SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ,of Letters Patent No. 230,020, dated July 13, 1880. Application filed March 24, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK JAooB, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a novel mechanism for operating the feed-dog and the shuttlecarrier of a sewing-machine, and the construction and arrangement of the same will be fully hereinafter described in detail.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represen ts a sectional side view of a sewin g-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane a; 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar section in the plane y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the oblique cylinder and the fork.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the main shaft of a sewing-machine, which has its bearings in a bracket-arm, O, rising from'the cloth-plate B,and serves to impart to the needleslide the required reciprocating motion. On the shaft A is firmly mounted an oblique cylinder, D, which serves to impart an oscillating motion to the vertical rock-shaft E. For this purpose said rock-shaft is provided at its upper end with a fork which consists of two broad tines, a a, bearing close upon the opposite sides of the oblique cylinder D. In this cylinder is formed a circular groove, 1), which is situated in a plane at right angles to the main shaft A, and between the tines a a rises a pin, 0, (see Fig. 5,) which engages with the groove b and retains the rock-shaft E in its vertical position. The foot of this vertical rock-shaft turns in a hole in the cloth-plate, and extends through this hole far enough to receive an arm, F, and a lever, Gr, to which latter is affixed the shuttle-carrier H.
The arm F is firmly connected to the rockshaft, and it is connected to the lever G at about the middle of said lever by means of a pivot, d, while said lever turns loosely on the bottom end of the rook-shaft.
In the lever Gr, near to the rock-shaft E, is secured a pin, 6, which engages with a slot, f,
in the feed-lever I. This lever is situated beneath the cloth-plate, and it has its fulcrum on a pivot, g, which can move in a slot, h, for the purpose of adjusting the length of the said feed-lever, serving,in connection with a spring, to impart to the feed-dog the well-known four motions, viz: up, forward, down, and backward.
By the action of the pin 0 and slot f the feed-lever is moved backward and forward, whereby the up-and-down motion of the feeddog is produced, as will be presently more fully explained. An oscillating motion is im-' parted to the feed-lever I by means ofa lever, J, which has its fulcrum on a pivot, z, Figs. 1 and 3, and is provided at its upper end with a fork, j, that straddles an eccentric, k, on the main shaft A, so that when-this shaft is rotated a vibrating motion is imparted to the lever J. The lower end of this lever engages with a slot, Z, in the feed-lever I, so as to impart to the same the desired oscillating motion, whereby the feed-dog is moved backward and forward.
For the purpose of moving the feed-dog up and down, the feed-lever is provided with an inclined plane, m, and is held up against the lower side of the feed-dog K by a guide-plate, a, which is secured to the under surface of the cloth-plate. A spring, 0, retains the lower side of the feed-dog in contact with the feedlever, said lowerside being provided with a recess which hugs the edges of the feed-lever.
When the feed-lever is drawn back by the action of the pin 6 on the slotf, the inclined plane m, as it acts on the lower side of the feed-dog, forces the latter up, and when the feed-lever has reached the position shown in Fig. 1 it is caused to swing forward by the action of the lever J, and thereby a forward motion is imparted to the feed-dog. After this motion has been completed the feed-lever is moved forward by the pin 0 acting on the slot f, and the lower side of the feed-dog rides down on the inclined plane m, being held in contact therewith by the spring 0, so that the face of the feed-dog drops below the surface of the cloth-plate, and then abackward motion is imparted to the feed-dog by the action of 100 the lever J on the feed-lever.
By the action of the oblique cylinder on the vertical rock-shaft,and by the arm F, which connects this rock-shaft with the shuttle-lever, I am enabled to impart to the shuttle a very rapid motion without noise and without producin g any appreciable jar or vibration in the sewing-machine, and-by the addition of the eccentric 7c and lever J the required motions are imparted to the feed-dog in a simple and efl'ective manner.
I do not claim as new in this application the oblique cylinder and the vertical rock-shaft on which is firmly mounted an armwhich carries the shuttle-carrier, such beingdescribed in Patent No. 190,047, granted to me April 24;, 187 7 What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a sewing-machine, of an eccentric firmly mounted on the main shaft, a lever which receives a vibratory motion by the action of the eccentric, a feed-lever acted on by the vibratory lever, a feed-dog connected with the feed-lever, an oblique cylinder which is firmly mounted on the main shaft, a vertical rock-shaft provided with a fork which embraces the oblique cylinder, a shuttle-lever loosely mounted on the rock-shaft and having a pin engaging with the feed-lever, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
The combination, in a sewing-machine, of a main shaft, an oblique cylinder, and an cecentric, both being firmly mounted on said main shaft, a vertical rock-shaft provided with a fork which straddles the oblique cylinder, a shuttle-lever which is connected to the vertical rock-shaft, a pin secured in said shuttle-lever,
afeed-lever having slots f and l, with one of which said pin en gages, a vibrating lever which receives its motion from the eccentric mounted on the main shaft and the lower end of which engages with the slot l in the feed-lever, and a feed-dog connected with the latter, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the main shaft A, oblique cylinder D, eccentric k, vertical rockshaft E, vibratory lever J, the arm F, mounted on and receiving motion from the rock-shaft, the shuttle-lever G, having a pin, 6, the feedlever I, having an incline, m, and the slots f and l, engaging the pin 0 and the end of the vibratory lever, the feed-dog K, and the spring 0, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
