This invention relates to a copyholder for typing machines and more particularly to a device of the type which is automatically operable to indicate on a copy the point of copying by the typist.
An object of the invention is to provide a copyholder and position indicator which is automatic inits operation to indicate at all times the point of copying by the typist.
Another object is to provide a device of the class described which is simple in construction, is easy to operate and is accurate in its indication of the position of copying.
Still another object is to provide a device which may be readily placed in or removed from operating position.
Another object is to provide a device which is readily adjustable for diierent spacings on a copy.
Still another object is to provide a copy holder having a novel driving device which includes a clutching mechanism which is leasily engageable or releasable by the typist.
A further object is to provide a copy holder which is driven by a ratchet mechanism operated by a moving element on the typing machine when such machine is restored to position to initiate the typing of a new line.
The foregoing are primary objects and will, together with other objects, bemore fully apparent when considered with the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:

In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings the device of the invention is'shown generally, Fig. 3 showing the device as applied to a typewriter I having a key board 2 and a traveling carriage 3.
The copy carrier I5 is recurved at 20 at its opposite edges so that the carrier is slidably longitudinally of the pillars IT. Bearing members 2I may, if desired, be interposed between the recurved edges 2! and the pillars I.
As already explained the desired movement of the copy carrier I5 is effected4 by the cable YI6 which passes beneath a pulley 22 in the base I4 thence over a sheave 23 mounted on the steady plate I3. tached to a lug 2li on the rear side of the copy carrier I5 and adjacent its lower end.
A holding rod 25 is mounted upon the upper end of the copy carrier I5 and is spring pressed toward the carrier so that the friction sleeves 25 bear against the copy and releasably hold such copy in place.
The line which is being copied is indicated by the graduated scales 21 and 28 between which is a slot 29 into which a lug on the pointer II eX- tends for attachment to the cable I2 which passes downwardly within side frame members 33 and beneath small pulleys mounted therein so that the closed cable and pointer assembly may be actuated in the manner already described. The side frame members 30 are attached at their lower ends to a rod 3l which is pivotally mounted upon the base I4 so that the frame may swing toward and from the copy carrier I5. This frame is constantly urged toward the carrier by means of tension springs 32 which are attached to the pillars II and pins 33 attached to the frame above the pivot point. By means of this construction the scales 2I and 28 engage the copy with sufcient force to hold the copyv flat upon the carrier I5 and hence closely contiguous to the characters being copied.
The end of the cable I5 is then at- The control mechanism 35 for controlling the movements of the cable |6 is provided with a cover 36 and is mounted upon a base plate 31 secured to the base |4 at one side of the copyholder just described. As shown in Figs. 4 to 8 inclusive, the cable I6 passes beneath a sheave 38 mounted on the plate 31 and thence passes over a drum or reel 39 mounted upon a composite clutch shaft 48l which is journaled in spaced journaled bearing supports 4| and 42. The clutch shaft 48 is tubular in construction and is made up of parts 43 and 44 which are enlarged at their inner ends at 45 and 46 to form a peripheral groove within which a ratchet wheel 48 is mounted.r The enlargements 45 and 46 are secured together by means of screws 49 whereby the clutch shaft is made an integral unit.
Intermediate the screws 49 the enlargement 45 is provided with radial openings 58 through which pass clutch members 5| which are adapted to move outwardly into engagement with the ratchet wheel 48 and effect driving engagement therewith whereby the clutch shaft may be driven when driving effort is imparted to the ratchet wheel.
The reel 39 is attached to the section 44 of the clutch shaft so that the cable I6 is wound thereon when the clutch shaft is driven in a manner to be more fully described.
The clutch shaft 48 is provided with a knob 55 at its outer end so that the shaft may be driven manually if desired. This knob assembly is provided with a central bore 58 which is enlarged at 51 to receive a coil spring 58 engaging the inner end of a knob 59 attached to the reduced end 68 of a plunger within the bore 6| in the clutch shaft. The plunger is tapered at 62 at its inner end so that the clutch members 5| are moved radially outward when the button 59 and the plunger are forced inwardly within the bore 6I.
It is to be understood that the spring 58 is of sufficient strength that the plunger assembly is normally held outwardly but such spring is incapable of removing the assembly outwardly once such assembly has been forced inwardly to effect engagement of the clutch members 5| with the ratchet wheel 48.
In spaced parallel relation with the clutch shaft 48 is a rock shaft 65 mounted in bearings 66 and 61 attached to the base 31. This rock shaft is normally urged in a counterclockwise direction by means of a spring 68 attached to the base 31 and to a collar 69 attached to the outer end of the shaft. Intermediate the bearings 66 and 61 an arm 18 is attached to the rock shaft and a pawl 1| is pivotally attached to such arm at its outer end. This pawl has its outer end 12 formed to engage the teeth 13 on the: ratchet wheel 48. The pawl is constantly urged downwardly toward engaging position by tension spring 13 attached to a collar 14 on the shaft and a pin 15 on the pawl.
The rocking of the shaft 65 is limited by means of a collar 16 adjacent the bearing 66, this collar having an undercut portion 11 which provides downwardly facing surfaces engageable with the bearing 66.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the rock shaft 65 may rotate through a predetermined angle when the device is in operation. During this rocking movement of the shaft the pawl 1| moves to engage the ratchet wheel 48 and effect the desired rotation of the clutch shaft 48. wheel is, however, determined by a reclining U- shaped space control arm 88, the lower limb of which has a sliding connection with a lug 8| on the base 31. 'Ihe upper limb of the control arm 88 is provided with stepped surfaces 82, 83 and 84 which are engageable by the pin 15. The position of the space control arm is determined manually and is xed'by notches 85 which are engageable with a lug 86 on the base 31.
As best seen in Figs. 1, 9 and l0, a sleeve 81 is attached to the rock shaft 65 in any desired po- At the outer end of this sleeve is provided a transverse opening to receive the arm 98 which is secured in place by means of a set screw 9|. This arm is adapted to be engaged by the carriage 3 of the typewriter I or an equivalent element of any typing machine with which the device is used.
The operation of the device is believed apparent from the foregoing description. By way of summary it will be assumed that the copy carrier l5 is at its lowermost position and it is desired to initiate operation of the device. A copy having been secured in place with the holder 25 and behind the scales 21 and 28, the button 59 is pressed inwardly whereby the ratchet wheel 48 is clutched to the clutch shaft 48. The knob 55 is then manually rotated to bring the copy in desired relation to the scale 21 or the scale 28. A pawl 9| fixed on the base 31 engages one of the teeth on the ratchet wheel and holds the copy carrier in this initial position. The connection between the arm I3 and the cable |2 is then adjusted so that the pointer is desirably positioned relative to the copy.
After a line of the copy has been completed carriage 3 is moved to the right for the Succeeding line. During the travel of the carriage the arm 98 is engaged thereby and is likewise moved to the right whereby the pawl 1| engages the ratchet wheel 48 and rotates the clutch shaft 48 an amount which is predetermined by the setting of the space control arm 80. At the same time the pointer has been returned to the beginning of the new line of the copy and successive lines are copied by repetition of this mode of operation.

