Description
. v A. F. JENNINGS. Device for Storing Water for Irrigating Purposes No. 229,136. Patented June 22,1880.
' Jinn? I i// F UNITED STATES AUGUSTUS F. JENNINGS,
PATENT OFFIcE.
OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,136, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed January 28, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS F. JENNINGS, of the city of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Storing Water for irrigating Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of a device designed particularly for use upon the sea-shore in collecting and storing water within a proper reservoir to be used for the purposes of irrigation and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the gate and combination therewith of a suitable reservoir, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, partially in section. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the gate.
' In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a breakwater built upon the sea-shore, and in which is formed the water-way A, between the abutments A and opening into a reservoir, B.
0 represents a gate, provided at its lower end with journals J, having their hearings in between the lower edge of the gate and the bottom of the water-way A.
Each end of the gate is provided with slides D, pivotally supported to the inner face of the gate by radius-bars D, as shown, and are of sufficient weight that by their own gravity they are compelled to rest against the face of the abutments for the purpose of making tight joints, and they are held in position by the guideplates E.
Within the reservoir, the bottom of which is below the level of the sea, is erected and properly stepped a screw-rod, F, in a vertical position, and is strongly braced. Upon the top of this rod is secured a hand-wheel, G, by means of which said rod may be rotated.
H is a nut-collar threaded upon the rod F,
and is provided with suitable ears or lugs a upon one side, to which is pivoted one end of the brace-rods J, while their opposite ends are pivoted to the rear face of the gate 0, near the upper edge thereof.
The bottom of the water-way should be built below the water-level, and the gate should be adjusted so that the wash of the sea on the beach or each wave would wash over the top of the gate and be deposited within the reservoir, the gate being raised or lowered as the condition of the sea may require, the gate retaining the Water in the reservoir at a height above the sea-level.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. In an apparatus for collecting and storing sea-water on the sea-shore, the combination of the reservoir B, having its bottom below the sea-level, breakwater A, having abutments A and water-way A, having its bottom below the sea-level, with the gate 0, inclined from the sea and pivotally secured at its extreme lower end to the abutments, with a water-tight joint at its lower edge, and having suitable adjusting devices to vary its inclination, whereby the height of the gate may be adjusted to the different heights of the sea-waves breaking against it and washing over its top intothe reservoir, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a proper reservoir,
B, breakwater A, and race or water way A,
the gate 0, pivotally secured within said waterway, and provided with the brace-rods J, nutcollar H, and screw-rod F, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In combination with a reservior, B, breakwater A, and race or Water Way A, the gate 0, brace-rods J, nut-collar H, screw-rod F, and slides D, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
AUGUSTUS F. JENNINGS.
Witnesses CHAS. J. HUNT, H. S. SPRAGUE.
