Description
0. SPENCER. STEAM GENERATOR,
No. 77,670. Patented May 5, 1868;
UNITED STATES PATENT ZIMPROVEMENT in sraAm-eenzuh'roas.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 77,670, dated May 5, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
.Beit kuownthat one SPENCER, of Jaelrsonburg, in Butler county, in the State of Ohio,-
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare'that .the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the. letters of reference marked thereon.
v Figure 1 represents atop view of my imprc'vement in boilers with the casing or upper portion of the furnace ,broken away. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional viewiof the boilers and furnace inclosing them.
In the accompanying drawings, A A A in-- die-ate the boilers, which are connected together by tubes B B above the water-line and by the tubesCl 0 below the water-line.
D is an induction-pipe for the admission of feed-water, and'b is the eduction stenmqiipe.
The boilers may be made ot. any size, and
any desired-number may be connected in the manner representedin the drawings,
The furnace E may be made of brick-work or iron; but the construction will be such as to insure the complete envelopment of the boil- '1 rs and theirconnecting-tubes in the flames and caloric generated bythe burning fuel. The furnace is constructed of greater width than the length of the boilers, and suitable ledges or supports, d, are formed along the inner sides of the furnace, upon which the ends of the series of boilers rest. I p
The'fuel is introduced through doors a a at the end of the furnace, and the arrows t' i indicate the direction of the draft.
H H H are doors in the side of the furnace for the purpose of giving access to the man-holes in the' ends of the boilers, and the doors I I I are .foreleaning out the ashes.
The dotted line K. denotes'the undulating surface of the bottom of the furnace.
Mis a damper to regulate the draft. Therear end, 0, of the furnace will be con nected with achimney in the usual manner.
My construction and arrangement of boilers for generating steam have the advantages of economy in the ns'eof fuel and greatly cheapening the manufacture of boilers connected by induction and eductiontubes.
Heretofore the boilers arranged transversely over the fire-chamber have been connected by along tube or pipe outside of the furnace and communicating' with each boilor by. a short eonnecting'tnbeextending through the top of the furnace, and the water-pipe through which the boilers are fed was connected at the ends of the boilers in the. same manner. I dispense with these two =long pipes outside of the furnace and connect the boilers by the short tubes wit-bin the furnace. This new arrangement will diminish the quantity of fuelrequired, as
the steam-tubcs'and water-tubes are subjected to the same degree of heat as the boilers, and I consequently condensation of steam in exposed pipes is avoided.
One of the advantages of the short tubes arranged to connect the boilers is that it insures an'equal supply of water at all times'in the several boilers.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and; desire to secure by Letters Patent,'
rsf The combination and. arrangement of the boilers and tubes with the furnace 1* whereby the entire surface of the boilers A and tubes B G is subjected to the action of the heat, substantially as andfo'r the purpose specified.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of October, A. D. 1867.
. ODEI) SPENCER. Witnesses:
