marins, vunfn UNITED STATES PATENT OEFTCE.
EDWARD A. SMITH, OF GREELEY, COLORADO.
EARTH-AUGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,830, elated August 3, 1880.
Application filed May 5, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SMITH, of Greeley, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vell-Augers, of which the following is a specification.
y invention consists in a novel construction, arrangement, and combination of tl1e casing, the cutter, and the drill-point in a wellanger, whereby several advantages are obtained, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional View, showing my invention in working position in the ground. Fig. 2 is a section taken in the line x x of Fig. l, showing the cutter in one position. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the cutter in another position. Fig. et is a detail view of the cutter.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a cylindrical casing, having its top entirely open and its bottom halfopenthat is to say, the bottom ot' the casing is provided with a selnicircular plate which closes half of it, whilel the other half is entirely open.
The upper end of the cylindrical casing is provided with a skeleton frame, B, through which and through the semicireular bottom plate works a vertical shaft, O. A collar, D, provided with a set-screw,'c, fits on the shaft O and rests on the top of the frame B, and thus prer'ents the shaft from sliding, but at the saine time allows it to turn freely.
The lower end of the shaft O is of drill form, instead of being conical and pointed, and thus the friction is lessened.
To the lower portion of the shaft Gis attached the cutter, which consists of a semicircular plate, F, with a cuttin g-blade, G, formed in one piece therewith. The upper side of the plate F is provided with a vertical stud, h, which engages with the radial edge of the semicircular bottom plate of the casing, and
thus limits the play of the cutter to half a revolution.
The parts being in the position shown in Fig. l, the auger is rotated in the same manner as an ordinary auger. When the casing becomes full the shaft C is reversed to the extent of half a revolution. This places the plate F in such a position as to entirely close the bottom of the casing and allow it, with its contents, to be raised up from the bore.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I In a well-auger, the combination of a vibrating auger-shaft, C, the stationary box A, open at top and halt open at bottom, the skeleton frame B, attached to said case, and the semicircular plate F, made fast to shaft, carrying stud h, and provided with blade G, as shown and described, whereby the earth is removed by simply raising the frame with case and allowing it to discharge at bottom.
EDWARD AL. SMITH.
