having a by-pass port II 4which communicates with a bypass port I2 through'a valve controlled port I3.
The fluid passes from the by-pass port I2 into the low pressure chamber I4 in the low pressure casing 2.
The port I3 is controlled by a disc valve I5, normally slightly open until the dispensing operation is started, but closed at the starting of a dispensing operation. It will be seen that the liquid will flow into the 10W pressure chamber Il! yat all times except during a dispensing operation. During the dispensing operation the beverage in the low pressure chamber Il?. will pass upwardly through the draw .pipe I6, which iscarried by the intermediate casing IQ, and into the port I'I; thence through the valve controlled port I8 controlled by the dispensing Valve I9, and thence laterally through 4the port 2U to the dispensing tube 2l. It will be noted that the disc valve I5 is slightly open, and maintained in this .position by the expansive forces of the bellows 22 and the expansion spring 23. Valve I5 is provided with a valve stem 24 which extends into the chamber 25 of the extension housing 2S through a plate 21 and terminates adjacent a downwardly extending hinged valve .controlled member 28. The hinged control member 23, when swung inwardly at the starting of .a dispensing operation, moves the valve stem 24 axially closes the disc valve I5 against the expansive action of spring 23, thereby cutting 01T the high pressure chamber from the low pressure chamber with the exception of the beverage under pressure passing through the by-pass Vpipe 29 and pressure control valve 3D. It will be seen that the reduced pressure passing through regulating valve 30 will be utilized as a sole means foil forcing the liquid from the low pressure chamber I4 through tube .I5 as the valve I5 previously closed has cut oi the'flow of high pressure chamber 3. By adjusting the valve .3D the amount of pressure in the low pressure chamber :I4.rnay be regulated, thereby allowing the dispensing of liquid from the low pressure .chamber free of foam if desired.
The continued movement inwardly of the valve actuating member 28 allows the end 3I of the push rod 32 to engage the end of the valve rod 33 and to Yunseat the valve IS, thereby allowing the dispensing of liquid from the low pressure chamber I4 through .ports I1, I8, 2!) and the dispensing tube 2l.. Thepush rod 32 is hingedly Vconnected at34 to a control lever 35 which is in turn hingedly mounted vat 36.
When the control lever 35 is in the lposition B, Figure 2, the valve 9 is in closed position and the disc valve I5 is in open position as shown in Figure 1, allowing liquid to pass to low pressure chamber I4. When it is desired Vto dispense the beverage the lever 35 is moved to position A, Figure 2, and this imparts an axial movement on the :push rod 32 against the expansion spring 31, thereby rocking the lever 28 for closing the valve I5 and cutting off the communication between chambers 3 and I4. The further movement of the push rod 32 inwardly compresses the expansion spring 31 and allows the 'push rod to slide through the lever 28 incident to the slot and pin connection 38 and 39, therefore it will be seen that the push rod will engage the valve stem S3 `and unseat the valve i9 aga-inst the expansion spring 40.
When the lever 35 is released or moved to position B, the expansion spring 3'.' will return the push `rod to normal position and the expansion spring 40, surrounding the valve stem 33, will again close the valve L9.
-It has been found desirable at times to foam the dispensed beverage and to accomplish this result the control lever 35 is moved towards the position C, 'Figure `2, and this will impart a pull on the push rod 32 and swing the lower end of the control lever 2S outwardly, thereby imparting a pull on the headed valve stern il Figures 5 and 6, open `the needle valve 42 against the action of the spring 4.3. This will allow the passage of pressure from ,the top .of the high ypressure chamber 3 through the pipe 44 and thence laterally through the port 5 to the dispensing tube 2i. During this operation the valve i5 is open and valve I9 closed. Valve 42 is maintained closed by the spring 43 during normal dispensing operations. When tne lever 35 .is released, following the foaming operation, it is forced to normal inoperative position ready for a dispensing operation by the expansion spring 43. Ports 20 and 45 merge into each other and both discharge into the dispensing tube 2l as clearly shown in dotted lines in Figure 5.
