UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..v
GEORGE QUINTON, OF LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE.
HALF OF H IS RIGHT TO JAMES MCCOUBREY, OF SAME'PLAOE.
SOLDERlNG-IRON HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,655, dated August 3, 1880.
' Application filed June 10, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE QUINTON, of the city of London, in the county of Middle sex and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Soldering-Iron Heaters, of which the following' is a full, clear, and exact-description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a View ofthe grate with shaker and damper attachment. l
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in soldering-iron heaters; and the invention consists in the general construction and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically' pointed out in the claim.
vA is the outer case, made preferably of sheetiron. All the other parts will usually be made of cast-iron.
B is the Well, made detachable and lifting out at top. Charcoal will generally be the fuel used, and this will fill up the well to the top.
U is an apron, the ends of which are attached to each side of opening D. E is a pipe communicating from case A into pipe F. This pipe may be. closed or regulated by the damper G. At the bottom of the case A is placed a grate, H, constructed as shown at Fig. S-that is, with a shaker attachment, I J.
K is the ash-box or base, and L an ash-pan fitting in the same. The bottom of ilue F opens into the base behind the grate, and when a moderate steady tire is required the damper G Will be closed, the grate H opened, and then the draft will be through D, down through grate H, and up the flue F, acting as a baseburner. When a hotter tire is required, the grate H will be closed, the damper G left open, 4o and a direct draft is then obtained from D to horizontal pipe E.
The result of this arrangement, in combination With a tire-pot, is that athorough draft is obtained, all smoke and black coal are prevented from comingin contact with the irons, Ste., and the ash is easily removed. A great heat is obtained, and the quantity of fuel used is less than in ordinary fire-pots.
M is an inner case' of cast-iron, to be placed 5o inside the outer case, A, and extending from the bottom to the lower edge of well B. This inner case, M, is removable, and can be replaced when burned out. It is intended to protect the thinner sides of the outer case, A, in the part most exposed to the action of the nre.
Iam aware that a solderin giron heater having the combustion-flue communicating both with the ash-pit below the re and also through a pipe above the re, is old; and such I do not 6o desire to be understood as claiming, broadly, as of my invention but I claim-as my invention- The herein-described soldering-iron heater consisting of the outer case, A, provided with the detachable Well B, opening D, and apron O, pipe E, provided with damper G, `flue or pipe F, base or ash-pit K, and grate H, provided with a shaker and damper attachment,
I J, the several parts constructed and rela- 7o tively arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
