This invention relates to distributing apparatus and more particularly to apparatus for distrlbuting cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple and efficient distributing apparatus.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention as applied to a rotary lapping disc rotatable in a horizontal plane, a trough is provided around the circumference of the lapping disc to receive compound thrown or flowing off of the cutting face of the disc and a disc-like member disposed at an angle to the horizontal plane rides in the trough and is driven by the base of the trough during its rotation. The disc-like member is provided with a plurality of rubber rings which are positioned in notches about the periphery of the disc-like member and extend therefrom to serve the double purpose of providing a traction surface to insure the rotation of the disc-like member and also to provide grooves between them which will tend to pick up compound from the trough and carry it with the disc-like member. The disc-like member is freely rotatable in a bearing which also supports a partially cone-shaped cover for directing the compound onto the surface of the lapping disc. The bearing is pivotally mounted in such a manner that the disc-like member will rest in the trough surrounding the lapping disc and the disc-like member is hollowed to avoid striking the edge of the lapping disc. Positioned on the end of the housing is a rubber wiper, which bears against the upper surface of the lapping disc to distribute the compound dripping down the cover more evenly over the surface of the lapping disc. This rubber wiper is not sufficiently strong to hold the cover 01f of the lapping disc but the entire disc-like member, cover and its bearing are supported by the rubber rings at the edge of the disc-like member engaging in the trough which surrounds the lapping disc and a pivot outside the periphery of the trough,
A better understanding of the invention will be had by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a lapping apparatus including the improved distributing apparatus covered by the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, part being broken away to conserve space; and
'Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view, partially in section, and on an enlarged scale, showing the details of the disc-like member and its support.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate the same parts throughout the several views, particular reference being had at this time to Fig. 1, wherein there is shown a standard Ill. which may be of any suitable construction and through which there extends a drive shaft H. The drive shaft ll may be driven by any suitable driving mechanism (not shown) and drives a lapping disc l2 which has a hub member l3 in which there is, in turn, positioned a pin M for interconnecting the shaft H and the disc l2. Mounted on the upper end of the standard ID is a hollow circular housing I5, to which a bracket supporting plate It is fixed by means of screws |l--ll. The plate H5 carries at its extremity a bracket, designated generally by the numeral 18, and composed of a pair of arms 19 and 20 interconnected by -a base plate 2i and by a side plate 22 to render them more rigid. The bracket l8 is secured to the supporting plate l6 by means of screws 23-23 and carries at its upper end a pivot pin 24. I
Pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 24 are a pair of arms and 3!, which are bent toward each other and have their left ends (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) secured to a pair of webs 32 and 33, respectively. The arms 39 and 3| are interconnected adjacent their left ends (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) by a plate 34. The Webs 32 and 33 and a third web are welded to a bearing member 353 and carry an apertured cover plate 31, which is suitably secured to them, for example, by welding. Also secured to the cover plate 31 and to the plate 34 is a short reinforcing web 38. Thus, by means of the webs 32, 33, 35 and 38, the cover plate 31 is rigidly interconnected with the bearing 35. and the assembly is mounted on the ends of the arms 30 and 3|.
Secured about the peripheral edge of the cover plate 31 throughout its circumference, except at the straight portion thereof, as shown at 39, is a partially conical cover member All, which has extending from it a series of posts 4!, 42, 43, 44 and 45. These posts ll, 42, 43, 44 and 45 are threaded to receive machine screws 46, 41, 48, 49 and 59, respectively, and which, in turn. serve to hold a soft rubber wiper .653 between a'pair of plates 5| and 52 suitably apertured to receive the screws 46 to 50, inclusive. The plates 6| and 62 will hold the soft rubber Wiper in position,
where it will engage the top or grinding surface of the lapping disc l2,
Fixed to the under side of the lapping disc l2, by means of screws 6363, is an annular member 64, which extends outwardly beyond the edge of the lapping disc I2 and carries at its outer edge a vertically extending circular wall member 65. The circular wall member 65, the annular member 64 and the outer peripheral surface of the lapping disc l2 form a circular trough extending completely around the lapping disc l2 into which compound poured on the surface of the lapping disc will be thrown by centrifugal force or will run if a liquid compound is used.
