The invention broadly concerns a mechanical movement, particularly for obtaining locomotion.
It is an object of the invention to provide a mechanical movement whereby an object is caused to progressively7 move on a surface.
A further object is to provide a toy simulating an animal, which is caused to move on a surface and which simultaneously simulates the head and tail motions.
It is a further object to provide a toy horse on which a rider is caused to simulate the motions of horse-back riding.
It is a still further object to provide certain details of construction and arrangement of parts tending to enhance the emcency and utility of a. device of the character described.
With these and many other objects in view, Which will become apparent from a perusal of the invention, the latter comprises the means described in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the claims forming a part thereof, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the invention is incorporated in a toy horse by way of example and not by Way of limitation, it being understood that the invention may be incorporated in any device in which the elements of the invention may be utilized.
As shown, the body portion of the toy horse comprises two vertical walls I0, II connected at the lower end by webs I2 and I3. A gear chamber I4 is provided at the wall II to house the ordinary spring motor, generally designated by I5, which motor is well known to render a description thereof superfluous.
The motor, energized by a key I5, constitutes the driving means for a shaft I1 journaled in the walls I0 and II and provided with a crank I8. A transverse rod I9, parallel to the shaft I1, is journaled at the upper forward end of the walls I0, II, and has secured thereto an inclined rod carrying, at the outer end, a head 2|, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1.
From the rod I9 extends downwardly and rearwardly a rectangular frame 22 in the nature of a 55 slotted link surrounding the crank I8 of the shaft I1 so that upon rotation of the shaft I1 and crank arm I8 the frame 22 is caused to oscillate about the rod i9 as a pivot and simultaneously imparts oscillation to the head 2|, thereby simulating the movement of the head of a horse in motion.
A transverse'rod 23 connects the rear upper ends of the walls I0, Il, and is provided with a rectangular frame 24 encompasisng the crank arm I8. A tail member 25 oscillates about the rod 23 when the shaft I1 and its crank arm I8' oscillate.
The feet of the horse are reproduced by U-frames 26 and 21 whose horizontal portions 28 and 29 are journaled in the side walls I0, II.
The lower ends of said U-frames are secured to a cross member 30 having downwardly depending end flanges 3| in which is journaled a shaft 32 having wheels 33 fast thereto. The wheels have cut away sector portions to provide ratchet teeth 34.
Each flange 3| has a vertical slot 35 in which is loosely arranged a transverse rod 36 which rests under its weight on the wheels 33 and prevents rotation of the wheels in clockwise direction, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 3.
The walls I0, II, at the center, are connected by spaced transverse Webs 38, 39 which' have cut away portions 40, 4I (Fig 2) at the inner edges complementing each other to form a slot to permitloose passage of a vertical plate 42, which forms an integral extension of a figure simulating a horse back rider 43.
The extension 42 is pivotally secured to the crank arm I8 so that, upon rotation of the shaft I1, the figure 43 is vertically reciprocated and, by reason of the guiding slots 48 and 4I, is simultaneously swayed, thus simulating the motions of a horse back rider.
The actuation of the legs 26 is effected by 'a frame 45 connected to the horizontal portion 28 and encompassing the crank I8 of the shaft I1.
Similarly, a frame 46, encompassing the crank arm I8, is connected to the horizontal portion 29 of the leg frame 21,
In use, upon winding the motor I5 by means of the key I6, the shaft I1 is rotated land the crank arm I8 causes actuation of the various frames 22, 24, 45 and 46, which produces the oscillatory motion of the head 2 I, the tail 25 and the legs 26 and 21.
The leg frames, being provided with ratchet wheels, block against rotation in one direction, and will prevent back movement of the legs so that only forward locomotion is obtained upon oscillation of the leg frames.
The crank arm I8 also effects vertical reciprocation of the ligure 43 which simultaneously executes a swayingmotion by reason of the clearance afforded in the slots 40 and 4I of the cross members 38 and 39.
While the drawings show one embodiment of the invention, numerous changes, alterations and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I, therefore, do not limit myself to the details of construction and arrangement of parts, as
shown, by way of example, but claim my invention as broadly as the state of the art permits.
I claim:
1. A toy, including a body portion, a drive shaft in said body portion, legs pivotally secured to said body portion and supported on wheels, means actuated by said drive shaft for imparting oscillation to said legs, means for locking said wheels against rotation in one direction, a figure depicting a rider loosely connected to said body portion, means including an extension passing through an extended slot in said body portion and actuated by said shaft for positively causing said gure to vertically reciprocate and sway, and a head pivotally connected yto said body portion and adapted to be oscillated by said drive shaft.
2. A toy, including a, body portion, a drive shaft in said body portion, legs pivotally secured to said body portion and supported on wheels, means actuated by said drive shaft for imparting oscillation to said legs, gravity actuated means for locking said wheels against rotation in one direction, a gure depicting a rider loosely connected to said body portion, means actuated by said shaft for positively causing said gure to vertically reciprocate and sway, and a. head pivotally secured to said body portion and adapted to be oscillated by said drive shaft.
3. A toy, including a body portion, a crank shaft in said body portion, legs pivotally secured to said body portion and supported on wheels, a lost motion connection between said crank shaft and the pivots of said legs, means for locking said wheels against rotation in one direction, a figure depicting a rider above said body portion having an extension connected to said crank shaft, a guide for said gure permitting its back and forth swaying, and a head pivotally secured to said body portion and connected to said crank shaft for oscillation thereby.