In this con- Istruction the rock shaft 65' is mounted in a journal |88 on the base 31 and an arm |8| is carried on the inner end of the shaft 65. This arm .carries a pin |82 at its outer end and the upward limit of movement of this pin is determined by an ear |83 attached to the bearing 42'.
The pin |82 is adapted to engage a projection |84 on van arm |85 which surrounds the clutch shaft 48 intermediate the clutch assembly and the bearing 4|'. This arm pivotally carries pawl 1 which rides upon the teeth 13 on the ratchet wheel 48. The reel 39 is properly oriented upon the base 31 and is driven by the shaft 48' through the beveled gears |86 which are respectively attached to the shaft 48 and a stub shaft |81 which is journaled in a bearing |88 mounted on the base 31.
As already indicated the pawl 1| is in constant engagement with the ratchet wheel 48. In order to limit the rotation imparted to the clutch assembly by the rocking of the rock shaft 65' a stepped control block 88 is slidably attached to the bearing |88 and is provided with stepped surfaces 82 and 83 which are adapted to be engaged by the nether side of the arm |8| and hence limit the downward movement of such arm. The position of the stepped control block 80 is adjustable by means of a lever I IU pivotally mounted upon the bearing 00 and having a pivoted connection with the arm B'.
While we have shown a specific embodiment of the invention in the description of the foregoing specification it is intended that the invention shall not be confined to such specic construction as the invention broadly comprehends a novel copyholder and position indicator which is automatic in its operation and functions to accurately indicate at all times the point of copying by the typist.
What is claimed is:
1. In a typewriter copyholder, a base, spaced pillars extending upwardly therefrom, a copyholder plate extending tangentially at one side of said pillars and recurved at its edges to slidingly f'lt about the pillars, a cable attached to said plate to raise the plate on the pillars, and means attached to said cable and including a lever to be rocked to lift the copyholder plate step-by-step to expose the lines of a copy held on the plate.
2. In a typewriter copyholder, a base, spaced pillars extending upwardly therefrom, a copyholder plate slidingly mounted upon said pillars, a cable attached to said plate to raise the plate on the pillars, a reel mounted upon said base and upon which said cable is wound, and means including a lever operatively connected to said reel and adapted to be rocked to lift the carrier stepby-step to expose the lines of a copy held cn the carrier.
3. In a typewriter copyholder, a base, spaced pillars extending upwardly therefrom, a copyholder plate slidingly mounted upon said pillars, a cable attached to said plate to raise the plate on the pillars, a reel mounted upon said base and upon which said cable is wound, and means including a carriage-engaging lever operatively connected to said reel and adapted to be rocked to lift the carrier step-by-step to expose the lines of a copy held on the carrier, said last mentioned means including a releasable clutch connection between said lever and said reel.
4. In a copyholder for use with land operable by the movable carriage of a typewriter, the combination including a vertically adjustable copy carrier, driving means for said copy carrier, said means including a ratchet wheel operatively connected to the copy carrier, a rock shaft, a pawl attached to said shaft and adapted to engage said wheel, and a lever mounted on said shaft to be engaged by the movable carriage to rock the shaft and lift the copy carrier.
5. In a copyholder for use with and operable by the movable carriage of a typewriter, the combination including a rock shaft, a lever mounted on said rock shaft and engageable by the typewriter carriage to rock the shaft, a pawl drivably connected to the rock shaft, a second shaft, a ratchet wheel on said second shaft and engageable by said pawl, a reel, a clutch connection between said ratchet wheel and reel, a copy carrier vertically movable relative to the typewriter, and a control cable on said reel and attached to the carrier to lift the carrier when said lever is rocked.

