STEAM AND HOT-WATER BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,173, dated June 22, 1880. Application filed September 24, 1 879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. PARKS, of Palmer, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Steam and Hot-Water Boiler, of which the following is a specification.
The object of myinvention is to construct a boiler which shall heat water and make steam rapidly with a small amount of fuel, and at the same time be durable.
The construction will be more particularly explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, and the invention pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a boiler constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection on line 00 w of Fig. 1.

A is the water box or tank forming the front of the boiler. This is preferably made in the form of a flat-sided oblong box, of sufficient capacity for holding the required amount of Water, according to the purposes the boiler is used for, and with sufficient steam-space above the water.
At the back of the tank A the tubes to are connected. These are arranged in lines, each tube a being opposite the space between the two tubes above or below, and are connected together in pairs at their outer ends by returnbend couplings b, the tubes in one line being connected to the tubes next below, so that each pair contains an upper and lower tube.
The tubes a pass intermediately of their length through the vertical plate 0, and near their outer end through the plate d. These plates 0 d sustain and stay the tubes laterally and vertically.
The boiler will be set in afurnace, as shown,
0 being the grate, f the front wall, 9 the escapeflue, and h the bridge-wall. The tankAis supported by the frontwall, f, the plate G rests upon and forms a continuation of the bridgewall h, and the plate d rests on the back wall, so that the products of combustion are compelled to pass through between tubes at, over the top of plate 0, and down between the tubes at, in front of plate d, to the flue g. In passin between the tubes the current is broken up and divided bythe tubes and the heat particles caused to come in intimate contact with the tubes. The plate d protects the elbow-join ts b from the direct heat of the furnace.
Both plates 0 and d may extend to the bottom of the furnace instead of being supported by brick, and the whole apparatus may be made in portable form.
The water-tank A should extend sufficiently far above the upper tubes to give space for steam and at the same time keep the tubes covered with water. The water will circulate rapidly in each pair of tubes, so that it will become rapidly heated.
The boiler is to be furnished with the usual appliances, such as gage-cocks, a safety-valve, &c.
