COMBINED FENCE-POST AND GATE-HINGE.

- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,385, dated June 29, 1880,

Application filed February 24,1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN CUNNINGHAM, of Drifton, (Jeddo I. O.,) in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Fence-Post and Gate-Hinge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which formapart of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective View, Fig. 2 is a side view, Fig. 3 is a crosssection, andliig. 4 is a perspective view, of one of the gate-hinges used in combination with myimproved fencepost.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention consists in the combination, with a fence-post having T-shaped slots, of an adjustable gate-hinge, as will be hereinaf ter more fully shown and described.

The fence-post consists of a flat body having wings or flanges extending in both directions at right angles to said body, so as to form a regular cross, thus: as clearly represented in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The postA o tapers upwardly and downwardly, so as to insure lightness and to enable it to be easily driven into the ground. For the latter purpose the lower end is also sharpened, as shown at B.

The four flanges or sides of the post are provided with T-shaped notches I), as represented in the drawings, to receive the fence-wires,

which are-held securely in said notches by means of suitable keys. Upon thefour sides the said notches are arranged at various distances from each other, so that by turning the various sides to the front the wires of the fence may be differently spaced and a different number of wires used in the fence. Provision may also be made for using boards or rails instead of wire.

'Wherc gates are to be used 1 provide the post with adjustable hinges of the construction shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. These hinges, it will be seen, consist of a butt, 0, having the pint-1e D and a laterally-projecting T-shaped lug or catch, D, fitting in any one of the T-shapcd notches 1) into which it may he slid from the side. Upon one side the catch D is provided with a plate or washer,

E, which prevents it from slipping through the notch. Upon the other side it has a laterally-projecting bolt, F, by means of which the device may be secured upon the fencepost by a nut and washer. These hinges may be readily adjusted in any of the notches in the fence-post. They are simple,'durable, and convenient.

My improved fence-post is simple, cheap, and durable. It is also so light as to be easily transported from place to place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a fencepost constructed substantially as described, and having the T-shaped notches b b, of a hinge-butt, 0, having T-shaped lug or catch D, provided with a plate or washer, E, and bolt F, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