In a copyholder for use with and operable by the movable carriage of a typewriter, the combination including a rock shaft, a lever mounted on said rock shaft and engageable by the typewriter carriage to rock the shaft, means on the shaft for limiting the rocking movement thereof, an arm attached to said shaft, a pawl pivoted on said arm, a stepped control arm for adjustably controlling said pawl during initial rocking of the shaft, a second shaft, a ratchet wheel on said second shaft to be engaged and rotated by said pawl, a reel drivably connected to said wheel, a vertically movable copy carrier and a control cable attached to said reel and said carrier.

In a device of the class described, a tubular shaft, driven means operatively connected to said shaft, a ratchet wheel on said shaft, a plunger movable within said shaft, clutch means movable by said plunger for clutching the ratchet Wheel to the shaft, and a pawl reciprocable transversely of the shaft to engage and drive said wheel.

In a device of the class described, a tubular shaft, driven means operatively connected to said shaft, a ratchet wheel on the shaft, there being radial openings in the shaft interiorly of said ratchet wheel, clutch members in said openings, means movable axially of the shaft for moving said members into clutching engagement with the ratchet wheel, and means for driving said Wheel.

In a device of the class described, a shaft, driven means operatively connected thereto, a ratchet wheel releasably mounted on said shaft, a reciprocable pawl mounted to engage and rotate said wheel and shaft, a projection on said pawl, and means engageable by said projection for limiting the movement of the pawl during its engagement with the ratchet Wheel.
10. In a typewriter copyholder, a base, a frame extending upwardly therefrom, said frame including tubular vertically extending side portions, a copyholder plate in engagement with said side portions at one side of said frame and having its edges contoured to slidingly fit upon the side portions,V a cable attached to said plate to raise the plate vertically along the frame, and means attached to said cable to move the cable and plate in a step-by-step manner to expose the lines of a copy held on the plate.
