An arm 40 projects laterally from, the .rod .37 and is provided with a pin 41 adapted to be received within a perforation 42 previously formed ina sheet of paper 43 which is adapted to be moved by a platen 44. The pin 41 is provided with a ball 45. at its lower end which is capable of beingrevolved when sliding over the surface A sleeve 46 is received by a reduced endof the platen 44 so that the outer surface of the sleeve is flush with the outer surface of the platen. This sleeve is held stationary against rotation while the, platen 44 is rotated. This sleeve is provided with a perforation 47 which receives the pin ,41 when the perforation and cut-out portion 42 align with the perforation 47, thereby maintaining the sheet of paper against movement.

The arm 24 isslidably mounted in the sleeve 23 and this sleeve is pivotally connected to the arm 21, as shown at 50, sothat the arm 24 may not only be reciprocated but may be rocked by the spring 29 for moving the pawl 26 into engagement with the teeth of the'gear 16.
The outer end of the arm 24 is sheared oil at an angle, as shown at ,51, and is adapted to engage a cam member 52 on the bracket 28 so that when the sheared-oil portion 51 engages {the cam 52 -it will elevate the arm 24 and move the pawl 26 out of engagement with the teeth 16.
A gear 55 is secured to a shaft 56 and this shaft is connected at one end with a clutch member 57 while the other end of the shaft has a manipulating knob 131: secured thereto for'manually rotating the shaft and the platen 44.
A second clutch member 59 is secured to a shaft 12 and this shaft is connected to the platen 44. A spring 61 maintains the clutch members 57 and 59 in operative relation but will permit slidinghnovementof the clutch members for a purpose which will be presently explained.
The sleeve 46 is provided with a,lug 62 which is hinged at 63 on the sleeve so that the lug may maintain its vertical position in one direction of movement ofthe platen 44 but which may be moved on its pivot when the platen is shifted in the opposite direction.

The position of the platen when the paper is punched is shown in dotted lines in Figure 7.
The operation of the. device shown in Figs. 1 to 9, inclusive, is as follows: The sheet of paper is placed in the bookkeepingmachine, as shown in Fig. 2, with the lower end of the sheet being inserted. The lever 21 is then moved to the right, as shown in Fig. 2, and as indicated by the arrow,
and this movement will cause a slight depression of the spring 25 and movement of the arm 24 in the same direction. The arm 30, however, moves in the opposite direction and the pivoted lugs 31 engage a crank 32, causing said crank to'be rocked whereby the crank 35 will engage the enlargemeat 36 on the rod 37 and shift it to the right, causing'the pins 41 to be moved away from the paper 43 and out of the perforations 42 inthe paper and the perforation or opening 47 in the sleeve 46 if the pin has been received by the aligned perforations. It will be appreciated, however, that when the paper is inserted in a downward manner, that the pins 41 have not been received by a perforation due to the fact that these perforations are always located adjacent the last line on which an item has been placed by the typewriting machine. when the sheared off portion 51 of the arm 24 has moved away from the cam 52, the spring 29 will pull the arm 24 toward the gear 16 so that the pawl 26 will engage the teeth of the gear so that further movement of the arm 2 will cause rotation of the gear and likewise the platen 44, due to the meshing of the gears 16 and 55. At this time, the pawl 31 has moved away from ithe crank 32 thereby releasing the rod 37 and permitting the spring .48 to shift the arm to the left in Fig/a2 so that the pin 41 will I again come in contact with the sheet 43.
If the perforation 42 in the sheet 43 has not registered with the passage or perforation 47 in the 'sleeve 46, it willagain benecessary to rock the lever to the right in Fig. 2 as previously until the perforations are alined and the pin will slip into said perforations and retain the cylinder and sheet against further movement. If however, the perforations are alined and the pin has been received by said alined perforation during the movement of the lever 21 and the rotation of the gears 16 and 55 the paper will not be torn due to the fact that the clutch members 57 and 59 which are frictionally engaged are permitted to slip on each other and thus prevent further rotation of the platen 44. a
Each time the arm-21 is released the spring 27 will return the arm to its normal inoperative position so that the arm 24 will ride over the cam 52 and have its pawl 26released from the gear 16. In Figs. 2 to 10, inclusive, it will be seen that the paper is inserted from the front portion of the platen 44 while in the construction shown in the remaining figures it is adapted to be inserted from the rear of the platen.
When the lever ,13 is oscillated as previously described, the inner free end will bear against the lower portion of the barrel [8 and since this barrel is tilted at an angle inwardly' towards the slot '16 of the lever '13, said lever will be rocked at a greater angle, causing the pawl 9 to become disengaged from-the teeth of the toothed wheel 98 which is secured to the platen 44, thereby permitting the platen to be rotated in the usual manner.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 9, inelusive, it will be seen/that the end of the platen which is enclosed ed with a groove 100 and upon'opposite sides of this groove are secured to the platen toothed wheels 101 which are adapted to be engaged by lugs 102 shown more particularly in Figs. 8 and 9 formed integrally with the pin 41 sothat when the lugs 102 engage the teeth of these wheels the platen will be held against rotation and the clutch,
members 5': will permit the platen to be held stationary while the gear 16 is rotated through'the lever 21. This element, like the pawl 96 inFigs. 11 to 17, inclusive, retains the platen against rotation and thus prevents tearing the paper after the pins have engaged the respective cutout portions in the paper.

