Description
Patented Aug. 11, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHOE SLIP, COVER Daniel Platkin, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application July 18, 1941, Serial No. 402,919 7 Claims. (01. sis- 72) This invention relates to footwear and particularly to an auxiliary device for protecting and ornamenting shoes, slippers, and the like. It is adaptable to mens, womens, and childrens shoes, but has particular utility in connection with womens shoes because of the more delicate type of material and coloring ordinarily found therein.
It is an object of my invention to provide a shoe slip cover adapted to be readily and detachably placed on a shoe of any style for the purpose of protecting the toe of the shoe or the toe portion thereof against scratches, spots, stains, and dirt or abnormal wear encountered for example in driving an automobile, engaging in housework, or factory work, or in walking or sports.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a device of the character described which is reversible, that is to say, finished on both sides, so that it may be turned inside out when soiled on one side or for the purpose of color contrast, if the two sides are made in different colors.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent from a further consideration of the description and the drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe with my shoe slip cover in place thereon.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through my shoe slip cover.
Figure 3 is a horizontal cross-section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
A shoe I I! is illustrated upon which, as seen in Figure 1, my shoe slip cover II is mounted. The shoe chosen for example is a flat sole type, but this is wholly immaterial to my invention, as my shoe slip cover may be used on all kinds and styles of shoes. It may have certain ornamental characteristics which harmonize from an artistic standpoint better with certain styles than with others but this has nothing to do with utility.
My shoe slip cover comprises a covering member I2, a sole member I3, and an elastic hold-on strap I4.
The covering member comprises two layers of material I5 and I6 with their rear edges I1, and their forward edges I8 in the case of an open toe design, turned in and stitched together to contribute a finished edge. The toe may be open as illustrated or may be entirely closed, the essential thing being the formation of a pocket in which the toe portion of the shoe I will fit. The layers of material I and I6 may be made of fabric, leather, rubber, or rubberized material,
it being desirable though not necessary that the color or pattern be ornamental. The outside of one layer may be of one color or pattern, and the outside of the other layer may be of a similar color or pattern or contrasting. The two layers may be of different material if desired.
The covering member I2 is secured to the sole member I3 along the edges of the latter preferably by stitching. A type of chain stitch may be employed which will give the appearance of a finished joint on either surface of the'sole member I3. This sole member is preferably made of a semi-flexible leather, although a choice of other materials may be made.
The elastic strap I4 is secured to the covering member I 2 by having its ends I9 inserted between the layers I5 and I6 and being stitched therethrough. By the term elastic strap I intend as my preferred example to suggest any suitable elastic material; but within the scope of my invention I may employ a leather, fabric, or some other type of strap either with or without elastic qualities, and may button or snap one or both ends of such strap to the covering I2, or I may employ a zipper or buckle fastener. In the case of a reversible shoe slip cover of the character described however, it is preferable in order to make a smooth joint between the strap and the covering member to stitch it in the manner illustrated. The strap I4 may be of one color or one color on one side and another color on the other, or may be in a pattern. A desirable arrangement is to have the strap match the covering member on the corresponding sides thereof.
The manner of using my shoe slip cover is as follows: The covering member is pulled onto the toe portion of the shoe, and the strap I4 is brought around the heel of the shoe, andthe friction of the strap I4 will retain the device in place. Scufi'ing or scratching of the shoe which often occurs in driving an automobile for in-' stance, is thus avoided. In housework or in factory work, liquids or dirt which otherwise might stain, discolor or soil the shoe are caught on the shoe slip cover and the shoe is thus protected. Numerous other instances of uses where my shoe slip cover may be advantageously employed will occur to the user.
When the exposed side of my shoe slip cover has become soiled or stained or discolored, or if for example it is desired to change colors, or patterns, to harmonize or contrast with different shoes, the shoe slip cover may be turned inside out and replaced upon the same shoe or any other shoe.
The material used in the covering member may be washable.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A reversible shoe slip cover comprising: a covering member of sheet material decoratively finished on both sides and a flexible sole member secured together with a flush joint to form a protective pocket adapted to fit over the toe portion of a shoe, and a strap secured to said pocket and adapted to embrace the heel portion of saidshoe to retain the said protective pocket on said shoe.
2. A reversible shoe slip cover comprising: a. covering member comprising two layers of decoratively finished sheet material and a flexible sole member secured together with a flush joint to form a protective pocket adapted to fit over the toe portion of a shoe, and a strap secured to said pocket and adapted to embrace the heel portion of said shoe to retain the said protective pocket on said shoe.
3. A reversible shoe slip cover comprising: a covering member comprising two layers of decoratively finished sheet material having the exposed edge or edges thereof secured together and a flexible sole member secured together with a flush joint to form a protective pocket adapted to fit over the toe portion of a shoe, and a strap secured to said pocket and adapted to embrace the heel portion of said shoe to retain the said protective pocket on said shoe.
4. A reversible shoe slip cover comprising: a covering member comprising two layers of decoratively finished sheet material having the exposed edge or edges thereof secured together and a flexible sole member secured together with a flush joint to form a protective pocket adapted to fit over the toe potion of a shoe, and a strap secured to said pocket by inserting the ends between the said layers adjacent the rear edges thereof and adapted to embrace the heel portion of said shoe to retain the said protective pocket on said shoe.
5. A reversible shoe slip cover comprising: a covering member of sheet material decoratively finished on both sides and a relatively flexible sole member secured together by means of a chain stitch forming .a flush joint to form a protective pocket adapted to fit over the toe portion of a shoe, and a strap decoratively finished on both sides secured to said pocket by means of a chain stitch forming a flush joint and adapted to embrace the heel portion of said shoe to retain said protective pocket on said shoe.
6. A reversible shoe slip cover comprising: a covering member comprising two layers of decoratively finished sheet material and a relatively flexible sole member secured together by means of a chain stitch forming a flush joint to form a protective pocket adapted to fit over a toe portion of a shoe, and a strap decoratively finished on both sides secured to said pocket by means of a chain stitch forming a. flush joint and' adapted to embrace the heel portion of said shoe to retain the said protective pocket on said shoe.
7. A reversible shoe slip cover comprising: a covering member comprising two layers of decoratively finished sheet material having the exposed edge or edges thereof secured together and a flexible sole member secured to said covering member by means of a chain stitch forming a flush joint to form a protective pocket adapted to fit over the toe portion of a shoe, and a strap decoratively finished on both sides secured to said pocket by inserting the ends between the said layers adjacent the rear edges thereof and 1 adapted to embrace the heel portion of saidshoe to retain the said protective pocket on said shoe.
