Description

J. H. PRALL. Transom Lifter.
No. 229,179.- Patented June 2 2,1-880.
WITNESSES:
NJET'ERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHXNGON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUS'IUS H. R. PRALL, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,179, dated June 22, 1880.
- Application filed October 11, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JUsTUs H. R. PRALL, of Elmira, in the county of Chem ung and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Adjusting and Fastening Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a front elevation of a transomsash to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation. Figs.
3, 4, 5, and 6 are detailed views of parts of the device. I
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for adjusting and fastening transom-sashes, green-house sashes, and other window'sashes, so constructed that the sashes may be opened and closed easily, however heavy they may be, and held securely in any desired position.
A represents a door-frame; B, the door, and O the sash of the transom or fan-light above the door. The transom-sash C is hinged at its lower edge to the bar D, between it and the door 13. To the end of the sash 0, near its lower corner, is attached an arm, K, to the outer end of which is swiveled the end of a bent rod, E. The upper end of the bent rod E is hinged to a lug upon a nut, F. The screwthread of the nut-F fits upon the screw-thread out upon the upper part of the rod G. The upper part of the screw-rod G is surrounded by a tubular case, H, which is made of such a size as to inclose the nut F, and has a longitudinal slot formed in it, through which the lug of the nut F passes. The upper end of the screw-rod G revolves in a socket, I, attached to the upper part of the side post of the door-frame A. The
lower end of the screw-rod G enters a case, J, attached to the post of the door-frame A, and has a small beveled gear-wheel, L, attached to it. The teeth of the gear-wheel L mesh into the teeth of a larger beveled gear-wheel, M, pivoted to the case J. The journal of the gearwheel M projects through the case, and to it is attached a small crank, N, so that by oper ating the crank N the screw-rod G is turned, which raises and lowers the nut F, and thus closes and opens the sash 0. With this device the sash G will be securely locked in any position into which it may be adjusted.
The screw-rod G, for convenience in adjusting, packing, and transporting the device, is made in two parts, the joint being a little above the case J. The adjacent ends of the two parts of the screw-rod G are halved to each other, and the joint is inclosed in a sliding tube or ferrule, O, as shown in Fig. 6, so as to make the connection rigid.
The device has been described as applied to transom-sashes, but it is equally applicable to green-house sashes and other windows.
Havin g thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the hinged sash hav ing arm K, of the nut F, the bent rod E, swiveled to the arm and pivot-ed to the nut, the screw-rod Gr, having bevel-pinion L, the cases H J, the socket I, and the crank-shaft having bevel-gear wheel M, as shown and described.
J. R. J OSLYN, W. LANDY.