Casings I and 2 are provided with hns 46 to facilitate heat radiation and the cooling operation and it will vbe seen that valve 3D can be regulated for controlling the flow from the high to the low pressure chamber and a predetermined low pressure utilized for dispensing the liquid from the low pressure chamber I4 thereby obviating foaming.
The rentire device may be disposed in an ice bed or within a cooling coil if so desired, and the dispensing faucet may extend through the wall of a cooling tank as shown.
From the above it will be seen that a beverage dispensing device is provided which will reduce rfoaming to a minimum, particularly where a high pressure beverage is used and means provided whereby any amount of foaming Vdesired may be obtained.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
l. A beverage dispensing device comprising a casing having a high pressure beverage chamber, a casing having a low pressure beverage chamber, a normally open valve disposed in a 'passage of communication between the high pressure chamber and the low pressure chamber, spring means for maintaining sai-d normally open valve open, a normally closed discharge valve through which the beverage in the low pressure chamber is discharged, operating means cooperating with said normally open valve whereby the normally open valve is closed upon starting of a dispensing operation and the dispensing valve is opened and means for supplying reduced pressure into the low pressure chamber during the dispensing operation.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means for supplying the reduced pressure comprises a by-pass connection between the high pressure chamber and the low pressure chamber for supplying pres-sure to the low pressure chamoer Vfor forcing the liquid therefrom and means for regulating the pressure iiow through said bypass connection.
3. A device as set forth -in claim 1 wherein the normally open valve is interposed between spring means comprising bellows on opposite sides of the valve and an expansion spring within one of the bellows and cooperating with the valve.
4. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means for supplying the reduced pressure to the low pressure chamber and foaming the dispensed beverage comprises a by-pass connection between the bottom of the high pressure chamber and the low pressure chamber, a second by-pass member extending upwardly into the high pressure chamber and valve means in connection with said second ley-pass member and forming means whereby pressure from the top of the high pressure chamber vmay be utilized for foaming dispensed beverages during or after a dispensing operation from the low pressure chamber.
5. A device as set forth in claim 1 including valve stems carried by said normally open valve and the dispensing valve and extending through `a wall of one of the casings, a hinged arm in the path of said valve stems, a push rod for rocking said hinged arm, said push rod having a lost motion connection to said hinged arm whereby the normally open valve will be closed upon initial movement of the hinged arm and the dispensing valve will be opened by the push rod incident to the lost motion connection thereof to the hinged arm.
6. A device as set forth in claim 1 including a foam by-pass connection between the high pressure chamber and the point of discharge and terminating in a valve port, a control valve for said last named port, a dispensing tube connected to said port and lever means for controlling all of said valves for a beverage dispensing operation and a foaming operation.
'7. rThe combination with a beverage dispensing device for high pressure beverages comprising a high pressure chamber, a low pressure chamber, a normally open valve controlling the ow of liquid from the high pressure to the low pressure chamber, an outwardly extending valve rod carried by said valve, a dispensing valve for controlling the discharge of liquid from the low pressure chamber, a valve stem carried by said dispensing valve and extending outwardly, means for closing the normally open valve and opening the dispensing Valve at the starting of a dispensing operation, said means comprising a downwardly extending hinged arm in the path of both of said stems, means for forcing said arm towards the valve stems for closing the normally open valve and opening the dispensing valve.
8. A device as set forth in claim 7 including a lost motion connection between the hinged arm and the push rod and allowing continued axial movement of the push rod and dispensing valve stem when the inward movement of the hinged arm is stopped by the stopping of the normally open valve When it reaches its closed position.
9. A device as set forth in claim 7 including a foam creating by-pass connection between the high pressure chamber, an axially movable control Valve for said foam bypass connection, said axially movable control valve being normally closed when the hinged arm is swung inwardly for a dispensing operation and opened upon a reverse rocking of the hinged arm.
1G. A device as set forth in claim 7 including a pressure by-pass pipe between the high pressure chamber and a port to the outside of the dispensing valve and into which the dispensing valve discharges, a dispensing tube connected to said port, said high pressure pipe connection having an axially movable normally spring closed valve, said normally closed valve having a valve stem extending through the hinged arm and adapted to be pulled outwardly by the hinged arm upon a reverse swinging of the hinged arm.
