Description

Dec. 22, 1942. A. H. GRAHAM EARTH BORING DEVICE Her/fue 6467094447 INVENTOR O Y i.
Filed March 20, 1941 Patented Dec. 22, 1942 UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention has to do with devices for -boring holes into the earth and particularly with those devices for boring holes to relatively shallow depths through relatively soft and/or unat intervals along shaft I, as shown, or contin- 110115.
I claim: 1
l. A boring head for earth boring implements consolidated material, such as wells, holes for 5 COmDriSing a Casing, in Said Casing a shaft, an
placing shots for geophysical prospecting for oil, holes for examining the now of gases in the soil, for obtaining samples of the soil at variable depths below the surface, and the like.
The invention has for its object the provision of a boring device of auger type combined with a casing and a boring removing means.
The device is shown in the single ngure of the drawing attached to this specification and comprises a central shaft I, surrounded by a casing 2. 'I'his central shaft I is provided at this lower end with a cutting auger composed of lead screw 3, external cutting night l and a removal night 5. 'I'he lower end of the shaft and the auger are supported in the casing by a bearing 1 and a spider composed of several members 8, 8. 'I'he external cutting night l is of a diameter at least equal to the external diameter of the casing 2, and the heel of this cutting night I is of such a diameter at the point 9 that it contacts with and is supported by bearingI 1. 'Ihe external diameter of the night 5 is such that it is prevented from radial movement by engaging with the spider members 8 which hold it centered within the casing. On shaft I upwardly of night 5 there are conveyor nights I0 forthe purpose of moving borings upwardly. These nights I! are preferably of a pitch different from that of nights 5, and may be either sectional and spaced auger mounted upon the lower end of said shaft having a cutting night extending axially beyond said casing and having a diameter at least as great as the external diameter of said casing, rearward flights of said auger within said casing being of less diameter than the internal diameter of said casing and bearing means internal of said casing adjacent its end to cooperate with the peripheral edge of said rearward nights to hold the shaft and auger centered in said casing, and conveyor nights greater in diameter than said rearward nights and having a pitch different` from the rearward nights to facilitate removal of cuttings produced by the rotation of the auger. 2. A boring head for earth boring implements comprising a casing, in said casing-a shaft, an auger mounted upon the lower end of said shaft having a cutting night extending axially beyond said casing and having a diameter at least as great as the external diameter of said casing, rearward nights of said auger within said casing being of less diameter than the internal diameter of said casing and bearing means internal of said casing adjacent its end to cooperate with the peripheral edge of said rearward nights to hold the shaft and auger centered in said casing, and conveyor nights greater in diameter than said rearward nightsto facilitate removal of cuttings produced by the rotation of the auger.