1. In a bookkeeping machine, a device for predetermining the position of a sheet of paper in the machine and comprising'rneans for punch-. ing a perforation in the paper at a point in said paper where a line of typing 'is to be applied, means adapted to be received bythe perforation with slots 16a in within the'sleeve 46 is providfor retaining the sheet of paper in position for;
the addition of a new line of typing, means for progressively moving the paper I chine, a platen adapted to frictionally engage and move the paper through the machine, meanssfor through the ma- 5 progressively rotating the platen, means operatively connecting the platen moving means with the perforation receiving means for causing said means to be released from the perforation before the platen is rotated, the last-mentioned means including a gear and a lever carrying a pawl, said pawl adapted to engage the teeth of the gear after the lever hasbeen movedthrough a predetermined angle, said lever being directly connected with the perforation-receiving means, and means for actuating the punching means.

In a bookkeeping machine, a device for pre-'- determining the position of a sheet of paper in the machine and comprising means for punching a perforation in the paper at a point in said paper where a line of typing is to be applied, means adapted to be received by the perforation for retaining the sheet of paper in position for the addition of a new line-of typing, a platen adapted to frictionally engage and move the paper through. the machine, a fixed sleeve receiving one end of the platen and provided with an opening adapted for alinement with the perforation in the paper, a spring pressed pin adapted to drop into the opening when the perforation in the paper has. been alined with said opening, means for releasing the pin from the opening and including means for revolving the platen after the pin has been released, the last-mentioned means including a geartand a lever carry: ing a pawl, said pawl adapted to engage the teeth of the gear after the lever has been moved through a predetermined angle, said lever being directly connected with the pin releasing means,
" and means for actuating the punching means.
3. In a bookkeeping machine, a device for pre-, determining the position of a sheet of paper in the machine and comprising means for punchins a perforation in the paper at a point in said paper where a line of typing is to be applied, means adapted to be receivedby the perforation for retaining the sheet of paper in position for the addition of a new line of typing, a platen for moving the paper through the machine, means for holding the paper and platen against movementwhen a line of typing is being applied to the paper, means for removing the holding means out of operative relation with the platen and paper when the platen is to' be revolved, means co-operatively connected with the lastmentioned means for causing rotation .of the platen after the holding means has been released, t'he last-mentioned means including a gear and a lever carrying a pawl, said, pawl adapted toengage the teeth of the gear after the lever has been moved to a predetermined angle, said lever being directly connected with the means for removing the holding means for the paper, and means for actuating the punchmg means. In a. bookkeeping machine, a device for predetermining the position of a sheet of paper in the machine and comprising means for punching a perforation in the paper at a point in the paper where 'a line of typin is to be applied, a platen adapted to be revolved for moving the paper through the machine, apin adapted to be received by the perforation, cooperating means on the pin and platen for holding the platen against rotation, meansjor moving the pin and the platen and including means for rotating the platen after the pin has been released, said last-mentioned means including .a gear and a lever carrying a pawl, said pawl adapted to engage the teeth of the gear after the lever has been moved to a predetermined angle, said lever being directly connected with the moving means for the pin, and means for actuating the punching means.

Ina bookkeeping machine, a device for predetermlning the position of a sheet of paper in the machine and comprising means for punching a perforation in the paper at a point in the paper where a line of typing is to beapplied, a platen adapted to be revolved for moving the paper through the machine, a pin adapted to be received by the perforation, cooperating means on the pin and platen for holding the platen against rotation, means for moving the pin out of en-, gagement with the perforation and for causing release of the platen and including a lever, means actuated by the lever after the pin has been removed for causing rotation of the platen, the last-mentioned means including a gear, a rod carrying a pawl and directly connected with the lever, said pawl adapted to engage the teeth of the gear after the lever has been movedthrough a predetermined angle, said lever being directly connected with the means for moving the pin out of engagement with the perforation, and means for actuating the punching-means.

In a bookkeeping machine, a device for predetermining the position of a sheet of paper in the machine and comprising means for punching a perforation in the paper at a point in the paper where a line of typing is to be applied,- a platen a pawl carried bythe lever and adapted to engage the teeth of a gear for,causing rotation of the gear after the lever (has, been moved through a predetermined angle for causing release of the pin, and means for actuating the punching means. 7 k

In a bookkeeping machine, a device for predetermining the position of a sheet of ,paper in the machine and comprising means for punching a perforation in the paper at apoint in the paper where a line of typing is to be applied, a platen adapted to be revolved for moving the paper through the machine, a pin adapted to be received by the perforation, cooperative means on the pin and platen for holding the platen against rotation, means for releasing thepin from the perforation in the paper, means for actuating the releasing means and including a lever, intermeshing gears for causing rotation of the platen, a pawl carried by the lever and adapted toengage the teeth of a gear for-causing rotation of the gear after the lever has been moved through a predetermined angle for'causing release of the pin, means for actuating the punching means, and means for retaining the pawl in an inoperative position while the lever has been moved through the predetermined angle.
8. In a bookkeeping machine, a device for the paper through the machine, a pin adapted to be received by the perforation, cooperating means on the pin and 'alaten for holding the platen against rotation, means for releasing the pin and for moving the platen and including means for rotating the platen after the pin has been released, means for causing the pin to be released tion.