Supported in the bearing member 36 is a shaft 66, which is held in place in the bearing member by a collar 61, pinned to it by means of a pin 68 and by a flange member 69, which is also pinned to it by means of a pin Hi. There is fixed to the flange member 69, by means of screws ll-ll, a cupped disc-like member 12. This disc-like member l2 has a beveled edge so that on its outer surface the disc-like member f2 constitutes a short truncated cone hollowed out to provide its cupped construction, The angle at which the periphery of the disc-like member i2 is beveled is such that a plurality of soft rubber rings 7='M engaged in grooves 75 on the periphery of the member l2 will bear on the annular member fi l during the rotationthereof with the lapping disc !2 By forming the disclike member 12 with a hollowed out center portion to give it its cupped construction, a broader peripheral surface is provided without, however, causing the disc-like member l2 to engage the lapping disc.
In the operation of the apparatus, a supply of grinding compound may be placed on the upper surface of the lapping disc I2 either while the rubber tread or ring "M on the disc-like member 12 is in engagement with the member 64 or while the entire mechanism supported by the arms 39 and M is tilted out of the position shown. After a supply of abrasive compound has been placed on the lapping disc Iii, the mechanism supported by the arms 36 and H may be moved to the position as shown in all of the figures wherethe rubber rings M will bear on the annular member 64. If the lapping disc is driven by the shaft H, the disc-like member 12 will be rotated with it due to the engagement of the rubber rings with the annular member 54, and as compound either flows or is thrown off of the lapping disc IE, it Will be picked up by the periphery of the disclike member if and the rubber rings M and will be carried upwardly and thrown against the cover member all and will drip down from the inner surface thereof. As the lapping disc l2 continues to rotate, the compound, either running down or dripping down from the cover member All, will be spread evenly over the upper surface of the lapping disc by the soft rubber wiper B4 and will materially facilitate the grinding of articles on the lapping disc 62.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been described herein, it will be understood that modifications and adaptations thereof may be made without departing from the invention, which is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A distributing apparatus for distributing compound over the face of a disc comprising a trough surrounding the disc, and a circular compound carrying member positioned to bear in and be driven frictionally by said trough and to extend partially over the working face of the disc.
2. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc comprising a trough surrounding the disc, and a rotatable compound carrying member positioned to bear in said trough and to extent partially over the working face of the disc, said rotatable compound carrying member being rotatable for carrying compound on its periphery from the trough to the Working face of the disc.
3. A distributing apparatus for distributing compound on a lapping disc comprising a trough surrounding and rotatable with the lapping disc, and a disc-lik member bearing in said trough and extending over said lapping disc to carry compound from th trough over the surface of the lapping disc.
4. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound on the face of a lapping disc comprising an annular trough surrounding the cutting disc, a circular member positioned to bear in and be driven frictionally by said trough, said circularmember being positioned to extend partially over the face of the lapping disc, and a partially conical housing surrounding the oircular member to direct the compound from the circular member to the face of the disc.
5. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound on the face of a lapping disc comprising an annular trough surrounding the cutting disc, a circular member positioned to bear in and be driven frictionally by said trough, said circular member being positioned to extend partially over the face of the lapping disc, a partially conical housing surrounding the circular member to direct the compound from the circular member to the face of the disc, and a wiper bearing on the face of the disc and secured to said partially conical housing for spreading the compound on the disc.
6. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lappin disc comprising an annular trough disposed at the periphery of the lapping disc, and a disc-like member having its peripheral edge bearing in said trough and positioned to carry cutting compound on its peripheral edge from said trough to a position above the face of the disc, said disclike member being hollowed to avoid contact with the edge of the lapping disc.
7. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc comprising a trough surrounding th lapping disc and positioned at the periphery thereof, a disclike member having grooves in its periphery and having its central portion hollowed for a predetermined distance, a series of rubber rings positioned in the grooves in the periphery of said disc-like member, and means for pivotally and rotatably supporting said disc-like member in position Where the rings on its periphery bear in the trough.
8. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a grinding disc comprising a trough surrounding the disc and fixed at the periphery thereof, said trough being formed of an annular member fixed to the disc and a ring angularly disposed with respect to said annular member to form, in cooperation with the edge of the disc, a trough, a distributing disc-like member for transferring compound from said trough to position over the face of the disc, and a housing surrounding said disc-like member for directing compound thrown up by the disc-like member over the face of th disc.
9. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a grinding disc comprising a trough surrounding th disc and fixed at the periphery thereof, said trough being formed of an annular member fixed to the disc and a ring annularly disposed with respect to said annular member to form, in cooperation with the edge of the disc, a trough, a distributing disc-like member for transferring compound from said trough to position over the face of the disc, a housing surrounding said disc-like member for directing compound thrown up by the disc-like member over the face of the disc, and a wiper fixed to said housing to spread the compound on the face of the disc.
10. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a grinding disc comprising a trough surrounding the disc and fixed at the periphery thereof, said trough being formed of an annular member fixed to the disc and a ring annularly disposed with respect to said annular member to form, in cooperation with the edge of the disc, a trough, a distributing disc-like member for transferring compound from said trough to position over the face of the disc, a housing surrounding said disc-like memher for directing compound thrown up by the disc-like member over the face of the disc, a wiper fixed to said housing to spread the compound on the face of the disc, and a bearing in said housing for rotatably supporting said disclike member.

A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc comprising a bracket, a housing supported by said bracket, a bearing fixed to said housing, a shaft rotatable in said bearing, a hollowed disce like member carried by said shaft, and a trough formed at the periphery of the rotary lapping disc for receiving and frictionally driving said disc-like member.

A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc comprising a bracket, a housing supported by said bracket, a bearing fixed to said housing, a shaft rotatable in said bearing, a hollowed disclike member carried by said shaft, and a trough formed at the periphery of the rotary lapping disc for receiving and frictionally driving said disc-like member, said disc-like member having a series of resilient frictional members on its periphery to aid in picking up compound in the trough and in driving the disc-like member.
13. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc comprising a bracket, a housing supported by said bracket, a bearing fixed to said housing, a shaft rotatable in said bearing, a hollowed disclike member carried by said shaft, and a trough formed at the periphery of the rotary lapping disc for receiving and frictionally driving said disc-like member, said disc-like member being beveled on its peripheral edge to present a driving surface at the plane of the base surface of the trough.

A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc comprising an annular member secured to and extending radially outwardly from the under side of said lapping disc, a ring intimately connected to said annular member to cooperate with the edge of the lapping disc to form a trough for receiving cutting compound thrown off the lapping disc, a disc-like member having a beveled peripheral surface, a series of resilient rings set in grooves in said beveled peripheral surface and bearing in the trough, a shaft for supporting said disc-like member, a bearing for rotatably supporting said shaft, a housing fixed to said bearing and partially conical in shape, said bearing being pivotally mounted to hold the shaft at an angle such that the rings onthe peripheral edge of the disc-like member will bear on the annular member secured to the lapping disc, and a wiper fixed to said partially conically shaped housing for wiping the face of the lapping disc.
15. A distributing apparatus for distributing cutting compound over the face of a lapping disc, a trough surrounding the lapping disc, and a compound carrying disc positioned to bear in said trough and to extend angularly partially over the working face of the lapping disc to pick up compound from the trough and transfer it to the face of the lapping disc.
16. A distributing apparatus for distributing compound over the working face of a lapping disc comprising a trough surrounding the lapping disc, and a compound carrying disc rotatably positioned to bear in said trough and to extend partially over the working face of the lapping disc for transferring compound from said trough to the working face of the lapping disc.
