Description

(No Model.)
W, L. & B. WIOKERS. Tile Kiln.
No. 229,848. Patented July 13, I880.
Em A 1mm. 1" M! E 35 with numerous perforations or openings I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WIOKERS, LOUIS WIGKERS, AND BARNY WIGKERS, OF LEBANON,
INDIANA.
TIL'E- SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,848, dated July 13, 1880. Application filed May 22, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM WIGKERS, LOUIS WIOKERS, and BARNY WICKERS, of Lebanon, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have in vented certain new and useful Ilnprovementsin Tile-Kilns and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View, and Fig.
I 5 3 is a vertical cross-section.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to kilns for burning brick and tile; andit consists in certain improvemeuts in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the rectangular body of the kiln, at the .4 5 sides of which, near the ends, are constructed firing-arcl1es or furnaces BB, from the inner ends of which flues O O extend nearly to the top or crown of the kiln.
D D are separate arches or furnaces, con- 0 structed at the ends of .the kiln, as shown.
A flue, E, constructed at the bottom of one of the-sides of the kiln and provided with a damper, F, leads to the chimney G.
The top or crown H of the kiln is provided 7 which are capable of being closed tightly by means of suitablyconstructed slides or dampers J ,-or in any suitable manner. 7
The floor or bottom of thekiln is constructed,
in the usual manner, of fire-brick, between the several rows of which openings or chinks are left for the admission of draft from the firingarches.
In operation the openings in the top or crown are at first closed, while we fire up at the corner arches B B, from which the draft is up through flues 0, down through the kiln, and up through the chimney. After burning in this manner the upper half of the tile or brick, (more or less,) we open the perforations I in the crown, close damper F, and fire up at the end arches, from which the draft is direct upward through the kiln. The lower half of the tile are in this manner burned. Finally we close the crown-holes, open the damper F, and fire at all the arches, by which means we are enabled to drythe kiln quickly and thoroughly without danger of cracking the tile, by which a considerable loss is sometimes entailed.
From the foregoingdescription, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood.
Ou'r improved kiln is simple in construction, easily and conveniently manipulated, and exceedingly economical in operation.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to seizure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the rectangular kiln A, having furnaces B, arranged one at each corner, andflues O with the flue E, having damper F, and the chimney G, arranged centrally at one of the long sides of the kiln A, whereby the heat from furnaces B is forced to traverse nearly the whole body of said kiln, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of .two witnesses.
WILLIAM WIOKERS.
LOUIS WIOKERS.
BARNY WIOKERS.
